REDMOND, Wash., April 1, 2012 - Nintendo of America today elaborated on their plans for the latest release in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, titled Super Smash Bros. Fisticuffs. Intended to replace the previously announced Wii and 3DS iterations of the franchise, Super Smash Bros. Fisticuffs is to be released on the Virtual Boy, and will be the first official release on the system in sixteen years. It's part of Nintendo's new initiative to bring the Virtual Boy back into the public eye, and will be accompanied by titles such as Rad Racer 3D, Hey You Pika-Two!, and third-party title Waterworld: Extra Moist.
"As demand for 3D products is at an all-time high, we realized that the time was ripe to revisit the classic Virtual Boy hardware," said Nintendo President of America Reggie Fils-Aime. "Though we've been impressed by the 3DS's capabilities, we ultimately believe that the Virtual Boy's monochrome 3D was more satisfying, and have decided to re-release the hardware in its original and beloved form."
The Virtual Boy will be officially relaunched on July 22, 2012, and Super Smash Bros. Fisticuffs will be available on the same day. The fourth title in one of video gaming's most successful franchises, Super Smash Bros. Fisticuffs will feature internationally-known icons such as Mario, Kirby and Donkey Kong; as well as favorites from classic Virtual Boy titles, such as Nester, Jack Frost and L-Block. By connecting with another Virtual Boy, you can enjoy exciting two-player battles presented in a 32-bit, red-and-black visual style.
"We believe the world is finally ready for what the Virtual Boy brings to the table," said Fils-Aime. "The Super Smash Bros. titles have been wonderful performers from both a critical and financial standpoint, and the launch window release of Super Smash Bros. Fisticuffs will ensure that families everywhere will be seeing red - as well as black."
The Virtual Boy will be available in red, maroon, black and slightly-darker-black colors, and will retail for $199.99 USD. New releases for the system, such as Super Smash Bros. Fisticuffs and Mario is Missing Again!, will retail for $49.99 USD. Re-released Virtual Boy games from the system's original run, such as Mario Clash and Teleroboxer, will retail for $29.99 USD.
