Eh, don't let this discourage you. I admit I was kind of irritated last night when Genny purposefully saved two low tier things that should be eliminated almost immediately to get rid of an actual good moment because I figured since this was such a unique concept for a contest and I assume most people voting in this thing actually like FFX, we should try to do it a bit of justice and take it at least semi-seriously when it comes to getting rid of bad stuff and saving good stuff.

But hey, it's just a contest, so yeah.

Well I sort of meant that I'm just going to vote a few times and be done. That moment should not be out at all. The battle is the least memorable but Seymour's entire revelation is far too important to be out before crap entries.

While I love the entire game, I feel that if I oversaturate the topic with my votes the stuff I initially vote for might get eliminated and I really don't want that, especially at this point in the game.

Macalania is one of the worst if you're trying to get the treasure because you have to do the whole thing twice, which is annoying.

I'd predict a top 5 of yunalesca, saying goodbye, yuna's speech, Seymour Flux, and a wildcard of sorts like Blitzball

But there's a great handful of moments I'd be happy with making it in the top 5.

Chocobo racing...

Few things in the Final Fantasy series entries I generally enjoy ever anger me. Even if they irked me a bit while I was younger, I have usually gotten over that reaction by now. But not this one.

The sound of those birds is forever etched in my brain. It is the Contra code of legendary gaming for me, but not in a good way. I want those birds to die. Forever. Please. So much hate.

I'll write more tomorrow. It's pretty pathetic I know, but I'm that tired!

Cactuar Hunting is eliminated, huh? My thoughts: I actually kind of like this one, although it's much more bearable if you have a No Encounters armor equipped so you don't have to worry about that and you can focus on just the cactuar hunting. Some of the cactuar stuff is humorous at times, too. It's nothing special though.

I know this isn't me writing on all the eliminated moments yet but I will say this about Cactuar Hunting right off the bat -- my first time through I didn't have No Encounters and it was hell.

There are some funny moments (the one on the airship is priceless) but without No Encounters... no, just no.

59th place - Cactuar hunting

Well I've already discussed this above, but like I said I'm glad to see this one go fairly early. I don't really dread it like I used to, in fact I rather enjoy it now, but the sting of being foolish and not knowing No Encounters existed yet when the game first came out and I ran in there... man, between this one and the chocobo racing FFX really has a way with bad minigames. (Which it makes up for with blitzball.)

60th place – Cloister of Trials

I'm not too bothered by this. I like the trials for their gameplay variety, something FFX is pretty good about, but although lore-wise they make sense and are neat for the sake of shaking things up a little bit I always going into them dreading them a tad. It's not that they're hard but they can be annoying. I do like seeing the glow of the spheres in Tidus' palm though, something I enjoyed especially so ten years ago of course. The graphics in this game are just good and I can't wait to see them glow again in HD.

There's also the momentary elation of watching the grooves in the flooring light up in line segments which connect various areas, the thrill of a Destruction Sphere blowing something up to reveal a chest and the sense of accomplishment when you finish with some of the latter ones. So I guess really they aren't so bad. Maybe a bit too soon, yeah.

Ranking time:

Zanarkand > Djose > Macalania > Bevelle > Kilika > Besaid.

61st place – Battle with Seymour Natus

It is my understanding GenesisSaga didn't intend to knock this one out of the park so quickly and I'm glad to know that. Kimahri is great here, as is Seymour's response; the tension in the atmosphere is palpable and the fight itself is pretty good. All four Seymour fights are fun in their own way, but there is something of a hierarchy involved, and this one really ought to be higher than dead last.

62nd place – Tidus finally believes Sin is Jecht

Cool moment. Sad to see it go so early but there are plenty of better ones. There's a great moment where Tidus speaks with the sort of wisdom people often forget he sometimes shows (due admittedly in large part to the game kinda flip-flopping around a little bit with it) where he is... er, oh, I just read Leon's post and he said what I was going to say. Well uh, yeah, that. It's neat. I just love the imagery here. An attention to cinematic language many JRPGs don't have the budgets to provide.

