25. Beauty and the Beast (Beauty and the Beast) – Nominated by Pokewars

Went with the soundtrack version of the song, I hope you don't mind Poke. This song really brings me back to when I was a very small boy and I watched the movie for the first time. Being so little I didn't have a hope of understanding some of the complex themes of the movie and the underlying aspects to it, but I knew one thing for sure after watching this scene: I was smitten with that girl named Belle. As I grew older my fondness for both the movie and her only grew. I have plenty of songs to talk about how awesome Belle is though, so we'll get back to the song and the scene itself. I think it is accepted that the Ballroom scene of this film is one of the most iconic scenes of Disney's golden age. I think very view moments in a movie symbolize Disney's ten year period of greatness better than this scene right here. Disney and the word magic are thrown together a lot, and for good reason, but it is scenes like this one that are capable of making me a little less pessimistic about the world whenever I am having a bad day. The fact that there are people in this world capable of creating such sublime beauty with sight and sound just makes the world so much brighter even during dark times.

It is fun to poke fun of Celine Dion these days but at the ripe age of 23 the young woman was probably at her best with this song right here. Her performance here is breathtaking, and the male vocals are very strong as well, although I don't know much about Peabo Bryson other than the fact he can sing this song very well. The lyrics spin a beautiful tale of love and personal change that I believe everyone has to go through to make love and romance work out. That is the great part about what this song speaks to: it fits the movie perfectly but at the same time can fit a much broader point about life just the same.

I would say more but I still have three songs from the movie, so I don't want to wear myself out!

24. God Help the Outcasts (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

I am an Atheist and this song makes me cry. I don't know why that is important to say, but I feel it shows how well this song is done. I think if everyone was more like Esmeralda I would not be an Atheist, but that's getting off subject. I think this song is tremendously powerful and it shows how utterly jaw dropping the soundtrack is that it would place fourth on this list from the movie. Before I begin with the song I have to say on my re-watch of the movie I really enjoyed the setup they did with this song to throw the viewer off as much as possible. Before this song Esmeralda was nothing short of a complete spitfire before this song and then it is revealed the tremendous unfiltered compassion she has for others, even though we got a glimpse of it already. I have said time and time again that the message behind songs means almost as much to me as the actual song and this one highlights that well. It is does an amazing job of highlighting exactly what Esmeralda stands for and it allows Quasimodo to take a peak along with the viewer, and he falls in love with what he sees just as I am sure many viewers did themselves when she gave this plea-filled rendition.

This song replaced a louder, less subdued song called Someday and I am grateful the replacement was made, as this song is much stronger for what I feel they were going for. I thought that Esmeralda speculating that God may have been an outcast in his day as well was one of the best parts of the song, because I am sure that hits home with at the very least the large majority of practicing Christians. In the realm of fiction for a moment though many of my favorite “God”-like characters end up being outcasts, the ones from mythology, so I thought that was neat regardless. Much like the previous song highlighted something very real and very tangible about our own world and circumstances this song does much the same although I am sure many people would prefer not to be called an outcast. I won't get into too much of a debate about what is going on around the world in terms of tolerance but I will say this song would be a very good anthem for it, because if there is a God we are all surely his children, regardless of how we live our lives.

I am honestly tearing up right now listening to it again because of how absolutely beautiful this song is. I am stunned that Heidi Mollenhauer didn't get any more work after she did this song, it is superb. One final note about the people in the church asking for glory and all of that: amazing contrast and it went a long way in showing what was wrong with the city during the movie. I am going to agree with Genesis here actually, the song isn't flawless. It needed to be longer just so I could listen to more of it. Such a beautiful song.

I have left Gen speechless!

23. Zero to Hero (Hercules) – Nominated by Raka

Okay so after getting completely sappy on you all for the last couple of songs we can take a nice, deep breath and just enjoy an upbeat and fun song! Those sassy muses sure know how to make one fun song, I'll give them that. Hercules isn't my favorite Disney movie but I will say that it is one of a few that when I think of it I have nothing but fond thoughts for it, and the fact that two songs from the soundtrack beat out this one shows how much I love the songs. Unlike the other two songs this one is so high purely on the fact that is just so very fun. The song makes me clap along whenever I hear it. We have the muses, who are just very fun to listen to, singing to us while Hercules is beating back what I believe is somewhere from six to ten monsters as Hades flips his lid more than once. The song never lets you take a breath as it pounds out good lyrics and exciting music for a solid two minutes. Every time you think the song is going to down slow down a little it just picks up a little bit more and continues on until it is finally over.

