Amon is one of Aang's kids. Maybe he inherited energy bending from that.

Second episode even better than the first
My prediction for this show is that the Equalists somehow invent a chi-blocking technique that can permanently block bending and they target Tenzin and the three grandchildren as the last air benders to eliminate air bending altogether. Tenzin's wife is pregnant with a future air bender so she will be in danger too.

Anyone else kind of find it weird how Amon simply tells people he took away those guy's bending forever without much proof? The effects were only seen in a short amount of time that I don't you can really tell the difference between what he did and normal chi blocking, which was seen earlier in the episode. But everybody takes his word that the block he used was for forever.

There was an interesting theory I came across

basically the theory goes that Amon didn't really energybend but made it seem that he did. In "The Guru" the guru talks to Aang about one of the chakras being based in the forehead and being blocked by illusion or whatever so maybe Amon did something with that and "blocked" the bending but didn't get rid of it

They clearly avoided showing a clear view of what was going on, though. He probably just made it look like Energybending according to the records of what Aang did, but really he just secretly implanted some device or something.

Just saw episode 3. Thoughts...

- Kinda lame that shooting lightning apparently only requires like moderately competent firebending skills now. I mean the gang leader dude knowing it would be fine but... Mako and some random dudes at the power plant knowing it kind of takes away its uniqueness. I mean yeah we have metalbending cops but I figured they were like the SWAT/special forces team or w/e and it wasn't that widespread.

- I guess guy with lightning sticks is the new Combustion Man. I was expecting Mako to pull a fast one on him and redirect his lightning. Perhaps he will learn to do it later after some waterbending inspiration from Korra. After all, that is how Iroh learned it.

- I have mixed feelings about pushing the Korra/Mako thing so early. On one hand it avoids having to deal with rabid shippers (although I'm sure there will still be some) but on the other hand it's kind of boring to establish the official couple so early on.

- Yeah Amon is totally not spirit/energybending. It's probably just advanced chi-blocking that takes longer (maybe a few days?) to wear off. Calling it now, he's gonna do it to Korra... she'll freak, do a spiritual journey (hello Aang) and unlock her bending again.

It's almost definitely not energybending, but there's no way it's something that just wears off in a few days/weeks. That would completely undermine Amon's entire publicity stunt if not long down the line, the Triple Threat Triad leader can suddenly firebend again. I think it's something that can be "cured" in some way, but will leave you unable to bend until fixed.

As for the lightning bending, one theory I heard was that the Fire Nation royal family had been keeping the secrets of the technique to themselves, and Zuko revealed it to the rest of the nation after becoming Fire Lord.

Aang/Katara was established immediately. Didn't stop Katara from having other guys that she was into and making the romance interesting, especially when Zuko got involved.

Didn't Iroh invent it when studying Waterbending? I figured he taught it to Ozai, and then Azula learned it from Ozai. But yeah it is kind of strange to see lightning/metal being bent so casually. But still, the city is built on metal and electricity so it has to be common.

That episode was awesome. Loved the muted tones and slick animation while they were tracking and fighting - made the situation seem hopeless for Korra and Mako. It's interesting to have a party without a particularly friendly or gregarious character. Probably just a one off though. Oh yeah, Amon already has ten times the presence Ozai ever did.

Hrmmm..

with regard to energy bending...
The lionturtlething told Aang "before people bent the elements they bent the energy within themselves" and then he showed/taught him energy bending. They made it sound like it was something everyone did, not just the avatar.

Also I found it interesting to note that during the first show there was a 100 year gap in which very little changed in the world. Aang froze himself in a block of ice, 100 years past, and yeah a massive war broke out and a long got conquered, but it sounded like most of the conquering occurred during the first time the comet passed and then things kind of stablized after that.

But EVERYTHING has changed since the first show ended. (what like 60 years?) The nations have homogenized into one entity. For the most part I really like the way its playing out. "Technology" of a sorts has come SO far and I while I think it's a little strange that 'difficult' bending forms are commonplace I think it is also a side effect of the unity between the nations?

Though if firebenders (aka lightningbenders) are the reason that everyone has power and if earth (aka metal) benders are the reason that cars and buildings are as sophisticated as the way they are then why is everyone clamoring for the revelation? Don't they realize that society as they know it is built on the back of the positive aspects of bending?

Actually the separate nations do still exist, though though each separate nation is not as homogenous as they were before. They've formed a sort of United Nations kind of thing, but each still has its own government and such.

You guys should look at the Welcome to Republic City "game" on nick.com, it has a decent amount of extra information, like backstory on the Republic and more info on some characters.

Yeah, when the Fire Nation ruled most of the world, they were actively suppressing technology and advancement. That's why not much changed in 100 years. This time, Aang and Zuko actively tried getting everyone together and formed Republic City and let technology advance freely. It's like how technology advanced so much in the US during the Industrial Revolution, compared to any given 100 year period in Ancient China or something.

From: Forceful_Dragon | #238
Don't they realize that society as they know it is built on the back of the positive aspects of bending?

I was thinking about this, too, but if you look at the anti-benders... they have some serious technology that doesn't require bending. It's not JUST bending that lead to cars and electricity and such. Like in the original Avatar, the Fire Nation had tons of intricate buildings... but they didn't use any Earthbenders make them.

Also yeah I hope we get to see more of the world than just Republic City.

Benders still have a lot of grip on the city, when you think about it. Just look at their police force. Outside of maybe some desk jobs on the inside, it's entirely populated by metal benders as far as we know. Fire benders might not be the only source of power, but they're a major one. The triads are made up of benders and are actively harming citizens with their bending.

It's like being born a non-bender just puts you at such a massive disadvantage from the get-go. I'm sure there are more than a few people who just wish they could shoot fire and stuff like that, but I'm also sure that you've got people concerned that they have such an exclusionary police force that they fear might have some special interests.

Though in the old series, benders had way more power than the normal guys, too. I guess because of the Fire Nation, the benders were seen as hero warriors and not the "1%". Though I wonder what non-benders in the Fire Nation thought of firebenders...

I think it's half a decreasing respect for bending/benders and half technology advancing to a point where non-benders can fend for themselves but feel like benders are trying to keep them down. I don't know for sure, though.

Ty Lee could block chi in like 2 hits compared to the many that the Equalist guys needed, and the Equalist guy was taken out so easily by Korra, even if he did take out Mako. No one could ever even touch Ty Lee. Maybe a group of Equalists would surpass JUST Ty Lee, but if you add Azula into the mix, I really don't see how the Equalists can be stronger. Not to mention that many of their attacks would be useless against an Airbender.
