For a second I was like "They made a game out of it?"

I read the book about 13 years ago and watched the original made-for-TV movie from the 80s. I haven't seen the updated version, but it's on my Netflix list, but I've heard that it deviates a lot from the book.

I really don't think it does much, beyond adding the effects that are necessary to make a feature film based on the book that is aimed at families, I think it's pretty much a spot on adaptation. The trailer and marketing was really dumb though and makes it look like something it isn't.

IMO it's a difficult story to market to families, especially for kids who have never experienced the death of someone of or close to their own age.

i had never heard of the book when i saw the movie for a YA literature class in college

i thought it was crap in the beginning (the cheesy painting montage and mediocre CGI didn't help) but it hit me like a freight train when it reached that "turning point"

certainly wasn't expecting that
