3DS can do everything a DSi can do and then some afaik

a bit more expensive but dat 3DS library is coming along nicely

3DSs don't cost that much more, just get it!

You'll be buying a 3DS somewhere down the line, so there isn't much point in wasting money on a DSi

There is no reason to pick the xl against the 3ds. Even price seeing how you can regularly find it for 150. If battery is a concern, nyko has a replacement that doubles it, making it better for ds games too, though those can already go for a good 8.
