Demon's Souls is great! Though with the servers going down, you miss a "big" part of the game, sorta, it's hard to explain. Offline, certain aspects are easier because the black/white world tendency won't f*** up every time. B/W tendency is erm basically, at a certain level, certain quests open up depending on the world you are in, which can lead to unique areas of the game, unique NPC's and unique items and armor.

With online, your tendency resets a lot, which is why I said it won't mess up if you are offline. However, with online, you can help certain players with boss fights and other areas of the game, you can invade people. steal their souls(experience), you won't be able to see hints left behind by other players, whether they are helpful or hurtful. Those hints, and messages are a big part of the game imo.

Dark Souls is essentially the same thing, but the B/W tendency is gone, doesn't exist at all in Dark.

Both of my favorite games of all-time, and easily my favorite new series of this generation. I would look up videos to find if it is indeed your thing though. Combat is super engrossing, but definitely has a steep learning curve. The games in general both have pretty steep learning curves.

You literally get to choose Steiner's last name in FFIX.

Also, just about every character in FFXIII refers to their full name at some point.

And Ashe gets a middle name in FFXII (an extremely hideous one that would be better off not even existing, but nevertheless!)

Yeah, FFIX was borderline OK about it. Garnet and Steiner are obviously in on it. The two second-continent party members having last names which were literally one letter apart from one-another has always bugged me to no end though so I'm just fine with Amarant calling himself a flamer instead of bringing that to light.

went through a map checking off all blast shard locations like 3 times before I decided to just start a new game and mark off each shard I find as I play

Uncharted 1-3 - Incredibly charming and well made. 1 is the lowest on the priority in most areas (still charming enough to be enjoyable), 2 is one of the best games ever, and 3's great but has worse pacing than 2 at the expense of slightly improved gameplay.

Yakuza 3-4 - Games with big stories and beat-em-up fighting engines. Gameplay-wise, think something like a modern River City Ransom. Usually compared to Shenmue, but it's a lot more focused and has a way more competent fighting system that's used more often too.

Infamous 1-2 - Sandbox superhero game, main character's powers are based on electricity. Uses them for mainly third person stuff, but has a lot for moving around and all that too. This is another instance where 2's a huge improvement on 1 in every area, yet 1 was pretty decent.

Valkyria Chronicles - A weird mix that comes out as third person tactical RPG. Takes place in a WWII-esque setting, your characters are a squad in a country's militia army. Each individual character's got their own unique things and classes like an SRPG, you choose which ones you want to take, and each turn you select which unit you want to move to let them move in real time. Introduces new types of obstacles and enemy types almost every fight, eventually ramping up to be more ridiculous situations than later Advance Wars fights.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - If you're into the series, you pretty much need to get it. Good game, a lot of content to it, and capped the series off really well.

Dark Souls - Demon's Souls can be a bit polarizing, but Dark Souls uses more or less the exact same gameplay and style with more polish to it. This was my personal GOTY 2011, Huge world absolutely filled with content, great art direction, gameplay's really tight, and so on.

Oh come on it's not that bad.

You can see them on your minimap, so you just have to check the outskirts and run down and all the alleys pressing R3

Bioshock/2 - Amazing atmosphere and story, and pretty good gameplay. Totally immersive. Second one has much better gameplay, but the rest is just okay.

Uncharted 1+2. Don't let people trick you, Uncharted 1 is fantastic. You probably won't enjoy it as much as 2, but it has fantastic pacing and some truly challenging fights. And when you get to Uncharted 2, we can rock online.

Speaking of online, with MGS4 closing its online, will it now be impossible to get a platinum in that game? I haven't played it but that would be sad.

Because it seems I'm under scrutiny now, you will be happy to know that I looked up the ESRB information on Demon's Souls and after watching a video I feel comfortable purchasing that as well :P
