The crappiness of the samples in General MIDI(which is probably what you're talking about) is absolutely ridiculous, so no.

MIDI in general encompasses all synthesized music though, including most video game music before this generation, so by that definition you'd be right.

I was referring to General MIDI music in games, such as was seen in many PC games in the late eighties and early nineties.

I love the MIDI sounds in old PC/DOS games, especially those that use the OPL3 soundchip. Though, MIDIs played on a more modern PC to me generally sound pretty bad imo.

Yeah, you have to listen to them with that chip. Luckily you can usually find recordings using Sound Blaster 16/Pro

Nobody said anything about 8-bit. I think you don't know what the word "chiptune" means.

Please, define it for me then.

afaik it's music created with sound chips from old 8-bit consoles

It's music created with sound chips from anything that synthesizes sound rather than playing back premade ones.

Today, most/all chiptunes are made through emulated sound chips and not physical ones though.

Basically it's music that you forge from scratch inside a computer. MIDI, meanwhile, uses samples made to sound like/recorded from real instruments.

In other words, making songs like the one I posted is a remarkable feat, much more technically difficult than stringing together a bunch of MIDI notes.

Ok

I'm not an expert on that stuff and since you clearly are, it looks like I may have used the wrong word in the topic title

Good, someone covered this before I had to.

MIDI as a standard is great, though outdated in some unfortunate ways. But general MIDI samples are goddamn awful.

actually all of the samples in that song are 8 bit, the video has a link to the .it file, you can check it yourself

most video game music has either been synthesized internally(chiptunes) or uses it's own format for playing notes and samples(more like a tracker module than a MIDI), and streaming audio really started to take over way before this generation

also GMIDI is terrible*, wtf is this topic

*depends on your soundcard/banks but that's a drawback of general MIDI itself, the composer can't tell what it will actually sound like for most people
