I'm not too picky, but I would prefer a shorter one. Like, 50 episodes or less.

I've only watched 3 animes completely, so whatever you recommend I probably have never seen before.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor is 26 episodes long and it's probably my favorite anime ever. It's pretty strange and a very relaxed series. Don't expect angst or lightsaber fights.

Heh, of course Baccano is one of the 3 I've watched. The other 2 were Durarara and Death Note.

from the sounds of it, you've seen dubbed stuff.

Hellsing Ultimate series is a goodie. it's not complete dubbed but nobody knows if it ever will be. still fantastic all around.

gurren lagann is another quality starter show, though subbed is better there.

Haruhi works best subbed but should be seen as well.

I'll second this and also give a recommendation for Slayers. Both of these are 90's anime, so there are some modern conventions that are probably lacking, but if you have ever watched stuff like sailor moon or dragon ball z it will be something along those lines in terms of animation quality.

Both Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Slayers have serious moments as well as comedy moments. Main difference would be one is Sci-fi and the other DnD type fantasy (except generally turned on its head by virtue of the lead being a greedy black magic gal).

I know it's been repeating on Adult Swim for the longest time but Inyuasha is a great one. If you want nonsensical go with Fooly Cooly. I also suggest Big O and Cowboy Bebop (older ones are still great).

....besides wanting a short show - which Inuyasha isn't - that is among the last shows that should ever be recommended because it's terrible.

Fooly Cooly's a goodie though, ditto Big O, both are older series that paved the way to great dubbing.
