And I do like the series. 3 being my favorite. But the thing was I love the game for the gameplay. Kratos as a character is awfully boring after 5 games. I would have preferred a game where you play as his brother escaping from hades or something. But hey I have no qualms against the game being made, just I find there are far greater games coming out that will easily overshadow it.

I always knew from the end of GoW3 that there would continue to be more games. And I'm sure this next one won't be the end either. I'll probably keep buying them because I love the action and I love Greek Mythology.

....though i just now realized that i don't know which dmc he's talking about. from the spelling i'm thinking it's the ninja theory one. i assumed it's the main series just because bayonetta's out already.
still, the action game to end all action games is coming out soon - it's called Anarchy Reigns.

i honestly cared less for it because i already knew the setting in the first place, where they got things wrong/played around with too much. with the most basic of all things being that they tried to make ares a badass when he was more of a "bad boy pretty boy." didn't like what they did with the characters and they really let go on 2 to the point where if story was the goal they did a bad job if you're a fan of greek mythology as it really has next to nothing to do with it, despite trying to give off the illusion that it does. using the setting or characters as references is fine - hell i love the SMT series for that. and the SMT series doesn't go too far into someone without throwing a couple bones. that.... did not happen here. so yeah, growing up with greek mythology made me shake my head a lot and left the rest to the gameplay. which for 1, is a terrible idea because it rather sucks.

If you think it's supposed to be at all like actual Greek Mythology, then... uh... I dunno
I mean it's based around a human that goes around killing gods. It's not even trying to be at a Dynasty Warriors level of accuracy, which is already very loose. It's not even like saying the Modern Warfare series isn't realistic.

I didn't get the impression that the games are trying to act like they have anything to do with Greek Mythology. It's obviously that these characters in the games aren't at all like what they're actually like. They're all just stylized versions for Kratos to kill.
right, all it takes is names and.... loosely takes on some of the positions. not even that's done well. instead the series took on its own definitions for the positions, characters, setting, and.... pretty much everything else. they're the "same" characters in name and basic position only - but in scale, power, personality, etc nothing really worked. so if you're a fan of greek mythology yeah, it's in the joke territory. especially as it made just about all of 'em worse. >_>;

I am a fan of Greek mythology and I like the GoW games just fine. I recognize that the characters aren't portrayed correctly because they're not meant to be. So it works.
meaning you split them apart, so your liking greek mythology and your history with it become mostly irrelevant. which is all well and good, but does little for someone who goes 'game based loosely on greek mythology' only to find 'game based nothing on it,' nor doe sit do anything for the story of the game when greek mythology had better, more f'd up stories in it. hence, the story is more laughable if you're familiar with it - you know where things could've been better.
and seriously, Anarchy Reigns/Anarchy Max is gonna be awesome.

Yeah I've been watching some Anarchy Reigns videos since it was mentioned in this topic. Looks amazing. Can't believe I'm only just hearing about it now what the f***.
Also what would you suggest I read or whatever to learn more about Greek mythology? Does Odyssey have a more... modern version? >_>
well, E3's coming up and the game has a worldwide release in July so... expect to hear a lot on it then. including an idea as to how big the multiplayer is - the game's beeh hyped up to hell as being very big on online multiplayer. game is part action game part fighting game. seems to be some weird hybrid of madworld and bayonetta (which has representation from both series at that, so it's fitting - still need some vanquish love... and i expect it).
but hey, a dozen playable characters ranging from dude with a dual chainsaw arm, robot, or a pimp with F*** YOU golden teeth that will break your back.
i mean there's story too but really it's all about kicking ass. and seeing how it's platinum games, they couldn't pick something they're better at.
for learning about greek mythology, there really isn't a 'catch all' source. the odyssey is painfully long and in all honesty kinda boring to read. if you're into the whole epic poem style then sure, go for that, just be aware that it's long and very flowery in language. it's meant to be though. it's probably not recommended by a lot of hardcore fans but i would definitely say that, if you're interested in that story, to go see the 1997 movie. think it was made for TV and really well done. it's far less painful than reading the book anyway. and after a quick wiki check, apparently it was very, very well received.
movies you don't want to take away from? Troy. they removed most of what made the trojan war awesome, from both ends, made achilles less of a dick, hector look better, and paris not look like the biggest waste of space ever. i'm not sure what a good rendition of that/the illiad is.

That's why I asked if there was a modernized version of the Odyssey because I tried reading it before and I couldn't get far. Are there any good modern books about Greek mythology stories?
sadly i don't know anything recent enough as most of my greek myth reading was when i was younger. there's a billion adaptations but i don't know of any standouts.

I enjoy the series, but I never run out and grab the game as soon as I can. I waited until I could get GoW3 for $20, I'll probably do the same with GoW4.

This game definitely doesn't have a big hook to it, it would've been cooler if they went somewhere new with a different character.
That said, after the rumors and stuff I am happy that this is a prequel so it doesn't weaken the ending of the trilogy. But on the other hand, as we know prequels can often be wacky.
I'll give it a chance, for sparta.
