Is there anyone that thinks "this game is gonna suck!!"? Normally if something doesn't look good people just ignore it. Maybe that's just me.

Still, I'll say Final Fantasy 9 (and simultaneously give the middle finger to the guy in the soundtrack topic, ha!)

In a way, Mass Effect 3.

I don't think anyone really expected it to be awful, but before it's release there were maybe five people on the internet still prepared to say anything remotely positive about Bioware. And it's definitely been reviewed well, even if most of 'the community' is still complaining about it.

Metroid Prime is a great answer. I don't think people were really like "wow, this is going to SUCK", but there was a lot of skepticism about whether or not the game could work, and it wound up being one of the greatest games of all time.

Mario Galaxy and Resident Evil 4 are the two high profile games that most people were skeptical of, suspecting they were further nails in the coffin of dying franchises. Instead they got two of the greatest games of their time.

For outright suck its kind of difficult because if something was widely considered to suck it'd get very little preview or pre-release interest so you wouldn't really notice. I guess those games that nobody followed their release which suddenly became big post-release are worth mentions. Valkyria Chronicles and Demons Souls are two.

Metroid: Other M

LOL JK

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a great example. Almost everyone was ragging on it prior to release, for several reasons: the graphics looked horrible in the screenshots, the original NSMB was a big letdown to many, and Wii hatred was already in full swing. It turned out to be one of the most successful Mario games ever, though, and I think it's generally well-liked in hardcore gaming circles. It certainly shocked the hell out of me, anyway - it's one of my top three Mario games.

Aside from that, there's also Kirby's Epic Yarn. Initially, a lot of people saw that it had "Epic" in the name and had a yarn visual style, and responded with a resounding "LOLno." In the end, though, it became one of Nintendo's most acclaimed games of the last few years.

Windwaker to a degree, I guess.

The first Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright? Both of those sold out because they underestimated how popular they'd be over here, if I remember correctly.

[EDIT: Actually, I suppose people didn't think those two were gonna suck, just that there wasn't much of an opinion of it, since it was new]

Initially, then it seemed to get lost in developer hell, when they finally came out with details it was soulless and looked dated. Nobody was too interested, until that redesign and the village/chainsaw video came out. Took people by surprise at that stage.

Even if your description was 100% factual, which it can't be since nobody can really say what the reaction was of everybody, we agree there was plenty of hype when people saw what the actual game was looking like with the village etc. Thus, it's not a game everyone thought was gonna suck when it was released, pretty much the opposite, it had lots of hype prior to release.

Just sayin', one of the most hyped games (if not #1) on Gamecube doesn't really fit in here. Sure it did have a long dev history with many different builds, but that doesn't mean people weren't hyped for it.

I don't think Mario Galaxy is a good example, either. All the previews I saw were very, very positive.

It's hard to think of many examples, though, because games journalism is mostly just a glorified hype machine.

I believe Suikoden was originally touted as being just another JRPG in the shadow of Final Fantasy, and it came out around the same time as Final Fantasy 7 was getting massive hype which gave it a very diminished hype of it's own. I'd say it qualifies.

Probably not the suck part, but it was off the radar for most people. I was hyping this game for a long time, saying Mass Effect could be one of the greatest trilogies ever and people were laughing. Then they started releasing more and more footage of the game and people became more interested.

Mortal Kombat 9

Not EVERYONE said it would suck, but some did and I think it's fair to say that most were at least skeptical of the claims that it would be a legit tournament level fighter. The lack of location testing alone had many in the FGC writing it off entirely, and a lot of people were shocked when it was announced for EVO. Then the prerelease demo came out with balance issues that had people expecting the worst despite assurances from the dev team that it was based on an old build.

Then it finally came out, and while not THE MOST FIGHTER EVER, it was completely legit and by far the deepest entry the series had ever seen, just as had been claimed.
