My CRT has whacky color and no amount of degaussing will fix it. It's the ideal display for old video game consoles and I'd like to find a replacement one around 30". But everywhere I look, pretty much the only CRTs I see are used ones or new ones made for casino/arcade use (which presumably don't have the connection types I need, and most of the time don't have shells).
So has the emergence of HDTVs pretty much eradicated home CRTs from existence? I would think there'd be some kind of market for them still, between old game enthusiasts and people who want to buy cheap things.
But I do agree that there should be a niche market out there somewhere. It would be kind of sad to think that the worlds supply of CRTs is running out.
Yeah, by now it's a crapshoot to find one. It's the only reason I kept mine. Some shops may do it, especially those in Chinatown, but it's getting rare. Still, I doubt there aren't being any made as poorer countries probably use them.

yeah, I was thinking poor countries would still have a market. unless the rich-poor divide is so big that it's "either you can afford an HDTV or you can't afford a TV at all" or something.
CRTs are ideal for old consoles and arcade games because the games often look better on them between the resolution and the blurring everything together and the scanlines, and there's no lag which LCDs are still struggling with. I wonder if I can buy one of these "bare CRTs" without the casing that some of these companies sell, and convert them to what I want. or find someone who knows how to do that. seems like a lot of work though, and maybe expensive.
I think the different types of cords can solve the problems you have with switching. For instance, I saw some video on Youtube with some cord that puts scanlines on your HDTV.
And I think just getting component cables can actually make your PS2 games look amazing. I have component cables for my PS2 which I just tried once with VP2 and at least the intro looked great. The actual game, I'm not sure about.

biggest problem with that is that the HDTVs that will have all the connections you'd need are gonna be pretty laggy. there's a lot of LCD monitor options in the 1-8ms lag range but HDTVs are still almost all a frame or sometimes 2 or 3. for games like 3s where you've only got a few frames to react with a parry or throw tech that'll be huge.
also a lot of HDTVs overscan stuff too which is so silly. I realize that's not actually a disadvantage vs CRTs since CRTs do it too (and often worse) but it's one more reservation I have about switching.
I do have an LCD 1080p computer monitor I'm pretty satisfied with. no overscan and minimal lag. but of course the problem with monitors is that they generally won't have composite/component/etc connections.
yeah I think in the end I might just end up buying a used CRT or two and hoping for the best.
All the pros that play fighting games mostly play on HDTVs, why are you so goddamn picky about everything? You probably aren't going to be winning EVO anytime soon, so what is the point of this?
From my understanding, LCDs sucked for gaming when they were new in the late 90s or early 2000s. That's not the case anymore. The technology has improved, and there are plenty of gamers who play on LCDs.
IIRC, professional PC gamers are playing on LCDs now, too, and since they often play first person shooters, they have similar concerns that you would have. Just saying.
Forceful_Dragon posted... From: OmarsComin | #001 people who want to buy cheap things. Would they still be as cheap once they are no longer being produced on such a massive scale?
It's like how VCRs are now more expensive than DVD players by quite a bit.

Then get one with them. Mine has Component/Coax/HDMI and I'm very happy with it.

no one plays 3S on an HDTV, but that's besides the point
I just made a topic because I was wondering if anyone here knew if someone still makes CRTs. it's not just about lag, it's about old games generally looking better on old displays, like I mentioned. no need to be getting upset about something so trivial. old games are an interest of mine and I often make topics related to them in one way or another.
You can really find some gems used; used to work at a thrift store and we got some pretty nice CRTs in that were dirt cheap. And we usually had a game console or two in the store that any non-****ty place would let you try it out on.

supposedly 5 star and Pyrolee were invited to test 3S: OE and when 5 star saw the LCD monitors he rolled his eyes and was like "what a ****ing joke" and Pyrolee just walked out. that's how the story goes anyway.
but yeah LCD monitors have gotten a lot better about it. not just lag but ghosting too. SRK forums keep a database of great monitors for that purpose and if lag is a concern for you you can probably find a monitor that will work great these days. HDTVs are a bit behind the curve but who knows, that might improve with time too.

Ah that's kind of cool. I didn't even know they made monitors like that, might check it out. To this point all I could find for connecting old consoles to modern LCDs was stuff like Composite -> VGA adapters and the results on those didn't look so hot.

Yeah I was thinking that would be a good possibility. Might check all the local places this week and see what I can find. Thrift stores are hit and miss but sometimes you find pretty cool stuff. I found a pair of solid Genesis controllers last year for like $3 each, that was pretty cool.