I always loved when the big boar's eyes turned sad right before Hercules's arrow ran it through. Yeah there isn't much meaning behind this song so I don't feel the need to say too much else, but this song is just so awesome to listen to over and over because of how fun it is, and there will always be a place in my heart for fun songs. Also his adoptive parents hi fiving about their new house is pretty great as well.

22. I Won't Say I'm in Love (Hercules) – Nominated by CrimsonOcean

So the first thing you will notice is that this is a cover and not the official version. I stumbled onto this version while doing my rankings and I immediately fell in love with this one over the original, which is not something I can say about a lot of the songs. But as for the actual song it got this high on the list because whatever mileage you may have for the original ot this cover they are both very well sung and depart from the normal Disney “princess” song. I have a soft spot for songs that add either depth to a character or tell a story. This song does both of them quite well. The scene right before this is pretty special as far as romantic scenes go as Meg tries to dissuade Hercules from being so naïve about the world, and in a way about her, but Hercules being so completely awesome just wins her over by the end because of how awesome and honest he is. In fact the flip of the script of the female being the one who needed to work really hard to change herself is pretty special for these type of movies. I know the other disney leads had to do some minor stuff in their movies but Meg really was completely jaded with life and with the prospect of love before Hercules managed to change her for the better.

And then Hades being Hades, although he doesn't have a good villain song, he is still an awesome villain because he manages to turn all of that joy and love into bitter heartbreak. The anguish of Hercules is one of the better parts of the film in terms of story telling. Also I know this is going off track from the song itself, but I feel like the romance between Meg and Herc is what makes the song so great aside from it being awesome to listen to. That and I only have one more song to talk about Hercules so I am getting their relationship out of the way. I love the complete low we go from after this song to the highest of highs when Hercules goes into the river of death in order to save her, completely justifying her love for him.

I really love the relationship between these two and Meg's song is a great highlight to it. It feels like a really real song and it is just a wonderful part of the movie. Meg, for all of her flaws, managed to win me over right around here.

21. We Are One (The Lion King 2) – Nominated by Karo

It has been several years now since I have seen the movie, but the song always stuck out to me as a highlight even if most of the scenes have faded from my memory now. This song, like several songs to come, doesn't need the movie as a crutch though. This is just an amazing song to listen to whenever and wherever. Cam Clarke, Simba's singing voice in this movie, really delivers a stellar performance here. I think a lot of people, myself included, question ourselves and what our place in the world is and this song does a good job of both asking the question and answering it in song form. I don't think this song could be quite as high without what I feel like is a very nuanced singing job of all of Simba's parts. The voice has texture and really adds a lot to the song.

I like that the theme behind the song is something meaningful and I enjoy listening to it. Like most Disney sequels this movie was a disappointment but it didn't have much hope of following up The Lion King with anything nearly as good so that is to be expected. The first movie has two songs in the top 20 and a third that would have made the top twenty if anyone would have nominated it, so I have plenty of time to praise that movie and maybe take the time to remember enough about this movie to take jabs at it!

^Terrible. Absolutely deplorable. You should be strung up by your big toes and subjected to endless Chinese water torture and perhaps a stint in an iron maiden for your opin- oh....

(Completely ignoring Grosston)

Pretty solid list! Court of Miracles still too high for what it offers, but I can see the appeal. I've also warmed up to I'm Still Here since my own ranking topic, so I'm a bit disappointed in myself for not placing it say... thirty spots higher. For a slower tempo song, it's really not bad. However, it's still a slower tempo song so it was never going to rank in my personal top twenty unless it did something phenomenal.

I'm afraid I never got the emphatic love for Belle (the song, not the character as she's great), and as with Friend Like Me, Be Our Guest did not age particularly well for me, but the visuals alone carry it pretty far so that's understandable. What I don't understand is I See the Light. It's visually stunning, yes, but the lyrics- hell, the entire concept just screams blatant A Whole New World ripoff to me. I get the idea of standing on the shoulders of giants and everything, but that song goes beyond standing on shoulders and steps all over the face of the giant. And then wins a Grammy for it. >_>

Other than that small handful, I've no qualms with any of the choices. Stellar top twenty!

