There seems to be a quite a few that were critically appraised like 999, Ghost Trick, the Layton series, the Phoenix Wright series, ect. And since I have a few long bus rides ahead of me, I definitely want a new video game to enjoy instead of replaying the same ol' same ol'. For anyone who has a played these types of games for the DS, what would you personally recommend?

Professor Layton is by far the best in terms of puzzles and storyline. I'd even go as far to say it was one of the best new franchises from this generation

Have only played 999, but it was pretty fantastic. Not the best in the puzzle department, to be sure, but the story more than made up for it.

Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick, 999, and Hotel Dusk are the usual recommendations and what I would consider the best on the system.

Layton's good but it's a lot less adventurey than the others.

Hotel Dusk and its sequel Lost Window. Sequel was only released in Europe and Japan but you can still get it in English so it's not that big of a deal.

Layton games aren't as adventurey as the rest, the meat of them is in logic puzzles so if you don't really like those avoid them.

Hotel Dusk is really cool but it can be really hard to figure out what to do next at certain points.

The first Layton game is awesome.

Phoenix Wright > Layton > 999 >> Ghost Trick > Hotel Dusk. All of them are good, although the first three are a tier above the last two, IMO. You can't go wrong with Phoenix Wright, btw (the first three games anyway).

I can personally recommend Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton, and Hotel Dusk, but I don't really recommend any of them as adventure games. The adventure game elements are all pretty weak.

Professor Layton is all about its puzzles. Lots of great thinking puzzles here. I recommend all of them, in any order.

Phoenix Wright has some pretty damn good murder mysteries and it has some of the best characters and story of any game I've ever played. Play them, in order.

Hotel Dusk is the closest to being more of a functional adventure game but it's also pretty story and character oriented, and it has great art direction as well. Some of the game parts of it are frustrating though.

Thanks a lot! I might start with Layton because I saw two of the games in Walmart and none of the others. Now the question is Last Specter or Unwound Future?

Haven't played Last Specter yet, but I would suggest maybe starting with that one? Unwound Future is the 3rd game in the first trilogy, while Last Specter is a prequel. While playing the first two games isn't absolutely necessary to understand the plot, you could miss quite a bit if you're not familiar with some of the recurring characters.