63rd place – Chocobo racing

Good god am I glad to see this one out. Nightmare fuel. Just... nightmare fuel. I realize I mentioned this one already too, but it deserves to be repeated in a more 'official' manner. Those birds' wailing makes me want to start wars, and I'm generally regarded as a fairly laid-back guy around here so hopefully this impresses upon you how much I loathe this minigame. It is the first and foremost reason I hesitate to replay this wonderful game at times.

Lightning Dodging is tedious as all get out, but you can get it out of the way fairly quickly if you're prepared. No Encounters armor, there's a spot in the Thunder Plains that does three lightning strikes every five seconds, mute the TV so you don't have the chance to confuse thunder with some other noise, such as the background music. Every 25-50 dodges, pause the game and rest your eyes for about 30 seconds because if you're like me, you're straining them trying to dodge the lightning because you don't want to get struck by lightning in the middle of a blink.

Bam, if you do it right, it's done in 10-15 minutes. That being said, it's still tedious as can be and completely devoid of fun. I'm just saying it's not the worst Celestial Weapon quest.

58th place: Lightning dodging

Leon already pointed out the relatively well-known fact (at this point): it can be gotten through with far, far less aggravation if you know what you're doing. I don't really see it as cheating or anything; it's hardly an exploit IMO. I mean when the game throws something this ridiculous at you it stands to reason that looking around for optimal areas to pull it off should be in short order. The fact that I never found the now-famous location just makes me disappointed in myself, but FFX's Celestial Weapon minigames in general have that rare effect of pissing me off quite a bit, so I'm sure I gave up on searching.

It's still pretty bad. But it's third in a line of terrible. Chocobo racing is quite a bit worse and butterfly catching is a couple of notches worse. Really, whoever designed this Triple Triad of awful should have been given some harsh punishment for it.

And even if you're one of those people who feels he has to do everything "naturally" (and if you are, more power to you. Enjoy the "satisfaction" of all that extra time wasted making things more irritating than they need to be!), then butterfly catching is STILL worse because there's no way I'm touching that piece of crap without those maps that have the exact routes to take outlined for me.

Only painful part of getting the three I actually wanted was the chocobo racing which was actually kinda entertaining the first few dozen tries <_< Dunno why so many people are completionist about FFX.

I use every character in every battle so they all get AP. I do often like to take Kimahri down Rikku's path so I can get those abilities, but then he becomes physically weak and ultimately not that useful in battle once Rikku joins because now you just have two Rikkus. I'll usually send him down Wakka's path so he can have status effects and stuff.

But Kimahri has some understatedly cool moments in the game that I like.

Choosing Gatta's Fate was just eliminated. My thoughts: It's kinda neat to have a part of the game where one character will die depending on the decision you make, even if both characters are minor. I personally prefer sending Gatta off to his death because it's kind of chilling when Tidus finds his body on the battlefield and tries to touch him, but then his body falls over. Plus, I like Luzzu's reaction at Djose Temple better than Gatta's.

But still, a pretty small moment in the grand scheme of things.

But butterfly catching, even with a map was the worst. Would have been a lot better with no encounters.

Man, I preferred Luzzu a ton more than Gatta, but telling Gatta to go to the front lines when there was very little way to justify his doing so (imo), especially after hearing Auron tell him "hey you need to do the tasks you are assigned before you can move up in the world." This means I usually told Gatta to stay put, though the urge is always there to send him. Seeing Luzzu go ape**** on a wall is always entertaining, too, and of course a little saddening, and he's just overall better.

I don't exactly like butterfly catching, but with the maps, it's possible to be done with butterflies really fast: talking less than 5 minutes here.

Of course, I usually end up having a hard time so it takes closer to an hour, but at least it gets the monster catching for Macalania Woods out of the way as well.

Same reason I don't use No Encounters when Cactuar hunting in Bikanel.

Choosing Gatta's Fate

I just headcanon that whole pre-Operation conversation into something else and I'm perfectly fine with that. I mean, I headcanon'd FFX-2 into never happening. I'm no stranger to the wide open possibilities of such personal choices.

