Sony had better not proceed with this lunacy.

Between Microsoft and Sony, Microsoft is the lesser of the two evils. At least Microsoft isn't requiring you to be connected to the internet to play your games or requiring you to go on Xbox Live to boot up your games. What Microsoft has planned for their next console could still change between now and when they provide more information about it at E3.

Sony's plan for their next console is worse than what we know about Microsoft's next console. If PSN goes down, you can't play your games. If PSN ever shuts down someday, you can't play your games, though I'm sure Sony would deal with that if it happens. And what if your internet dies while planning a game? Does the console kick you out of the game because your internet isn't reliable enough.

I voted for "I can live without PS3 games, but not without used ones" in today's poll. The lack of PS3 BC doesn't bother me too much, because some PS3 games could be put up for download on PSN or released as remakes.

I mean 72, I can't add two numbers correctly. -_-

I voted the same thing as Luster. No BC with PS3, while lame, wouldn't be such an extreme loss - PS3 is already HD.

It'll be funny comparing this poll to a PS4 ownership poll in a few years time, the commitment of the internet to ideals will as usual be wafer thin.

Eh I dunno about that. PS3 had a pretty damn low ownership rate for a long time and didn't really start to turn around till PS3 started to get an actual library-- I could see people staying away from it for a long time if they have good reason to and that reason persists.

Until they got an actual reason? Goes for every console. The fact was that despite all the kerfuffle over the price point and the faulty timebomb builds of the previous consoles the resistance was snapped pretty quickly with the release of MGS4 and the like. Manufacturers and developers know the will of the market is weak and a bad company rep equates to very little in sales terms on consoles. Bring the quality games and the market will bend over and take it with whatever strings are attached. Sony knows this.

what has sony EVER done in their history to make you think that they're ethically sound enough to do anything in that situation? was it the installing rootkits on peoples computers thing or was it trying to sue people for viewing a youtube video?

Eh it took a lot more than just MGS4 for PS3s to start selling. The system needed a full library and a few price drops for people to start caving on it-- which you can say is evidence that people start caving when the library starts getting too good to ignore, but it could just as easily mean that people give in when things they dislike get fixed since one of the big problems was the library. (and the other was the price, which went down naturally by the time that many games were released)

Why would price be a reason to avoid a system, long-term? MGS4, and other games, justified their purchase at $400. Reasonable people don't hold grudges over a price point; they just wait until it becomes affordable to them.

I wonder how much you think MGS3 is worth...

The point is that many people will say price points, restrictive features or a poor track record of manufacturing builds are "deal breakers" when the reality is theres always a library to bad things ratio that the masses will crack at.

If PS3's price never went down I'm pretty sure the people that had an issue with it wouldn't have cracked. I'm pretty sure that's the only part of the PS3 people were really complaining about (aside from a lack of games) so...

Why wouldn't it be? I figured blocking used games is way worse than the lack of BC. In my opinion, the 2 most hated things in gaming right now are consoles blocking used games and on-disc DLC. The lack of BC does suck, but it isn't the worst thing ever since some PS3 games can be put up for download on PSN.

Lopen's right about that, the PS3 didn't start taking off as soon as MGS4 came out. You can see the history of PS3's ownership right here:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdDZFV2I1SFl4VXFDMjQ2RmJqUXJTd0E

While the PS3 did have a good boost in ownership during 2008, 2009 was when the PS3 really began to take off and finally establish a good foothold on this site.

Thanks for the useful spreadsheets, Luster.

And Foolmo, you seriously don't see how banning used games is worse than not having BC?
