I'm talking about in the gameplay, not in the story.

I know final fantasy 12 had a kind of basic version of this. Are there any others?

Oh right, I remember rainbow six. With that, you had to tell them exactly where to walk and stuff, right?

I don't know how mystery dungeon or secret of mana work... so your guess is better than mine!

My first thought was Frozen Synapse but it's pretty much the entire game, not just a mechanic.

Trailer anyway:

In Mystery Dungeon, you tell your teammates how to act:

Stay with you
Explore the floor
Look for items
Look for the exit
etc.

Even in battle, like...

Focus on your target.
Fight everything.
Run away.

Plenty of shooters.

SOCOM built a series around it.

Freedom Fighters was a solid game that did it.

You can do it in some of the Tales of games. I'm not sure how many, but I know you can in Vesperia and Graces F. Set how often they attack or if they attack at all, stick to healing/support, what enemies to target and you can even turn on/off their attacks.

Star Ocean games are the same.

Lol people mentioning Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, I haven't played it but I can't quite imagine it's what TC is looking for considering he calls FFXII "basic".

Nearly all action RPGs do this, it's not exactly special. FFXII is probably the one I can think of that takes it the farthest. Too far, most would agree, considering you can end up with the game playing itself.

Haha, thanks guys...

I tried frozen synapse at one point. I'm not sure if I would consider that style what I was thinking about, but then again I'm not sure what would really fit! That seemed more like telling everyone explicitly what to do, but just doing it all at the beginning instead of on the fly...

I completely forgot about Kingdom Hearts! The meat of the gameplay was in Sora's actions, so I kinda forgot that Donald and Goofy did anything :P And I guess Dragon Age did have a FF12 system...

Maybe I should just try to make one, where you program lil robots to go dungeon delving without knowing exactly what they're going to run into, like mars rover adventurers or something. The key would be programming them to be able to navigate a random or non-pre-set environment... so you can't 'hard code' things

:D?
