After keenly observing that there were 64 tracks on the Chrono Trigger OST, which is of course the magic number, it seemed only appropriate to do a tournament of the songs from the game. Typical tournament rules. Everything should be rather self-explanatory. Matches last 24 hours or until I am available to tend to them, whichever is greater.
Past results: A. Battle With Magus wins less convincingly than expected against Ruined World, 11-4. B. Kingdom Trial defeats A Strange Happening 9-6. C. Black Dream blows away the higher-seeded Battle 2, 12-2. D. Peaceful Days easily puts away Magus Castle, 12-3.

Actually prefer the Lavos variation (The Day the World Revived) over the original here. As such, the 8/9 is a close match, given the opponent is a variation on Guardia Millennial Fair.

The most melancholy track in the game and one of my favorites indeed. I always get wistful when I listen to this one. "Fanfare 3" is a quick burst of Chrono Trigger in a nutshell if ever there were one, but there's clearly no comparison.
Lavos' Theme
Well, if there were ever a track that made me remotely nostalgic for those stupid balloon games in Xenogears, I think "First Festival of Stars" would be it, because Mitsuda's Xenogears track for that absurdity surely wasn't it. So I guess there's that?
But "Lavos' Theme" mops the floor with it anyway.
Remains of the Factory
Speaking of Xenogears -- which I will often do given that Mitsuda handled that game's soundtrack -- "Crono and Marle" sure does bring Citan talking about music to my brain. It's a good little piece, it really is! "Remains of the Factory" is such a cool track though and it just screams "SNES chip at its finest". Once again, so groovy in all the right, Trigger-tastic ways. My head, it bobs up and down of its own volition.
Last Battle - Battle Against Lavos Core
Boy, "Determination" really should have held the Skinny Puppy. It was a good dish before then.
Meanwhile, "Last Battle" does suffer a bit from a similar illness but rises far, far above it. I love that reverb.
1. Schala's Theme - I'm not as big on this song as most, but it's opponent is just round 1 fodder. 9. First Festival of Stars - Tough match. 4. Crono and Marle ~ Far Off Promise - I usually like those calm songs a lot, so this gets my vote 5. Last Battle ~ Battle Against Lavos Core - As I said previously, I LOVE Crono's theme, so by all means I should love Determination as well. However, the sound effects are really annoying, so I'm giving this one to Last Battle.

First Festival of Stars gives me warm fuzzies, but 8. Lavos' Theme is just so suspenseful and awesome... the simple chromatic melody is effective, and I just like the slow moving chords in the second section.... it's hard to analyze those (it's far from traditional music theory), as most of them are missing the 3rd.... huh, some of them seem to be stacked 4ths, or maybe you could just call them 9ths... I dunno.... Regardless, the major 2nd intervals are what really make those chords. The cool counterpoint between the melody and the bass also adds to that little section. See, I can also analyze music if I want to!!!
4. Crono and Marle ~ Far Off Promise.... not nearly as good as Xenogears' music box theme, but I still like it.
5. Last Battle ~ Battle Against Lavos Core.... I refuse to vote for a excerpt of Chrono Trigger with a few sound effects added.

I'm not sure actually, I honestly don't pay attention to those sorts of details too often. I'm sure he'll explain to ya when he sees the question though.
I did the seeding myself. The whole thing was completely unprepared. As I said in the OP, I literally just went "oh, there's 64 tracks. Let's make a bracket out of them!"
So I did.
In other words, if the seeding is bad, blame me. If it's good, thank me. If it's somewhere in the middle, be ambivalent towards me. Or blame and thank me at the same time. Your choice.
On the bright side, tomorrow's matches will conclude round 1, and then we can get to some face-offs that are actually meaningful.
Incidentally, as matches last "24 hours or until I can tend to them," and I don't plan on being awake in 2 hours, these matches will probably conclude when I wake up tomorrow morning for work.
