...with absolutely no knowledge of the game at all except you can build things. This was one of the game I always wanted to play back in the PS2's Golden Era but I could never find it. I snagged it a few months ago for $5 from some guy getting rid of his collection and planned to play it Summer of '13 but the users have spoken and I will knock this out during the course of Spring Break if possible. IS IT POSSIBLE?

First, let me read through Dark Cloud's plot unless there's no reference to it in this game.

And hopefully I can name my characters.

Just get a FAQ ready for your camera photo hunting in Dark Cloud 2. There's a lot of pictures you'd have to take just at the beginning of the game (you need photos to create new inventions). I had only gone through halfway through the game (up to the part where there is a volcanic area), and the Synthesis stuff could get a bit annoying at times but it really helps getting through the game.

Went with blue denim, hunting cap and wing shoes.

Fighting is kinda cool, didn't think it would be like that.

And when do I get the camera? I love taking pictures in games!

Remember to level up both weapons! And don't be afraid to make spheres of them in order to make your weapons godlike. Usually when you hit +5 and you can't level up, just make it a sphere and pump all your points into the next weapon.

So, the menu system to use items is p cool. Loved that about FF2.

What a goofy twist to start the game. I give the kid my ticket after he steals it and that passes the test?

Oh my, customizing weapons is so fun.

Okay so what exactly does leveling up a weapon do? I've been using the wrench and adding some things to it like flame and chill and now I can level it up. I can choose True Battle Wrench or ??? and when highlighting ??? it flashes Attack/Smash and Beast in red as if something will happen.

Heh. Third area of the sewer's right now. Just realized I wasn't using lock on and kept missing with the gun. I thought that yellow dot was the lock on. Few questions...

1. Is it bad to let a weapon go to 0? It seems better to wait until it's out before repairing it unless this does damage to it somehow.
2. Is there a quick way to see what every item can be spectrumized into?
3. When highlighting the next build, and it shows the things in red you need to upgrade, they don't seem to go away if you get enough. Are you just supposed to guess or is it a combo of those that let's you go to the next upgrade?

I don't remember much but:

1) Yeah, you should repair them before getting to 0 since it'll save your repair powder consumption (it costs more to repair a broken weapon).

2) IIRC there's a part of the status screen shows how much you can get out of a material. Crystals always give out 3 points, Rocks and miscellaneous stuff gives out 2 points, and some other stuff gives only 1 point (and some that gives more than 3 points). Try to only syntesize items that'll give you 3 points (Crystals) to get most out of levelling your weapons although not necessary.

Also level up your weapon to max (no pun intended) befor synthesizing them into a newer weapon. A quick way to get stronger weapons is to use the MOST basic wrench you can get and pick up EXP points on later/higher levels (kill enemies with a strong weapon like guns, but pick up the EXP while equipping the basic wrench you have).

3) I'll have to check this out later since I forgot some stuff about the game. Try checking the tutorial.

4) I don't think so. You'll have to manually memorize it. Also a WARNING, Scoops are achievements of taking pictures of rare stuff (mostly bosses) which nets you valuable items if you get the scoop. So don't kill any boss before taking their picture!! I missed scoops of the first and second boss, so I can never get them again. While you're still early-game, restart if you missed them (I realized only until 25% through the game ;_;). I think I might restart DC2 instead of continuing my save file...

You don't really have to since it gets easier and less tedious if you do it on later levels. On early levels you're probably better off just levelling normally. Basically instead of syntesizing materials that only upgrades a single stat, syntesizing a weapon to another weapon nets you more stat ups than just ordinary materials. You can start doing this anytime but I recommend doing it later once you get the full grasp of the game, probably by the time you get to the "forest" area.

Here's how to do it IIRC:

1) Buy a Wrench and maybe more if you want to really upgrade every single bit >_>

2) Kill a high levelled enemy (which means enemies you encounter on later levels) with whatever you want like a strong wrench/gun. Preferably with a gun to avoid the tediousness of switching weapons.

3) Pick up those blue EXP drops wile equipping the normal wrench and it should level up VERY quickly. Level it up till maximum.

4) Synthesize materials on to the normal wrench (don't over upgrade since there's a limit to how much a weapon can gain stats). Just use up oll the wrench's synthesize points.

