Take a song in your iTunes library, select "start genius" and post the playlist that comes up. Note the base song.

1. Learning to Fly - Tom Petty (base song)
2. Beast of Burden - Rolling Stones
3. Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival
4. Jeremy [Live in Mansfield, MA] - Pearl Jam
5. Get Back [Live on the rooftop] - Beatles
6. Pinball Wizard - The Who
7. D'yer Mak'er - Led Zeppelin
8. Refugee - Tom Petty
9. Never Let You Go - Third Eye Blind
10. Live and Let Die - Guns n Roses
11. Handle With Care - Traveling Wilburys
12. Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones
13. Proud Mary - CCR
14. All You Need is Love [Cirque du Soleil version] - The Beatles
15. Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
16. Yellow Ledbetter [Live in Mansfield] - Pearl Jam
17. Long View - Green Day
18. Dance the Night Away - Van Halen
19. Surrender - Cheap Trick
20. Up Around the Bend - CCR
21. Even the Losers - Tom Petty
22. Rock the Casbah - The Clash
23. Yellow Submarine - The Beatles
24. Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springsteen
25. Mr. Brownstone - GnR

The purpose of genius is to get similar music into one playlist without you making it, and... I guess it succeeded there. I was expecting a few more early 90s songs, but I guess I don't have too many. Otherwise it got some fairly standard classic rock in there.

This. The iPod is my MP3 player of choice (specifically the iPod classic), I find it the most organized, easy-to-use, and the best size-storage ratio. Plus I enjoy watching videos on it so it's got a great screen size. And iTunes is far and away the easiest thing to use with an iPod.

Because with Winamp you can play any kind of audio file, and there are plugins for obscure ones like ogg, and you can set up all kinds of key bindings for playing and seeking through music and jumping to a specific song and you can QUEUE SONGS and you can get a lyrics panel that shows what the lyrics are for the current song.

yeah winamp is kinda cool for weird extensions but you don't see them that often

mpc-hc and vlc have no real edge that I can think of though (aside from perhaps downloadable plugins-- but they're outclassed by winamp there I think)

I use itunes primarily for my ipod but at the same time it's a pretty decent player. The only real drawback I could think of is that it might be demanding on system resources for what it does but if your computer is good you don't really care about that

You can queue songs and have a lyrics panel in itunes?

And can you maximize/minimize it instantly with one button?

You can create playlists in half a second, which is virtually the same thing, and you actually do have lyrics panel, yes.

wat

Do you know what queuing songs is? It's when you're already in a playlist, and you choose what song plays next, without stopping the current song.

Uh yeah, that's not hard at all in iTunes.

Create playlist, drop song you want to play into playlist, play song. If you want to "queue up" another song, just drop it into the same playlist.

I don't see the functional difference at all, but I stopped using Winamp over half a decade ago, so maybe you're just not explaining it well.

Well I've listened to enough video game music to have used winamp for it at least! That's pretty much the only use I've ever found for it, though.

And uh the queue thing I don't really see the use. I don't pay enough attention to my music player as it's going, and if I'm paying that much attention to "queue songs" I can do the following steps:

1. Make a new playlist with the one song I want to "queue". Enter that playlist when the current song is over.
2. Right click and add songs to that playlist that I want to "queue" as I come to them. They'll play like a queue as long as I don't get through the playlist.
3. Repeat step 2 often enough that the playlist doesn't empty before my "queue" is empty.

The "often enough" clause for step 3 might be problematic, I suppose. Again it's never something I've tried because it's not something I'd care to try and I guess if I wanted to do that often I'd use a different player because it'd probably be a bit easier without the initial playlist creation step, but uh, I don't.

Enter that playlist when the current song is over.

This is the most important part.

The way I listen to music, I just have a big playlist that has a bunch of songs that it goes through randomly, but if I think of a song I want to listen next, I just queue it up so that in 2 minutes when my current song ends, that song will play, and then it will keep going through my playlist afterwards. The important part is that immediately when I think of a next song, I can queue it up, instead of having to wait 2 minutes for my current song to end and definitely forgetting to play the song I wanted.

You can "queue it up" whenever though. You don't have to wait for the current song to end to "queue" the only issue is the point of jumping to your queued list that you made a playlist out of. Which you can do a few seconds into the next song unless you have ADD and forget you queued up some songs you wanted to hear. (Or alternatively OCD that forces you to finish any song you start, I suppose)

Just ADD enough that you forget you queued songs, but not ADD enough to just jump to the song. Truly a refined amount of deficit you have in your attention.

Though yes itunes is not optimal for your dj needs
