There are a bajillion of them across a ton of systems, and I am unsure how many have been fan translated...I know at least some have been though.

Which ones are super awesome? Which ones should be avoided like the plague? How well do the games stack up to other turn based games like Front Mission or Disgaea?

Unfortunately, only two SRW games have been officially released in English, and they are Original Generations 1 and 2 for the GBA. Both are very good games and do a good job of introducing you to the general mechanics and culture of the SRW universe. Many of the units in these games also make apperances in other games. A PS2 version of these two games was released in Japan but didn't make it to America, which is very unfortunate.

There are a couple fan translations of SRW GBA games. One of them is SRW J. I haven't played it so I can't tell you how good it is.

I just love watching the robots beating up each other with their over-the-top attacks. It's a very fun series to get into!

How connected are the games? Obviously there is a revolving door of mechs from many many series, but is there like, a consistent metauniverse across games? Or is each game more stand alone in nature?

If OG 1 and 2 are solid games and good starting points, then it would be worth checking out...

Isn't really the same type of game.

One's a strategy RPG with giant robots, the other's an RPG with small robots.

Completely different, really.

Anyway, SRW:J is one of the easier ones, has some very nice animations considering that it's on the GBA, and has Tekkaman Blade in it, so it seems like a good place to start.

the DS has large robots too! but still, it's very much so a different kind of game. think of it as FFT is to the mainline.

and the best starting point would be the two localized games on the GBA. route you pick on the 1st i'd say depends on what you want: characters more focused on the story than themselves with a coming-of-age kind of vibe (Ryusei) or the veteran pilot squads who are much more awesome but matter less to the initial story (Kyosuke). both ways, you'll NG+ the other route, but i personally say the latter's a better starting point if you need to be sold. if you can deal with the standard shounen of high school kid turned mech pilot, then start with Ryusei.

The Endless Frontier games while tangentially related to the OG games are kinda sorta more of a spinoff of Namco x Capcom (What with having the NxC original characters plus KOS-MOS and T-ELOS as well as a somewhat similar battle system).

Only OG1 and 2, and Endless Frontier 1 have been released officially in english. Only other games that have been translated are 1, 3, J, and one of the Alpha games.

this covers some of the basic/early games:
http://hardcoregaming101.net/superrobotwars/superrobotwars.htm

In terms of general continuity/plotline/subseries I believe there's:

original continuity (2-F Final as covered in that article)
Lord of Elemental (which got remade for the DS and PSP and I think got a sequel on PSP)
Alpha (1-3 and Alpha Gaiden)
OG (OG1 and 2, OGs remake, OG Gaiden, Endless Frontier 1 and 2, and the new game that hasn't come out yet)
Z (Z1, Z2 parts 1 and 2)

and many of the remaining games are kinda one-offs I think.

If you're looking at series composition, the older games are probably more heavily slanted towards older Gundams, Shin Getter, and Mazinger, while the DS and Z games have a lot more recent series or others that would be familiar to contemporary western anime fans such as Rebuild of Evangelion, Linebarrels of Iron, Voltron, Eureka Seven, Big O, Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Aquarion, Macross Frontier, etc..

The OG games obviously do not have any anime licenses and instead seem to attempt to cram literally every original plot point/faction/character/mech from previous games into a single game. So it's naturally a bit of a mess.

Though you should take what I say with a grain of salt since I'm not really a fan, and in fact hate the series which I would put on the same level or lower as IF games. Not to mention SRW has left me incredibly bitter and jaded against the entire mecha genre as a whole.

You could be forgiven for forgetting EF has robots entirely (the PCs themselves are people fighting on foot), so yeah, it's very different in style as well as obviously its gameplay (SRPG vs. traditional RPG in the vein of Valkyrie Profile).

Super Robot Wars: Alpha Gaiden, imo. PSX, so not as flashy as the PS2 games but better than the GBA games. If you happen to like Gundam X or Turn A, it's definitely the best place to start, since it incorporates their plot.

Also has orgasmic emulated music. >_>

And this right here pretty much limits my potential games list to....7 games. That makes selection a lot easier.

Better than nothing I suppose, unless I want to break out scripts for the other games or something, but I can't say the thought appeals to me...

Assuming you're masochistic, of course. Alpha Gaiden's probably the hardest SRW, not counting the ancient ones before they worked the battle system out.

Honestly Just start with OG1. It's super easy and a pretty decent introduction to the series. SRW J is pretty cool for those reasons too.
