Once Upon A Dream and Someday My Prince Will Come. Okay, on second thought, Snow White's romantic song should be One Song instead.

17. Kiss the Girl (The Little Mermaid) – Nominated by DoctorBIind

There is something amusing about Ariel not being able to talk here being both an upside and downside. I love her voice, but that girl sure says some dumb stuff at times. Anyway if you couldn't tell from my previous write ups I actually really love this movie, it is just sometimes hard to like Ariel when she is so shortsighted. Part of the reason this movie is so great is that Sebastian has two absolutely stellar songs to go along with Ariel's classic. I miss the days when songs were used heavily to tell the story of Disney movies instead of just being songs. Not every song has to have such a purpose to be awesome, of course, but this is the perfect example of such a song. The scene is set for us by the great sounds we hear and the subtle sights in front of our eyes and the song is just very mood setting, which is fitting as that is Sebastian's stated goal in the song itself. And then the last forty five seconds kicks in and the song just blows me away every time. Twenty years after the first time I saw this on a VHS I still own this scene is just remarkably special. With that boat slowly spinning it just slays me every time. I guess with two such songs in the top seventeen I am a bit of a sucker for a guy and a gal in a boat about to kiss only to be interrupted. Mark me down for that trope!

The way Ariel emotes in this scene and Eric speaks just shows how good Disney animators and voice actors are. You can really feel the raw excitement between the two when only one of them is speaking. Ariel pouts, then she smiles wide when she feels the kiss coming, it is just a very complete scene.

I didn't mean to go on a killing spree of romantic songs after I eliminated A Whole New World, but well let the slaughter continue I guess. That is how it breaks down sometimes when I listen to a song ten or twelve times and try to rank my absolute favorites, it gets so brutal. In a year this song could be top ten for me and I wouldn't be too surprised. To talk about A Whole New World some more because I think that is Gen's favorite subject now I don't know why I placed it below these other romantic songs. I understand how popular it is and I love it as well but while I have no critique I just felt like something wasn't quite there for me. It's not a criticism, honestly, I love the song a bunch but it might be the difference between 9.9 and 10.0. I have no complaints, I just knew after listening to these songs a bunch of times that I just didn't like it quite as much Kiss the Girl and others. I guess my opinions can't always be popular, oh well I am a special snowflake.

At any rate Kiss the Girl is yet another song I could listen to all day and be perfectly content, if only for those final forty-five seconds which are some of the best forty-five in any Disney song period. It is epic, it is completely enchanting, and dare I say glorious. I really can't say enough about the big end to this song, it just captures my heart without fail every time I hear it, refusing to let go until the music ends and I have to remember where I am.

16. Gaston (Beauty and the Beast) - Nominated by BlackMetalex

It honestly surprises me how anyone who dislikes or hates Gaston can have anything but glowing things to say about this song. I love this song both because it is quite catchy but also because of the several layers the song has to it that once peeled back make it live up to its namesake incredibly well, and provides a, dare I say, epic comparison between this villain and the lead heroine of the story. First off let me start with the simple reason why I like the song: It is catchy, humorous, and over the top. The phrasing leads to some fun results and can be easily transcribed for other uses. The tune fits the song completely and allows us to be overwhelmed by all of Gaston's glorious whatever he likes to call it. I am not the type of person who dislikes villains for being villainous and so I like Gaston's simple yet exceedingly effective villain tactics of being a complete and utter waste of human flesh given massive muscle mass that is only outstripped by his eagerness to show off an ego so undeserved that the Pharaohs themselves may have built him a Pyramid in the heart of the desert just to make him shut the hell up. I like Gaston for the same reasons I like Scar. They are archetypes done exceedingly well. You might hate Gaston, and surely that is the point, but that repulsion for everything he stands for is both intended and the entire point of this song, as far as I am concerned. If you believe this is a triumph for Gaston, to show how awesome he is, you have been horribly misled, dear friend.