20. Court of Miracles (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) – Nominated by RySenkari

I clapped along with this song several times before I remembered I was supposed to be saying anything about this song to post in the topic for the rest of you. I think this is a song that will come as a bit of a surprise because I have mentioned a lot that I don't particularly like short songs, and that is true. However I am very fond of fun songs that manage to capture the essence of a movie and of a scene very well. Zero to Hero did that. A couple songs still to come do it very well as well. Clopin is very awesome and his use of humor, even if it is morbid for most of the song, is so well timed and well placed. In fact knowing myself as I do I am willing to say that the humor being morbid probably rated as a bonus with me. From him saying hello to him gleefully going to hang them, he shows what he is capable of if given a couple of minutes and a tune, and that something is quite a lot.

There's good noose tonight! A lot like Zero to Hero there isn't much behind the song and that is perfectly okay! The tune itself, beyond the hilarious lyrics, is also superb. The use of instruments at all the right times to highlight what is being said is completely perfect throughout. The song accents the lyrics to create a very fun scene that kind of just randomly happened during what is a very serious part of the film. I think that's what makes this song just a little bit better than it should be solely on its merits: the daring of Disney to just throw this utterly fun and whimsical song in between bad news and then worse news, right before the ultimate showdown. It just shouldn't fit in theory but the fact that they dared makes it all the better.

The Court of Miracles, beyond the song, is just an amazing scene of the movie. It is very fleshed out for such a short scene with a great attention to detail such as the costume changes and even Clopin's puppets trying to object just makes the scene stand out so much. Whoever thought of all of those small interactions to go along with the booing and the sense of atmosphere hopefully has been rewarded. The movie and my song preferences also has a strange oddity when it comes to my rankings, but I still have two songs to talk more about the movie as a whole so I'll table the discussion for now.

While I don't see Gaston getting into the Top 20 on my list I do support your choice!

It helps make up for the horrible placement in past lists.

*high-fives Raka*

We might have had our differences in our own lists, but at least we had that in common! :3

*high-fives*

Yeah, I'm simply baffled why some people couldn't see Gaston as anything but a waste of time and space.

I may have been overly optimistic about tomorrow being an end date. But have another write up!

19. A Whole New World (Aladdin) – Nominated by PrinceKaro

Do you trust me? One of the great lines in all of Disney, and Jasmine's reaction shot to the question sells it so well. I spoke about the ballroom scene being one of the iconic scenes from Disney's golden age, and this is obviously another of them. I have always loved the skepticism they expressed on Jasmine's face during the start of this scene as it tells the viewer so much about her personality. Even when she says that she does, you can tell the unsaid part was “I have no idea why I am saying it, but I think I really believe it.” Also apparently the price for Jasmine's love is to own a magic carpet and to have a good singing voice, not a bad deal for a catch like her I'd say. The song is beautiful, that almost goes without saying, and no character deserves to land a Disney princess more than Aladdin who is incredibly awesome. Oh right, and then there is the actual song.

I love Aladdin's appeal to Jasmine during this song and how she opens up to the idea as she is flying through the sky. I think that is the important part of this song, beyond the romantic aspects of course, is the freedom that the magic carpet provides to express themselves to each other more openly than they ever could before. The actual singing is marvelous and both of them do a fantastic job of not only delivering the quality that is to be expected but singing with amazing emotion and subtly weaving what they are thinking behind their words. Aladdin has so much hope in both his voice and his face during the song as he almost never takes his eyes off of Jasmine, showing joy and wonder at her as she is amazed by the sights they are seeing together. It is a very complete scene in every sense of the word.

And then it ends, with them holding hands, and it is just so sweet This song is like something out of a fairy tale. I love the scene every time I watch Aladdin, which I am going to estimate has been about a dozen times at this point.

As the highest ranking Aladdin song I suppose I should talk about the movie a little bit here. Well, obviously it is an awesome movie. Great lead character, great villain, a lot of amazing and very memorable scenes. Unlike a lot of the Disney canon though I will say that some of the strongest characters are not in the traditional villain/male lead/female lead archetype, such as Iago who is hilarious and of course the unmatched work of the Genie. I like to think that great movies, especially Disney movies, embody themes beyond the readily apparent to something more basic about human nature. I don't know if they intend to do so or that it just happens that way, but I leave most of the Disney classics thinking that something great and powerful and innately good triumphed that day. In this one it is love that triumphs. I don't think without his love for Jasmine that Aladdin could have ever become the man he needed to be to face Jafar so boldly. Aladdin was a good character all along but I think his love for Jasmine as well as what he discovered while loving her rose him to new heights and made him the tremendously awesome character we get to see by film's end. The movie is for sure in my top five of Disney films, although sorting out that mess would be tough to do without a lot of inner reflection.

