so, in terms of jrpgs, I've played almost every tales game that has come out in america and loved all of them (even symphonia 2). same with ys
I've played and loved star ocean 1&2 (and own the rest, but have put them off)
let's see... what else... oh yeah chrono trigger was pretty good but I didn't finish it at the very end for some reason... and secret of mana was fun.
I've played a bit of eternal sonata and that was fun... and the first parasite eve...
oh yeah! can't believe I forgot the kingdom hearts series!
but that's pretty much it unless I'm forgetting something (and I probably am, but whatever)
anyways, what should I play? I would prefer ps2 generation and newer, honestly, because I pretty much know what is supposed to be good from before that (although, actually, I don't know much about ps1...)
if you know of any that are multiplayer please mention them (even if they are terrible (but mention if they are terrible))!
also, I tend to prefer action jrpgs (as should be obvious from my list), or at least jrpgs with a bit of an action element, but I would not be opposed to turn based.
I place a large emphasis on character interaction.
It's multiplayer, has high replay value (For obvious reasons), It's easily obtainable in English, and it's not too long. Action RPG. (Sequel to SoM that you've already played.)
Also Seiken Densetsu 3 (which is either the game after Secret of Mana or before) is for SNES and I think it's 3-way multiplayer and basically you choose 3 of 6 characters and the story is almost completely different depending on who you choose, so that's pretty cool. It's basically the game that Tales games try to be.
TWEWY on DS if you have one. This one is an action RPG, although unorthodox.
Earthbound is a classic, so is the sequel, Mother 3, although you will need to get a translation patch for that one.
Other than that, well Final Fantasy is a no-brainer. The GBA remakes are great places to start with those. Avoid FFIVDS like the plague.
But really if you want some hardcore turn-based action then there is no good reason to not get into Shin Megami Tensei, man. Best JRPG series IMHO. Persona 3 FES and P4 on PS2 are both decent entry points. As is Devil Survivor (an SRPG) on DS (or Overclocked on 3DS). Then ease your way into the main series with Nocturne and/or Digital Devil Saga on PS2 and/or Strange Journey on 3DS. Plus there's also the weird action-RPG spinoff Devil Summoner and its sequel on PS2 but those are harder to find.
All of those SMT I listed are excellent except for Devil Summoner, which is merely "above average."
what exactly are the persona games "about"? and what is their battle style?
also, I don't really need suggestions from before the ps1 generation, as I already am aware of what most people consider good from before then for the most part.
Shining Force III pretty much fits the bill perfectly.
It's a strategy RPG for the Saturn. But the second and third part were only released in Japan so you'll need to put the game/translation patch on a cd yourself and do the "swap trick" to play it.
First, you'll need to open up your Saturn and tape down (or remove, depending on which Saturn you have) the sensor that indicates the disc cover is open.
Then you take the burned disc and put it in, leave the lid open and turn the power on. When the lens starts to move, immediately remove the disc (while it's still spinning) and quickly put in any normal Saturn game (I use Road Rash but that's up to you). Let the lens start reading that game.
The lens will move all the way to the outside of the disc and then the access light will start blinking. Once it has blinked twice, immediately take that disc out and put the burned one back in.
It should load the game normally now and you are free to enjoy the best game of all time.
You're welcome.

Oh since you have a Genesis, see if you can get a copy of Pier Solar and the Great Architects. It's a homebrew RPG that came out in late 2010. I've been playing it lately, and it's pretty fun.

Persona 3 and 4 are about groups of high schoolers who fight monsters called Shadows that show up in weird dungeons. You control the main character, and you make friends with classmates in order to power up your Personas, which is what the students use to fight. It's kind of a monster collecting thing in that you can switch the main character's out for others. So it's 50% high-school/dating sim, 50% dungeon crawler. It's better than it sounds.
I take it you weren't really feeling FFVII? That'll make further suggestions of mine a bit challenging as games with bleaker atmospheres like VII are kinda my thing.
You might still love FFX though. It's got a pretty dramatic plot but more vibrancy in its world. It's melancholy.

gotspork, there is still plenty worth playing regarding FFX, mark my words. It's just a lovely game through and through -- and there are more revelations than that, anyway.
foolm0ron posted... If you've never played FFX and don't know any spoilers or anything... you should probably check it out. Really good ending to that game.
Eh, if you don't know the details behind those spoilers, they don't really mean that much. It honestly took me like 3-4 playthroughs for me to even wrap my head around #2.

Laughing scene really isn't the end of the world like people make it out to be... and this is coming from someone who's had difficulty getting into series like Tales because those corny anime-style scenes foolmo just mentioned are often a deterrent for me. (I can get over them in older games because without the cinematic style and voice acting it's easier to just... I don't know, read in a stoic voice or something, haha.)
There is one scene in FFX that I think could have been done about a hundred times better but it isn't that one.
gotspork posted... ffx will most likely hit psn sometime, right?
Hmm...
Well it's a PS2 game and they're being really slow about that last I checked. Plus they're making an FFX HD so that'll probably take tremendous priority. (It will be available for the PS3 as well as the Vita.)
From: foolm0ron | #042 Also laughing scene is very well done and powerful yet subtle, especially for a JRPG where the tendency is to have corny anime style scenes.
How is the laughing scene not corny.
You can say it's a good scene but it's still corny as hell.
I dunno. I can see how someone would think it was corny, but to me, corny has to have an unnatural/fake aspect, and I think the scene definitely felt genuine.