This song is actually about how sad and pathetic both Gaston and this town truly are. I believe that is literally the entire point of this song, to give the viewer a stark contrast to the song Belle. In the soundtrack there are only two songs named after characters, and in both of them it is the town as a whole talking about said characters. Belle, who is kind and intelligent, is seen as nothing short of the oddest of odd, but we'll get to Belle in the write-up for her song. But for this song we are treated to the amazing tales of Gaston which aren't that amazing, really. He is conceited and the town is not in any way choosing to disagree with the man. Gaston, in fact, is who they want to be. Confident, good looking, and strong. Also as empty in the head as can be. As Belle says multiple times she wants more than they could ever possibly dream, and more than their petty illusion of a hero named Gaston.

That is why this song works for me on multiple levels and how it managed to climb the ranks higher and higher. I just love listening to the song because as I said it is just so catchy, the wit in the song is amazing as it flows so well. It is a perfectly small and short-sighted song for a perfectly small and short-sighted villain. That is where it hits its mark, and that is why it is great: It captures every single detail of hero worship for Gaston while at the same time revealing him for what he truly is: A man who can talk about great deeds than do them when asked from a sickly old man. I understand, and will forever understand, why someone would not like both Gaston and this song, but truth be told I thought it was sublimely done characterization on both counts and shows just how good at both character making and song writing the Golden Age of Disney was.

No one does it quite like Gaston, do they?

15. Be Our Guest (Beauty and The Beast) - Nominated by Raka

Don't believe me? Ask the dishes! I love that line. I think someone said this scene hasn't aged well, probably Genesis as she has done a lot of the commentary behind this topic, and I can't agree. Mostly because I am a sucker for fun songs as I have said before and this song is the definition of fun. However unlike most other fun songs there is a serious part to this song that everyone in the castle is overjoyed for Belle to be there because they have grown sick of not being able to do anything. The song title is not just an offer, it is a need. They need her to like them and their master so that she will stay.

The last thirty seconds of this song, like a lot of great songs, is just crazy good. Even Cogsworth gets into it a little bit by the end and that boy is a complete definition of a stiff. Lumiere, of course, manages to steal the show both literally and figuratively with his rendition in this song. This song is definitely the highlight of the film for him and that says something considering how much I like him in general!

The scene itself is important to the movie because as I said Belle has had just about enough of the Beast at this point and everyone in the castle is completely freaking out over the prospect of staying non-human forever. This is all of them strutting their stuff, and it shows! I love all of the sights in this scene and how well the words flow and make perfect sense, which might not be such a common occurance as you think.

This is another song I could listen to at any time. It also reminds me that the movie takes place in France which I forget sometimes. “You're alone and you're scared but the banquet is all prepared” is an underrated line of the song I think because it starkly tells the situation in such an upbeat manner that I didn't think about it until I was really ranking the songs hard. Lumiere is such a pro.

I love this movie, but I am looking forward to taking a break from talking about such details too much, it is exhausting doing back to back songs from the same movie haha.

This is a great description of why I like Gaston as a villain so much.

I mean just the start of that song; he gets rejected by Belle and goes into this whiny, pathetic, depression just showing how weak he really is. He is like a petulant child during the start of that song, and the whole bar jumps in to give him an ego boost because they think he is so amazing. It's like a shared delusion! Also some of those compliments they give would be backhanded to anyone else. No one's neck is thicker, no one bites in a wrestling match as hard, stomps around, matches wits (as he knocks a chess board off a table). The whole last section are horrible things to say about a person and he takes them as compliments! I love it.

14. Belle (Beauty and The Beast) – Nominated by DoctorBIind

Is it appropriate to say that this might not even be my favorite BatB song? Something There might not over take it but there would certainly be four songs in a row from the same movie. I think the three that this song makes is probably going to freak people out, and yes I did make a joke about how I was glad to take a break from talking about the movie only to finish off the song list for said movie the very next write up. Pure coincidence that these three placed so close to one another, though.

