I'm going to start the game later tonight (probably without a playthrough topic. We'll see... sorry) and I've heard a lot of complaints over the years about how tough it is to make sure your character's development (chosen feats, skills, 'should I wait to use these levels until I become a Jedi', etc.) travels along a decent path so you aren't screwed later on.

I don't really want to be screwed later on. I'm thinking of rolling a light-side Soldier who will become a Guardian. If I do so, what should my starting stats be? Any advice on feats to take? Should I horde a few levels until I become a Jedi?

I very rarely willingly choose not to go into a game blindly but I've just heard some horror stories on KOTOR.

Hmm, really? Alright, maybe the people I heard b****ing weren't justified. I just remember seeing a lot of it over the years and thinking to myself, 'well that might be annoying'.

Don't go Scoundrel/Sentinel in KotOR 1 and don't bother with Alertness, either (Alertness is useful in the sequel, though). You can probably ignore Computers, Open Locks, etc, and just have a companion be your skillmonkey. Dual-wielding is absolutely superior to using a single weapon even if you're a Consular, make the feats to wield two weapons at once your highest priority. I don't remember if using a lightsaber and short lightsaber or a two-bladed lightsaber is better, though. Ranged weapons are only useful at the beginning of the game and for your companions (I know there are some specialized ranged builds out there, but for a regular playthrough, nothing touches lightsabers).

Longsaber and Shortsaber is best if only because you can customize both of them instead of one doublesaber, IMO.

But yeah Soldier->Guardian is like the easiest and most fun route IMO. Bring someone good at the skills your bad at and have somebody support you. YOu'll do most of the asskicking.

This game isn't hard. As long as you don't go blasters, you'll be fine.

I beat the game while knowing jack-all about the stats or classes or anything.

It's significantly easier if you do know what you're doing in that regard, of course.

Just focus on having fun!

Oh, and don't use Mission in your party. She has a lot of skill points but she is completely useless in combat.

Man, I have to wonder about all the b****ing I read on the internet over the years then. XD

I'm sure I'll have fun, I've done some D&D with friends and I love Mass Effect, the other big space opera from BioWare. And I can customize lightsabers, which I've always wanted to do TBH.

Watched my girlfriend play bits and pieces of this game last year, actually. She didn't like the combat system very much but she's kind of an extremist; she looks action-oriented real-time games and isometric FFT/Ogre Battle/Fire Emblem sorts of games. There's no middleground with her!

Anyway, she loved the storyline and I'm sure I will too.

Also have somebody that isn't heavily invested in energy weapons or keep a vibrosword onhand, I remember getting stuck for a loooong time on one boss that had a huge energy resistance and all I had was lightsabers.

Duly noted. I'll probably have someone use blasters just for variety's sake regardless. I heard enough of HK-47's dialogue to recognize the cause of his popularity. He seems like a good choice once I can use him.

Soldier/Guardian?

You really can't go too wrong with that. A lot of feats. Nothing too hard early game for the soldier class and late game assuming you go light side which you already said you can just have party members solve all your problems.

10/16/14/10/12/12 or something like that will work just don't use Vibroblades much and Strength isn't important as long as it's not negative.

I remember on my first playthrough, for some odd reason I didn't put any points into drain life/chaos field or the stun/destroy robots skill.
Which makes the final fight a b**** >_>.

Thanks, Sytha! Strength isn't important though, hmm? That's sort of puzzling. Do lightsaber-related attacks factor in Dexterity instead?

Blasters are actually good in KotOR.... >_> Well the Pistols are. Rifles are meh and Heavy Blasters suck.

Lightsabers use Dex or Str for to hit, Str for bonus damage.
Blasters use Dex for everything.
Vibroblade uses Str for everything.

Str is pretty much the throw away stat of KotOR1... Funny how that worked out. It just doesn't do that much for you.

Also I've beaten KotOR with no weapons before. So yea it's pretty easy game. But yea there is fun stuff to abuse. 2/18 Soldier Guardian is really really fun. 7/13 Scoundrel/Guardian is another favorite of mine. Scout in general is pretty solid. I personally dislike Sentinel. But it has some decent stuff.

Huh, Strength as the throwaway stat. Well that's just... I'll be damned. Might very well be the first time I've ever heard of a game with such a gig. Fascinating.

Dex is defense+Lightsaber to hit+Couple random skills+Reflex+Blaster Damage and hit
Strength is Lightsaber to Hit (It picks between dex and str for the higher one), Lightsaber damage, Vibro everything
Con is Fort+Health gain+One more thing IIRC It's actually not that great in KotOR1 either but in 2 it's the best stat IIRC.
Wis is Will+Force powers+Couple skills
Int is Skill points per level+a bunch of skills
Cha is the main skill in the game and using dark/light force powers when not of that side.

Dex kinda beats everything to death for some reason.

Cool stuff. I really appreciate all the guidance, Sytha.

I would imagine Wisdom is pretty important since you become a Jedi pretty soon, yeah? But if I'm rolling light side I won't be using as many offensive powers as I understand it, so probably not quite as important.

I keep wanting to read more EU stuff but I'm always reading how just about every Star Wars fan ends up picking a spot and just pretending nothing else happens after that because things fly off the deep end for everyone who reads these books at varying points.

Like... apparently Darth Maul didn't die in Episode I. OK, sure. Whatever you say, people.

If you're interested in EU books, at least read the Thrawn Trilogy. I think it's a bit overrated, but they are legitimately good books.

Oh, I did read those... when I was like nine years old, heh. Then I re-read them when I was 16 or so. Obviously I remember a lot more from that point.

My EU begins and ends with the trilogy as far as post-ROTJ is concerned. Luke trained the children when they came of age (which as I understand happens in the books anyway) and it was Better Times (TM) for hundreds of years.

None of this 'oh, the original trilogy conflict was nothing, now we have like... so many Sith and crazy s*** and if you thought the Rebel Alliance's new government would hold for more than a few years you were so idealistic and man, we're gonna turn this dude Dark Side because f*** it man, Capitalization Is Awesome and oh yeah, this kid's dying because George Lucas intervened, and oh man' crap.

Carth is actually really strong. Use him if you want.

Any combo of Carth/Zaalbar/Jolee/Juhani/Canderous will likely do extremely well. Bastila/Mission/HK are okay but feel really gimped to other 5 and T3 is kinda a utility character that you can pretty much just trade out all the time.

If you do run Carth or Canderous... Care with your money, they needs a lot of it to be good. (Carth more so then Canderous. Good Swords are pretty much free. Good Blasters tend to cost money.) Also make sure to run Tatooine first. Better drops if you do it first.

Mine ends at the end of the New Jedi Order. It's a perfect ending to the saga of the next generation and it's quite uplifting.

Then they went and ruined it with everything afterwards.

And I'm surprised you haven't played KOTOR yet.
