This violates the Space Treaty, you know.

You can't claim private property in space, celestial objects are common heritage of mankind.

Actually, Weyland-Yutani came to mind first and foremost.

I might as well stick with Cloud Nine for a while though. Wake me up when it's time to bomb some Mako Reactors.

well, realistically it's them trying to figure out what they're made of and how it can be useful to us.

alternatively they're looking for the symbiote trapped in one of these things.

Details on how this will be done are being kept quiet

Hur.

Also, how exactly do they plan on getting a mining robot to AND FROM one of these asteroids?

1. Do people seriously not watch the news anymore? I know Diane Sawyer is awful, and can't go a week without reporting what some nobody posted on twitter as "news," but that shouldn't stop you from watching evening news. Cuz you know... old.

2. lol resources. Moar liek worthless space rocks that lesser millionaires will pay their smaller fortunes for just for the sake of owning a space rock.

3. Seriously, good luck getting into space. No, really. We need to hitch rides with russians, now.

4. Not the first time billionaires announced stupid crap like this. It's just getting attention this time because Google people are involved. Cuz you know, nobody can ever shut up about those zany google guys.

I strongly recommend reading a book called The High Frontier. It talks pretty throughly about the advantages of mining asteroids. Calling them "worthless space rocks" is silly. Asteroids are so full of metal that there is more metal in 1 km of an asteroid than in an entire country.

Getting to the asteroid belt and back isn't that hard. It takes more fuel to get from earth to the moon than it does to get from the moon to the asteroid belt and back. The big advantage of mining in space is that you can manufacture in space without having to ship materials from the earth to space. And manufacturing in space is an alround good idea. You can manufacture things in a 0g environment that you can't on earth. Like better computer chips.

As for shipping, that's easy. You don't need the transport to land on the earth, you just gotta do cargo drops, which is easy.

Eh, it's not that bad. It's mostly empty actually. You have a minute chance of even seeing an asteroid, much less colliding with one.

Contrary to science fiction, asteroid belts are less densely populated than the Sahara desert.

Navigating wouldn't be an issue. Being on them, however, is. Just look at any surface image of asteroids, meteoroids, etc. They get their asses kicked by space more than the dark side of our own moon. Yeah, it's empty out there, but not empty enough when you're sitting on the only thing with significant gravity out there.
