From: Natwaf_akidna | #048 Well, FF 4 has specialized characters and... uhh, the story I guess, while FF 5 was all about the job system.
Oh yeah, and I actually really dig FFIV/IX's (and kinda-sorta FFI's) specialized classes. I know it sounds boring but I just do. It gives the characters such... definition.
Many of them come and go, and they all leave an impression on the player, and in the end when you assemble your final team of five you feel as if this was the true A-Team, that these were the five that can save the world. Each of them lost much, and some everything, but they each display their own unique flavor of courageousness that most final fantasy characters lack. Not a single character seemed to be there "just because".
...FFIV felt more like a Saturday morning cartoon, given how cliche and badly written it was. I can understand the historical argument (it was influential, etc.), but the plot and character development are terrible today!

The problem with 7 was most of, if not all the character arcs resolve before the final disc of the game and just STOP getting development at that point as a result. Vincent and Yuffie's stuff are entirely optional and even then Yuffie pretty much only hangs around because "WELL THE WORLD ENDING WILL BLOW UP ALL THE MATERIA AND I LIKE MATERIA".

You are forgetting when the game was made. The reason it's so cliche now is because it BECAME the cliche.

Oh SuperNiceDog's doing it again dude. SuperNiceDog, you ain't no pimp dude
FF4's plot didn't do anything that was new. Maybe the moon having an atmosphere.
It was cliche and simple, but at least it knew it and acknowledged it, so it just rolled with it instead of trying in vain to make sense of it, only to make it even more nonsensical and sometimes outright pretentious. Like some of the other games have done.
Goddamn I hate FF7's extended crap.

I like FFIV's class system over V's job system. Beyond that, FFIV DS's revamped battle system beats any version of V. The stories are about the same--simple and charming--so neither is really ahead of the other there.

It's horrendous. But hey, that's the nice thing about 'headcanon', something I've done with blocking out the rest of the VII universe. You just give something the finger and walk away forever.
From: ZFS | #069 I take it you haven't played FFIV DS.
I played it and I don't recall the Augment system wildly transforming the game to some colossal extent that its gameplay was suddenly better than FFV's, at least.
Plus the implementation was kinda troublesome. It was like a box of chocolates with what you gave people and what you got in return -- except only a few choice chocolates were especially desirable.

I haven't actually; I was just commenting on what the original FFIV "class system" boils down to. But hey, if FFIVDS is some kind of significant upgrade, then maybe I should play it! I was just always turned off by the lolVA, which I don't believe can be turned off.

I was talking to Westbrick. FFIV DS a much more difficult game than FFV, to the point that saying 'you press A to win' is more likely to apply the other way around. FFIV DS's rebalanced battle system is one of the best in the series.

Forgive me, I wasn't really clear (I'm tired) but I meant to imply I was intentionally interjecting, just voicing my two cents.

I think it can indeed be turned off. I'm pretty sure I did.
From: ZFS | #075 You're fine! I liked the Augment system, myself. It wasn't the best addition or anything, but giving Cecil Kick is amazing.
XD I think I did that as well.
I'm actually more partial to the GBA/PSP additions though overall, I must admit. Augment was cool and I had fun with it but the two super-bosses required NG+ and, well, personally I just don't tend to go near NG+ stuff unless there's a huge draw to it since I get burnt out of most games for a while after beating them once and then when I get around to playing again I want the fresh experience with no bonuses.
GBA's slowdown in North America was definitely problematic but I liked the party swap at endgame, the Lunar Trials were relatively inoffensive additions and the Lunar Ruins (or whatever they were called) were sorta neat.
From: Shoenin_Kakashi | #076 Honestly I felt FF4 DS was easier than plain ol Vanilla FF4
How?
Vanilla is so easy, seriously.
IVDS expects you to use the Augments semi-wisely, where vanilla had no complexities for difficulty to even come from. You equip the latest gear, you fought your battles to be at a decent level. That's it.
But they don't tell you putting Augments on the temp characters is the only way to get the good s***. So people like me who know who's not gonna stick around put all the Augments on the Final Five only.
couldve sworn the booklet said giving augments to your peoples would give you good stuff in return.
Doesn't matter that much aside like 2 people that give something crazy good, since you get the most borked one pretty early and its not missable at all.

The Internet Made Me Hate This Game So I Really Don't Know Tier
FF7
Yeah, I really like the FF series. There hasn't been a game yet that I haven't enjoyed playing. I'm still waiting for a better version of 1 and 2 to come out (I don't own a PSP but I love the graphics in that version) and I still haven't opened 3 for DS because I know it's going to be bad.
Frankly I don't even remember what the plot of some of these games was. Like if you were to ask me about what happened in FF9 I have no idea man. Something about the planet. It's always about the planet. Or something
So imo FFT because of ninjas and ****. And FFXII because of katanas.

Everything below the line is a 0/10 game, with Dissidia being the worst game ever made.
I can live with FFT > FF7, but FF13 > FF8?