Not only is the Djose scene better with Gatta's death but I feel like seeing that brief, brief glimpse of Luzzu looking up when Sin is destroyed in the ending works more for me on an emotional level as well. Here's a man who lost the kid he'd taken in and sent off to his death. He was pretty devastated. Even with FFX's aging facial animations I always feel something stir up in me seeing him get to look to the sky with such relief. It's over and Gatta did not die in vain.

Operation Mi'ihen

I know I'm the one who toasted it and I'm sorry for that -- I really do like this string of scenes quite a bit. I always equate the closing-off of this portion of the game as the end of the first arc for whatever reason. There are three or four arcs and this is it for the first one. I'd have to replay the game again to tell you why I reach this conclusion but yeah, it definitely does feel fairly climactic.

I love how FFX's development team had the sort of now-rarely-seen insight into storytelling to build this huge mission up and then have it be such a resounding failure. The tension is palpable as they prepare and Wakka's anti-machina sermon is memorable, as is his stuff on Seymour. Really, Wakka in general is pretty good here.

The FMV is spectacular. The battle is great. Everything about this reminds me why FFX holds a special place in my heart.

I'd split the game's story up like so:

Prologue: Tidus begins his story -> Beginning of pilgrimage
First arc: Pilgrimage begins -> End of Op. Mi'ihen Aftermath
Second arc: Journey continues -> Party escapes the Guado after confronting Seymour
Third arc: Party searches for Yuna -> Party flees Bevelle
Fourth arc: Tidus/Yuna in the lake, journey resumes -> Conclusion of events in Zanarkand
Finale: Battle with Sin, conclusion

Anyway, I think Op. Mi'ihen is one of the game's highest points. I like how it's first introduced as a far off vague event, and gradually is built up (the odd reference, some people in Luca worrying about it during the Blitzball match), before becoming the main topic of discussion when you run into the guards at MRR and Seymour backs the Crusaders. The environment (abruptly) changes from the lush greenery of the highroad to the harsh rocky terrain of the rockroad, and so does the backing track, from pleasant to pensieve. Suddenly the tension is palpable, and it only increases during the trek up to the command centre, with Luzzu and Wakka confronting each other outside the gates, and the party becoming uneasy as they walk past the cannons.

It's built up as a huge event, and it doesn't disappoint. The action FMVs are still impressive today, Sinspawn Gui is the toughest foe the party's faced up till that point, but the recruits are slaughtered, leading to the tragic aftermath sequences (what a beautiful track 'Wandering' is). The second fight with Gui also lets us see first hand how much stronger Seymour is than the party, and his interactions with Yuna start the build up to the next big event.

There is nothing in FFXIII that comes close to Op. Mi'ihen, and it's not even close to being the most memorable event in FFX.

Yeah, Operation Mi'ihen is great stuff, and it's a shame to see it go out so soon.

Yeah, Operation Mi'ihen is a great moment. I think this was really the moment that got me convinced I was in for something special with FFX. The game had been pretty good so far, but nothing really monumental had happened yet (I mean, yeah, you have Sin attacking Zanarkand at the beginning and seeing Sin ravage Kilika, which give you an idea of what you're facing, but those weren't built up like this one was and they were over with fairly quickly). It's your first real hint that everything in Spira is not quite as it appears to be, with the Maesters showing their support for this clearly "blasphemous" operation (and Auron seeing right through it, realizing that the Crusaders inevitably being slaughtered would only strengthen support for Yevon).

There's just a great sense of tension and unease throughout the scene (Yuna's line, "I kinda...think we don't belong here" sums it up quite well) as we wait for the operation to be carried out proper. Then we see Sin just completely and effortlessly wipe out all the Crusaders despite their best efforts in a wonderfully done FMV. Then we get the game's first really tough boss fight with Sinspawn Gui, which is really well done, a solid fight.

Shame to see it go out so soon, but FFX has so many great moments that it's hard to avoid knocking out a great moment early here and there.