As for the song it is a very interesting peak into the small town life as well as a great opener for the movie. It shows something very obvious: the town is silly and that Belle is amazing. Also if you don't like the opinion of “Belle is awesome” then I am afraid this writeup is going to get very tedious. Out of all of the Disney princesses she was by far my favorite for a very long time, although these days I have a bit more love for some of the others. However I guess it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that a bookworm romantic like me would be completely smitten with Belle. Gaston doesn't do a lot right, but his taste is unquestionable when it comes to women.

Belle's singing voice I feel is underused in this song, because she should sing a lot more, but I understand why she doesn't, as I said earlier in the Gaston writeup: the song is mostly made for the town to contrast between the awesome Belle and the awful Gaston. Now I decided to include the reprise in this ranking because it has absolutely no way to stand on its own in my opinion, and that gave this song a little boost because Belle sings more and did I mention just how lovely her singing voice is? I did warn you that if you didn't like Belle you might get sick of this writeup.

Anyway to get away from Belle, which I assure you breaks my heart in half, the song is so fascinating compared to Gaston. All Belle does throughout the song is read a book and be surprisingly perceptive of her surroundings yet everyone cannot help but think she is weird. In a civilized town she would not be thought of as odd, but nice and imaginative. The only good that anyone can ever comment on when thinking of Belle is her great looks, which explains why everyone thought Gaston was awesome. Speaking of Gaston, his singing parts are good in this song as well. While Gaston, the song, is about how pathetic Gaston is I think this song has the explicit purpose of making Belle as likable as possible to the viewer. They succeeded. The town seems not so bad yet, but silly and out of touch, while Belle comes off as a lovely dreamer which is something of an ideal to our generation. These two songs in combination prove just how powerful songs can be when done correctly. It is basically manipulation of the viewer the way they used them, and I can appreciate that.

The scene itself is great. It has a lot of humor, and beyond whatever subtle motives they may have had, is a great way to introduce us to the main character and the town as a whole. I have always been amused how Belle mentions a prince in disguise twice in the scene. Beyond the song as well Belle shows an extraordinary amount of kindness and gentleness throughout the song that makes her nothing short of adorable.

I barely remember going to see this movie when I was a very young boy, but it has always been a favorite of mine. Beauty and the Beast is obviously one of Disney's best, and probably one of the best movies there is to cheer me up if I am having a bad day. There is something splendidly timeless about the movie. What has doubtlessly come to life by this point is the fact that I am a hopeless romantic. I cry during movies, completely unashamed, and almost all of my favorite characters are actually the good guys, it just so happens I appreciate truly great villains and Disney has a few of those, more than their fair share compared to other mediums. I have been in love with that girl named Belle for over twenty years, and the Beast is a character worthy of her. The supporting characters of this movie are fantastic and bring to life a story that I believe no other company than Disney could ever bring to life so perfectly. If you have not seen the new ABC show Once Upon a Time I highly recommend it just for the fact that the Belle on there is so completely top tier. I was smitten all over again.

So, uh, yeah. I think I made my thoughts on the song and movie pretty clear, maybe a little more clear than some of you were prepared for!

13. Go the Distance (Hercules) – Nominated by Pram

Huh, this writeup got away from me. A lot on my mind, I guess.

Two links to the greatest male ballad in Disney history. Michael Bolton's version is perhaps the better version, and I can understand why people would think that, but I love Lucas Gabreel's version simply because he sounds more like Hercules even though his background music is pretty crappy. Now mind you they would rank the same regardless, but I just thought I'd link to the cover to see if anyone was on my side. Probably not! Anyway this may come as a surprise as a lot of people had this top ten as far as predictions went and honestly if I was doing my top ten before this started I may have been right there with you. I love this song, completely expected it to be in the top ten, and when I finished and it wasn't I was shocked with myself. However I love this song to death, as well as the movie it is from.