Yeah I noticed that. Obviously there was no shame in getting this one wrong, and the same could be said for any song in the top 26 as they are all amazing songs and worthy of being in my top ten, they just aren't!

18. Can You Feel the Love Tonight (The Lion King)

Elton John could sing to me forever and I would be rather pleased about it. The movie version of the song is also very strong, not for its vocals but because of the characterization that goes on throughout the scene is really stellar. So I guess I am cheating and melding two different versions into one, and that's something everyone is just going to have to live with. So to start with let it just be said that Elton John is such an amazing singer and this version doesn't feel quite as personal as the movie version, but it is sung with such quality that I just prefer listening to it. Now I also understand the scene is amazing so I went ahead and linked to the movie version as well.

Now this scene is just about as awesome as you can get for non-human romance as far as I am concerned and it is one of the major reasons I didn't like Princess and the Frog very much, because Disney set very high standards for emotions out of animals with this movie. It is beautiful to watch as Simba tried to hide himself and his uncertainties about who he is and how eventually he is forced to open up. Poor Timon and Pumbaa though, especially considering how much I like Hakuna Matata the opening to this scene breaks my heart a little bit. I don't think the scene is as iconic as some of the others I've mentioned, mostly because the movie has a lot of iconic scenes, but it has great moments and again the clear emotion you can see in their eyes and their expressions is an absolute credit to Disney animation because without such quality the scene would have fallen completely flat. There is a reason why the Lion King is considered by many to be at the top of the pack when it comes to animated movies.

My favorite line has always been “Why won't he be the king I know he is? The king I see inside?” That always resonated so deeply with me even as a child. That isn't just love there, that is something even greater. That is respect, faith, and trust. It was just one line in the song but the scene is made so much better for it because of it. The scene has so many different facets to it and it is hard for me to know if I am supposed to be happy or sad. What I do know is that it is an amazing song to go with an amazing scene.

Good, good. If you're not going to include Disney's best romantic song (AWNW tbqh) in your top ten then you may as well clear them all out.

Although I just noticed something very disappointing about your list in that you've ranked the blatant ripoff song higher than its inspiration. Terrible. >_>

But that's for a write up, I guess.

I guess I can see that. For a movie that relies heavily on romantic chemistry between two characters, the element that brings them together is a very important component to how well the movie works. And Evangeline- PatF's chief romantic song- does not do that well. In fact, Evangeline is my least favorite song in a soundtrack I rank fairly high on the whole and mostly (but not only) for the reason you've stated. The fact is that it crawls in a movie with an overall upbeat score, and it's not as compelling as other Disney romantic numbers have been. There are only two things that are believable about it, and that's the "If I can mince, you can dance" line before it really kicks in, and the scene where Naveen and Tiana are dancing in the water.

As good as those two aspects are, they don't really make up for the missed opportunity that is Evangeline. As a matter of fact, the very brief instance where Naveen watches Tiana singing and dancing fondly (during Dig a Little Deeper) is much more well done and more believable than anything Evangeline has to offer. But still, I think PatF was good despite it romantic flaws. Perhaps I don't rank certain aspects as high as you do and rank others more highly.

Now I will admit in the past I've been off-base about quite a few things- but no sir, not this one! The first time I watched Tangled I watched it with three friends in a theater and they all remarked at how similar ISTL was to AWNW, and by the time we heard the phrase "it's crystal clear" we all burst out laughing. It's possible all four of us saw something you didn't, but that seems unlikely! And for the record even if I didn't view it as a ripoff it probably wouldn't make my top 50 overall. Like I said before, it's visually stunning but the lyrics and the passion just aren't there for me. Like I can feel the emotional impact of songs like AWNW, BatB, CYFTLT, IWSIIL, and even Kiss the Girl to a lesser extent than the others, but ISTL is like one tier above Evangeline (and that's not good).