5) Turn the upgraded normal wrench into a synthesis item and synthesize it on to your main weapon (you can synthesize it on to your wrench or gun or basically any weapon) as long as you still have points to spend of course.

6) You should get more stats than the usual upgrade which allows you to upgrade your weapon faster or generally just get a strong weapon.

Remember that guns come in different flavors. There's the normal pistol gun that shoots individual bullets that shoot fast, then there is also the beam gun that shoots slow but powerful beams, and finally there are the machine guns that fire continuously but will struggle against enemies with thick armor. (I think there's another type but I can't remember)

Got a little stuck against Halloween because I could never connect when I threw the bombs back at him. I did take a picture of him, this is the first boss you were talking about right? I eventually went back a bought a few breads but of course the very next try I was able to hit him all the time and found out I had to hit AROUND his nose to do the real damage. Can't wait to get outside this sewer. It's like leaving Midgar all over again!

Oh and I went back and wrote down all five list I found.

Gotta love the music that plays when you clear a level

Just to make sure you NOT ONLY need to take picture of the boss, sometimes the scoop requirements might be a little tricky like:

1) Photo boss A when it is doing an attack
2) Photo boss B when it's doing this pose
3) Photo boss C when it's using it's special move

Etc...

So just remember to read the book often so that you're ready for it whenever it comes. I've also decided that once I'm done playing God Hand, I'll be starting Dark Cloud 2 again because of this topic.

And how I get these scoops? I talked to the guy underground and I somehow got 6, what's triggering him to give them to me?

Working my way through the forest now. Saved the little guys and spent too long fishing. Monica is pretty cool, love her hair. I've been upgrading everyone's weapons pretty nicely accept I can't seem to get enough Attack items to level that aspect up. I'm assuming this is common and there's nothing I can really buy to increase it just yet. Having the three guys as support is pretty cool, Cedric is especially handy because he can repair the robot thing in dungeons. I never seem to get much experience using that because it loses health so fast and I don't have anything to repair it with. Which brings up another problem, I feel like I'm losing health like crazy and sometimes have to stock up with 10 breads just to make it through a dungeon. Can't get blocking down yet, maybe it's because I want that extra hit.

Should clear this forest up tonight.

Alright, last level in the forest and then I'm done. But gonna stop there for the night. Hit a tough couple of dungeons but then I upgraded my machine with the water gun and it's soooo easy now. So I knocked everything out with 1-2 shots and then switched to my regular wrench, got that to +5 and used the 20 pts to upgrade it with my extra crystals. Didn't expect I would need 5 pts just to use it. My wrench is going to be ridiculous when it's done.

And should I be waiting till I hit +5 before moving onto the next stage?

It's your call if you want to upgrade every single bit you can. On later levels reaching +5 is really easy. Also once you get a higher tiered weapon, start synthesizing the next tier of wrenches (Battle Wrench, and so on...) and the next tier, and the next tier, depending on how far you are on the game. That's because higher tiered weapons like the Battle Wrench will give more stat bonuses when synthesized on to your main weapon.

Tip: Build the forest town's river around it instead of through it since it doesn't look wierd. I kinda disliked the limit of stuff you can build/place on the forest town because I thought it could've looked much better if you can put in more stuff.

Currently working on building the town now, got a ton of recruits to join my train squad which is awesome. Looks like I need Adel to move in, but I don't recall anyone by that name, is she the weapon shop owner? I couldn't get a challenge from her when I hit "Be My Friend" because all she said was "Oh you saw me in the Circus? It's a hobby of mine." and that was it. What do I need to do?

Oh Adel is the maid, but yeah got everyone in town except for the guy that wants me to bring him a 60cm fish, the guy who helped me underground (still need one other coin), and the coffee shop lady who wants a picture of a rare flower. What do I need there? Do I have to save it with me or just have it in my idea bank?

Anyway, cleared the forest, fixed the town 100%. I had to cheat a bit at the end because two things weren't showing up and stayed '???' How do I unlock the requirement? The two in question were building the fence around the house and putting someone in a straw house. The prize for 100% is amazing, Jurak's gun! Guess I'll have to take my old gun and spec that into it. Did a bunch of leveling so I should be ready for the next area. 8 Medals too.

