incredible (and i mean incredible) action, sharp and funny dialogue, perfectly paced, the entire cast had chemistry and everyone had their awesome moments, and that entire final act had me gushing like a fangirl having multiple fangasms
and I'm not that big an Avengers fan!
certainly there were stuff that could be better like Scarlett Johansson's bland portrayal of Black Widow, Tony Stark having the only real character arc, and Thor being relegated to a mere powerhouse while not really giving off that godly aura
and it lacked... gravitas
still, Whedon pulled off a fantastic job directing and writing the movie that could have very well fallen apart trying to balance all those elements
it's an amazing jaw-dropping spectacle and one of the best superhero and action movies
better than all of the Marvel movies except for Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man
Batman Begins is also better and The Dark Knight is still king
those four movies had that gravitas the Avengers lacks
i can answer biscuit's question but i wanna know if some people might see that as SPOILERS so i can mark it appropriately (fanboys can be weird at times)
Totally agree with TVR. Even though it seems like a missed oppurtunity, when all the epicness is there on the screen, and you're sitting there witnessing all the epicness unfolding on screen, it will slip your mind. I know it slipped mine.

I have to say I disagree. For me the writing was a little disappointing with a lot of sub-par lame jokes and over-the-top action lines. It's a bit of a family movie (which is not a problem in itself, but I like my superhero movies a bit darker and more mature). I think you touched upon this with your mentioning the lack of "gravitas" but to me it was a bit of a problem.
The action scenes were great though, and I did like the movie overall. It's just I think something like X-men First Class, to give a recent example, was a lot better.

it depends on how you like Whedonspeak which this film certainly had and which i certainly enjoyed
X-Men: First Class had the same problem of sacrificing character development for the supporting cast in favor of their two leads (which were the only real high marks of the movie!) but it was more glaring because of how strong McAvoy and Fassbender were in their roles and the lack of ANY memorable moments from the entire "first class!"
Cap, Hulk, and Thor also had the luxury of having their own movies to be fleshed out character-wise so the people who watched their solo movies already cares about them by this movie
while McAvoy and Fassbender did bring the emotional weight to their roles, everything else about First Class was lightweight especially the SFX, the production value, and action scenes compared to the Avengers which was just a marvel to behold!
certainly there were stuff that could be better like Scarlett Johansson's bland portrayal of Black Widow, Tony Stark having the only real character arc, and Thor being relegated to a mere powerhouse while not really giving off that godly aura
wow, i didn't expect them to nail the comics perfectly there.
