For several reasons, one big one for me being, I'm not really down with paying alot of money for texting and calling capabilities. I should mention that I only like to use cell phones for calling and texting - I don't need Internet or anything crazy. They have computers for that >_>. i don't need to listen to music on my phone, that's what my mp3 player is for :)
i also tend to drop my phones alot, and/or lose them, or spill something on them. So any type of touchscreen wouldn't last long with me. And lastly, I simply don't like how 'smart" they've gotten in such a relatively short time. We depend too much on technology, and I know how insane i'm going to sound when i say this, but it just seems like we're on the path to a real Skynet-type deal. Not cool >_>

Zachnorn - whose your carrier /what type of phone do you have? i've never heard of anything with a smartphone being that cheap.
Virgin Mobile
They bumped their prices to $35 for the same plan, but I'm grandfathered at $25 per month. $35 is still a good price, though. I mean, lots of people spend $30 for a data plan alone, or $20 for texting alone.

Even ignoring grandfather deals, t-mobile has been fantastic with prepaid Android. 70 for the phone, 30 a month for what you'd use it for, and still some extra. Only charge that's extra is tax. As for the phone itself? 2010 midrange, so it can do most of what you'd want, as a beginner. Your issue is with contracts. Prepaid though is godly.

his issue is with 'the terminator'

Donny: Are they gonna hurt us, Walter? Walter: No, Donny. These men are cowards.
The best way to fight the terminator is to find his kill switch, which should be doable with a good phone. After all, if you had to pick a system, I'd say he runs on Android.

I'm so happy I'm not alone. I'm quite literally the only one out of my friends without a smartphone. I really just don't see the point. I hardly use my normal, free (excluding monthly payments for minutes and texting) phone in the first place.

It's mostly for having a mini portable computer. Long trip? Video, music, whatever you want it's there. Want some games? Wouldn't recommend much in terms of what Android has available, but depending on how good the phone is you can do some older emulation. Now yes, some systems don't do that as easily, but still. If you are on contract then yes, the hike they nail you for a forced data plan sucks. Prepaid is cheaper, simpler, and you have more control over it. Considerably more. I mean the not caring is understandable, but it's pretty useful, and once you have it going back is impossible.

I got my first iPhone 3 years ago, and haven't looked back. I used to think the same way as you, but once I actually bought one, I noticed how much I'd been missing out. It does anything. I love the built in GPS especially. I'm constantly on the go though, and I'm a very busy person in a very busy metroplex, so maybe I just get more use out of it than you would. My bill is about $120, and it's worth every penny. I'll never not have a smartphone
I also have an ancient cellphone. Only downside is I cant see pics in messages, but the bill is super cheap. And of course texting with out a keypad is funny, but I got the time.