The tutorial explains it. Try adding/decorating stuff like adding chimneys, lamps, and fences on houses. Go creative on whatever you want and make the town's design to you're liking. Of course the build limit kinda sucks for the first town but I think it gives just enough room to design it yourself.

Went crazy in the valley level adding things and that didn't seem to do it. I'm going to assume it's by finding the geospheres in the levels and the reason I couldn't get every ??? revealed is because there's that path that's blocked for now. How do I get passed those?

Currently 70% done with the levels, I'm looking for something tso the cook can make his miracle dish and save Lin. Both of Max's weapons are incredible, I was fused a strong weapon with each so he's set for now. I spectrumized my original gun into the gun I got from 100%'d the first area and just got Monica a stronger sword. Love tearing through enemies now.

I haven't gotten to unlock the newer areas (the ones with stars) on my last play but you can go through paths with the Sun or Moon symbol by entering them on the appropriate time be it Day or Night. Also don't underestimate Monica's bracelet since it was probably the strongest weapon on my last play (which I didn't finish). Just remember splitting the Fruit of Edens evenly between Max and Monica, and also note that there is a GLITCH on the future valley area. Consider checking the board FAQ on Dark Cloud 2's message board since it lists some of the glitches you may be wary of.

So anyway I've also started DC2 again today since I'm done with DW5: Empires and God Hand. Time to take pictures! Oh and you might wanna check DC2's weapon FAQ. It lists the most efficient way of synthesizing weapons on it's "Weapon Recipes" section which involves using cheap buyable material instead of crystals which you won't find often, at least until you unlock the crystal shop.

Kinda, but not the drops. It's just the consumption of them as synthesis items for your weapons. Like sometimes you have plenty of flame crystals but what you really need is another type of crystal for your weapon. That where the crystal shop comes in. They sell crystals (around 300 gilda each IIRC) for you. Since later levelling synth weapons becomes easier, so do the amount of points for you to synthesize items to.

I have a feeling that the english dub altered some of the dialogue in this game. The mayor sounded like a total wimp, contrary to his facial expressions and the so called "grape juice" is obviously wine. The voice actors though, did a great job even with the altered dialogue. It's one of those games where gameplay outweighs the story (which by the way I find decent). It's more like some old school games that had emphasis on gameplay and the story is just like as for completion.

Well anyway I just got to Sindain after photo-ing the hell out of Palm Brinks. That Baron Hangin' scoop was a complete pain in the ass because it's attacks are randon and you had to be right in front of it to get the scoop. Got my first diamond earlier than last time, and I heard that the Diamond will be an essential ingredient to one of the inventions so you better save it since they're rare to come by.

Yeah, I've given up on the monster scoops. I got one or two but the rest just don't happen when I try to take them. I have saved the Diamond so yeah, good there.

I'm a fast reader so I tend to press X during the dialogue and it seems like their animations sometimes keep going so there're these really weird pauses which may be making it awkward.

Lol, yeah the gameplay and mechanics are what make it for sure, Max has some pretty awful .... well mostly everything with his voice and story.

The story isn't great but it does what it needs to for the game to be playable. I basically abandoned Max once I could.

Have you played Dark Cloud 1? I personally liked the first just a little more even though it was technically worse.

Anyone know where do I get the "Letter" photo? I'm missing that from my album...

Also I just checked some FAQs and thankfully King Mardan (The Holy One a.k.a giant queer fish) will only be used for a temporary ability-upping potion invention recipe. You can also miss 10 scoops or 25 photos and can still get all of Donny's prizes.

I seem to be getting bad luck with crystals from chests and drops. I haven't had a SINGLE flame, power, or protector crystal in 5 hours since I fought the elephant. I got lucky by getting a Dark Coin though...

It wouldn't. There's a grand total of 2 characters carried over from the first game. And one of them is more or less in name only.

The big scoop to miss is probably either Linda or Halloween, really.

Yeah, Linda and Haloween caught me off guard on when I first played. Thankfully I got them in this restart but instead I missed the ****ing giant fish (which thankfully isn't important for inventing). I forgot how much I loved the forest dungeons in this game, and I'm now up to the Rainbow Butterfly (got to make sure getting the scoop).

woooo, valley 100% complete!

Now, should I just focus on one weapon per character or two? I got the cool sword for getting 100% but I already have a really nice sword for Monica. Should I just get this to +5 and then just fuse it over? How far can these things advance?
