since they released so many versions of the ds, there are still people who think the 3ds is just an upgraded version of the ds.

I've already seen someone refering to the wii u as the "wii 1.5", and it isn't even close to out yet.

they either need to name it wii 2 or, better yet, something else entirely without "wii" in the title, or confused consumers are going to think it is just an upgrade.

Great point. You'd think they would have learned from their mistake by now, but maybe they feel that the "Wii" brand is too strong to abandon completely.

so many moms and kids try to buy 3DS games for their DS Lites at my store

I instinctively ask "Do you have a 3DS?" when someone brings a 3DS game to the counter now

while I agree that those would be the main problem demographics, I think you may be overestimating us hardcore gamers as well.

not to mention that fact that casual gamers are the core demographic of every system, so you don't want to confuse them.

I think having the "Nintendo" part of the name is sufficient. The other two companies make lots of other crap, so it's important not to confuse your game systems with, I dunno, Excel or a CD player or something.

Once E3 rolls around, there won't be any confusion that the WiiU is the successor to the Wii. It's a bit different from the DS and 3DS situation, because Nintendo released multiple versions of the DS, but they haven't done that with the Wii.

Spot-on. And frankly, I feel that simply calling it the "Wii 2" would be a much better, less confusing title.

They don't need to. Mainstream news outlets will report the news for them. E3 is just when Nintendo will make the system public with real information and games.

Not really. Nintendo's own marketing will make it apparent it's a successor. It's like being confused that the PS3 isn't just a different PS2. They do need to change the name, but dropping the Wii part is largely unnecessary. People realized that the Super NES wasn't an NES!

I want to believe this, but this is a world where the iPad3 will soon exist. When I think of how the public perceives hardware upgrades I think of Apple and how their numbering system shows a progression, but an i__ is still an i___ regardless of the number, for the most part.

But a PS2 is not a PS3, a 3DS is not a DS, and a WiiU will not be a Wii. I think the very fact that the 3DS caused confusion means Nintendo should choose a more striking name for it.

This is even disregarding the fact that "Wii U" as a name is even more dumb than the original "Wii" name.

and like I said, "wii 2" would probably be fine (as lame as that sounds), but "wii u" is going to confuse casuals and parents no matter how much marketing.

Marketing is the most important thing. Nintendo had a habit of releasing new DS models almost yearly, which conditioned people to believe a new DS would just be a continuation of the existing system. The 3DS just came off as a DS with 3D, like the XLvwas a DS with a bigger screen. If Nintendo showed people playing Wii Sports Resort 2 with Wii remotes, the confusion would be understandable, I think. WiiU will have HD, with a tablet controller, and games that looked substantially better than the Wii. The visual upgrade is the important part, because it's easy to show that it's an upgrade, not just a redesign.

Nintendo's presentation last year was a mess, which is one reason they have been silent on the system for so long. This year's E3 will essentially be the unveiling of the console, and their presentation has probably been carefully thought out to avoid the same confusion.

3ds's biggest problem is that it looks exactly like a DS. change up the design and improve the marketing (show off the tablet controller) and it'll be fine. the name sucks but I don't think people will confuse the two unless they're a marketing failure.