You have seen me say a lot that song meanings stay with me when I am determining my rankings. The message of this song is very, very dear to my heart. If I was going purely song meanings, this song would be in the top three without question. Life is hard, and whoever told you otherwise was trying to be nice and doing you a disservice. I have had a lot of bad things thrown my way in my life and I have enough perspective to realize despite all of that, despite how miserable I have been at times and all of the hardships I have gone through in my life, I am still one of the fortunate ones. I have hardships but I have the ability to accomplish my dreams as long as I work hard. Hard work isn't always enough for a lot of good people, and so to do anything less than that would be an injustice not only to myself for all of the crap I've been through but to the people who just can't do anything about the crap they have been through.

This song was one of my personal anthems through some of the toughest times of my life. It speaks not to timeless love or luck, but hard work. This song is about nothing but dedication and hard work, and it is why I love the song, why I love the movie, and why I love the character of Hercules so much. This songs fits him perfectly and that attitude of never giving up no matter what is such a strong ideal of mine that it is engraved into my very soul at this point. I have a bad day? I suck it up. I have a bad week? I suck it up. Horrible things happen? I grieve, I shed my tears, and then I pick myself back up because no one else can if you aren't willing to do it yourself. This song is an amazing tribute to the spirit of perseverance. It is also why I like Lucas Gabreel's version more, because I think he sells the emotion more even if Bolton is awesome.

The song itself, which yes I have managed to avoid talking about until this point, is very awesome and fun for me to listen to. It isn't just a song that rouses me from funks or bad days, it is a brilliantly thematic song to the titular character of this movie and in the official version the background music just oozes epic. Without being told the subject matter the way the notes play off the instruments to start and throughout lets the listener know immediately that something grand and important is being discussed. The movie version is good but not great because there are both too many interruptions in the song and the singer just isn't as good as these two. I like the scene but it holds the song back in the rankings as I try my best to consider everything when I am splitting hairs between these amazing songs.

The song choice being, by default, Hercules' theme song of sorts was a great decision by Disney when the character is taken into consideration. I said in a previous write-up that the dynamic of the romance in this movie is unique in the Golden Era because Hercules is the one that is very awesome and whose standard casts a shadow. Meg has to make herself better in order to feel worthy of him, and I just think that was a great choice for the mythology that this is based on and it worked out extremely well. Hercules is selfless, unafraid of hard work, and both the theme of this song and the movie is courage.

Like Aladdin and love, courage is the primary motivation behind some of the movie's great moments and the opposite, cowardice, is what fuels the villain of the film. My favorite scene in the movie is when Hercules is in the river of death (unsure if it was referred to as The Styx) and desperately trying to reach Meg. It is perfectly heartbreaking as we see Hercules grow old before our eyes but even as his strength fades and his life is drained from him he never stops swimming. Think about that for a moment, by the time he reaches Meg he shouldn't have any of his godly strength left. He is frail and old, and yet he manages to fight off the torrent of the dead and keep persisting on. To keep moving forward. To go the distance for the woman he loves. He would not be denied because he does not know how to give up. It is amazing how the song and the climatic moment of this movie go so well together. Not every main character's song fits so well and I really always enjoyed it. It is loose though so I am unsure if they even intended it to work out like that or if I just noticed a coincidence, but if you listen to the lyrics of the song while watching the scene I think I am on to something here. A lot of the lines fit amazingly well.

I absolutely love Hades, he is such a dick. It is a shame he doesn't have a good villain song though. Phil is remarkable even though I wish he would have never sung a note. Meg is adorable, if a bit too conniving to start out. And Hercules... well, Herc is the man.

I am unsure where Hercules would be placed in my Disney rankings, that list might take more time to figure out than the song list did. I have seen the movie a ton though and it has held up perfectly after fifteen years.

Two final notes about the song before I wrap this up. The first is that my favorite line of the song which is brought back to light during the final scene: “for a hero's strength is measured by his heart.” So true, and Hercules is one hell of a hero. Secondly I am unsure if I said this previously, it has been a long and winding road, but after “Say the Word” I locked the rankings just so I wouldn't agonize over the decisions I had made and because a lot of these songs are very fluid depending on my mood. I know it is no solace, but if I was doing a ranking right now this song would be # 2 because it just got me over a very bad weekend.

I'll go the distance though, so it'll be alright =).
