Man I'm not being hyperbolic at all, but you act like I won't defend my favorite game. FFT PSP is an abomination. The only thing worse would be putting FFT 1.3 on it.

If you want to have a serious discussion about the merits of either option, be my guest.

But when you open with "Anyone who prefers the PSP translation of FFT is someone I know I never need to take seriously on any subject" then you are intentionally exaggerating the point for effect.

So yeah, hyperbole.

There's quite a few reasons why someone might prefer to the PSP retranslation and quite a few reasons why someone might not like the original translation. I'll argue why I prefer one and why I think one is weaker, but simply ignoring the merits of either one is being pretty close-minded.

You have every right to defend your position. But you can do better than "everyone who disagrees with me is wrong by default."

sometimes I think the original translator just did not care about his job that much

"but... more evil... well... Lucavi made them to land in this world"

you read what you just did and you're like "yeah man that sounds good, time to translate the next line"

Is liking the original FFT translation akin to liking Legend of Dragoon? Something that you'll only like if you experienced it at a young age?

Same as we told pjbasis: Go play it IMO. And I recommend using the link OmarsComin posted while going through it. I've only covered the introduction and yet that's enough to make me interested already because the FAQ writer used interesting examples of adaptation and cited Vagrant Story.

You know, FFVII may be my favorite game but boy did the translation screw me up the first time through.

Like, the whole Sephiroth clones thing. I thought they literally cloned Sephiroth and there was 100's of them running around. Also, I thought the original Cloud died in Nibelheim and that the Cloud you were playing as during the game was an actual clone.

Not really. I first played FFT in 2k8 IIRC, and I'm not that young for it to count as 'young age'.

was 7 and Tactics handled by the same person or group of people? I've always been curious about that. they're both translated kind of poorly.

I remember playing Tactics not long after it came out, but not getting very far.

Then I played it many years later and got all the way to part where you can get Cloud in your party.

Then I accidentally deleted my file.

Finally, I bought a PSP and the first game I bought was WotL.

The 90s were an era when game translation wasn't quite that good yet. The only "good" translators were Ted Woosley and Dan Owsen. 7 and Tactics came out right around the time Woosley left Square

No, see, I believed even AFTER the Lifestream Memory Flashback that you were still a clone. The first time I played FFVII, I never got the scene where Cloud and Zack escape the underground facility. So I finished up my first playthrough thinking the original Cloud was always dead and this was just a Sephiroth clone that looked like Cloud.

To clear it up: when Cloud slumped over after tossing Sephiroth over the railing, I thought he was dead. I thought that was the end of original Cloud.

This is just me not liking the style of FFT's redone script.

I can't say I ever thought that. There was some confusion about what the clones were and Sephiroth in Northern Cave, but you can see the meaning after you've been through it once or twice.

Like I said, it was the first playthrough.

Honestly, I thought it was pretty neat at the time. The main character isn't the same main character that everyone knew.

FFVII's translation can be a bit wishy-washy at points, but you can glean the truth about Cloud and the Sephiroth Clones from what's there. Sure, the game maybe could have used a bit more exposition on the subject, but your misunderstanding isn't really the fault of the translation itself.

Keep in mind I was 10 when I played this game.

I was told this Cloud I was playing as was a clone.
I saw Cloud apparently die in the flashback.

Excuse my 10 year old brain for jumping to "Clone Cloud is a clone cause the original Cloud died."

lol no. It's because of him that recent Dragon Quest translations have been bad.

I just wish they would have picked a word OTHER than clone.

Oh, I'll play it someday. My backlog is rather long and I always finish games I play, so it takes time to get through it. To my defence, I've beaten every numbered FF, including sequels and remakes regardless of crappiness, so I wouldn't say I'm starved for Square Enix goodness.

I won't read whatever link you're talking about though because I always play games blind. No guides, no spoilers, I don't even watch trailers.

There were just too many flat-out incorrect, utterly indecipherable lines in the original FFT translation for Smith's rendition to be truly worse.

actually the FAQ was saying that the issue with the original translation is mostly that it's too accurate, and is just a straight translation and not a localization. so they just dragged the wordings and idioms straight over from Japan to our language, which is why it reads awkward as hell and sometimes unintentionally hilarious.

I think he mentions a few times where the script is just butchered beyond recognition but mostly it sounds like they at least translated it correctly.
