What is League of Legends? League of Legends is a team game very similar to the WarCraft 3 custom map DotA. There are two bases, one on either side of the map and several "lanes" between the bases along which AI controlled units spawn. An overhead view of the 5v5 map looks about like this:
There is a base in the bottom left, and a base in the top right. 3 lanes connect the two bases and every 30 seconds AI controlled "minions" spawn in each lane. Everyone who is in the game controls 1 "champion" unit and your job as a team is to push your lanes and destroy the opposing base. The lanes are protected by turrets and so you need your own minions along side you to be able to kill the turrets without getting targeted by them. 2 bases, 3 lanes, 5 players per team. There is also The Crystal Scar, the map currently used for the Dominion game mode. The Dominion overhead view looks like this:
What are Champions? Champions are the powerful units that you get to control. You pick 1 before the map loads and that is the champion you will use for that match. Champions start each match at level 1 their max level is 18. The important thing to consider is the stats of the champion you select will be affected by the level of your account.
What do 'account-levels' have to do with anything? When you create an account you have a level 1 account. That is called your 'Summoner Level'. You are the summoner, and the champion you select for the match is the 'summoned'. You increase your summoner level by playing matches. Every match you play will earn you XP and IP. Earning enough XP will increase your summoner level with the max level being 30. Wins are worth more XP/IP than losses, so try to win. Your summoner level also determines: (1) How many runes you can slot and (2) How many mastery points you can allot
If you are low leveled still and playing by yourself then the game will try and pair you against similarly leveled opponents, but if you are playing with higher leveled friends then it will seek higher leveled opponents. Just something to consider when you start learning how to play.

What is IP again? IP is the other kind of points you earn when you play matches. You earn both XP and IP and IP are the points that you use to purchase runes and champions. Yes, that’s right, you have to "buy" the champions, but you get the points for free so its not a bad deal. (You can also spend real money on champion packs if you would rather not take the time to earn them) The point is that you get the IP for free so you should figure out which champions you are good with and spend it on those. When you buy a champion you will have it unlocked on your account forever. And if you don't buy ANY champions, you will still have access to 10 of them. Every week there are 10 "free" champions. But they are only free for the week and 10 different champions will be free the next week. And so if you are level 1 you still have 10 champions available to you and so try them out, figure out which one you might like to spend points on and then buy it.
And so IP is good for Champions and Runes. You can also spend *real money* to unlock champions but you can NOT unlock runes with real money, only IP and so runes have to be earned.
To sum up: You have an account that goes up to level 30 (this is your summoner level) You earn XP (to level up the account) and IP (to buy champions/runes) every time you play a match You have rune pages (with up to 30 slots) You have a mastery page to spec (with up to 30 points) (and you can respec as much as you want)
This is probably a bit over-kill and so if something doesn’t quite make sense just ask and someone will clarify. And if you are going to start playing please post: (1) Your GameFAQs name (2) Your Summoner name (this is different than your log-in name) (3) Your preferred champions. It’s just nice to know which champions people prefer to play or use the most.

I'm just genuinely curious. This topic gets (from what I can tell) a lot of attention, while the Dota topic gets barely any. Maybe it's because it's only in beta format now. I know FFD used to play a ton of Dota. I think there was something he really disliked about the game.

I played a lot of DotA back in the day but LoL does a lot of stuff better-- the laning phase an number of viable champ builds/roles in particular. Possible DotA2 helps that (though DotA fans seem to like the things I have problems with like denying so I doubt it), but yeah. Enough that I don't see myself going back to DotA (also having a bunch of champions and stuff or this game certainly doesn't encour1age me either)
Course there are some things dota does better too but... given the choice I go LoL

I personally didn't care for it. The community is far more cruel, as well. My opinion right now is that I don't want to put in the enormous amount of time it would take to learn the game for the privilege of playing with those people.

Both of them have just as much trash talking, flaming, etc etc. That doesn't change. LoL's community is a joke, however, because of how much handholding Riot does with bad players and whiners, catering to them rather than helping them learn.

It might just be because in DotA you have more power over things but in DotA games you're often kicked out of the game before it even starts because of something you said or whatever. In game you'll basically get flamed for small errors-- forget feeding. Missing a deny or having a weird but viable first item will make people flip sometimes. It's not always this bad, mind you, but yeah, it's often enough that it's worth mentioning-- at least it was 6 years ago.
DotA's community to me is like a bunch of people waiting to flame you, actively looking for an opportunity to do so. LoL's community is like a bunch of people who are unassuming and then overreact a ton to their team not winning and start flaming then.
Big difference. The reactions of LoL players are usually justified, but overblown. DotA come off as a bunch of nerd ragers chomping at the bit. LoL isn't great, but it pretty much wins by default there.

So far in Dota 2 I've experienced none of that. They have a queue, so there is no more kicking people from matches that I know of, and the raging isn't nearly as bad as you say - LoL has it just as bad.
But then you compare the fact that Dota 2 has so many more tools in place, even in beta, to help teach players than LoL that these are easily correctible mistakes.

I feel like this is probably the most fair assessment of the community.
Like, I get that some people are just petty trolls, but most guys I get in games with are decent enough to start with. If the game starts to turn sour, they start getting pissed, but in a way that makes me believe that they just didn't want to lose another 30 minute game .

I was big into WC3 customs. I played DotA in the first few weeks that it was really starting to get steam. I wasn't very good at it. The community was unforgiving. It was a lot easier for me to spend my time on other games, rather than try and get better at something I initially sucked at.
The matchmaking system of LoL makes that a ton easier. Hence why I now play LoL.

Interesting appraisals of the DotA1 and LoL communities. I more or less agree with what I'm seeing.
My approach to both games is usually to only get upset when it is a 'serious' game. (A high level dota game like a clan match, or a ranked LoL game). I try to be as forgiving as possible otherwise.
Another great match with Fiora and I made enough to buy Leona. I'll definitely need to tinker with her item list a bit, but not as much as with Fiora. Oh, and I'm having fun with her too :D
So, itemwise for Leona:
Frozen Heart (from Glacial Shroud) -> CDR boots -> Aegis of the Legion? I figure mostly focus on aura items.
Skillwise, W,E,Q, and then max in that order, taking ult whenever possible.
So, what other items should I look for as Leona?

I am now becoming acquainted with the downside of playing a support/tank: Watching your team's Ashe, Ryze, and Riven run away from the Fiora ineffectually hitting you between stuns. Also, watching your team's Singed try to poison your own minions and complain that the game is broken.
Still, there is something to be said for being able to shrug off a Judgement.

Armour and MR isn't so important on Leona; you get more than enough of that when it matters from her W. As for items, CD reduction is useful so Shurelia's gives her a lot of what she needs. If you're playing her solo top you really need to build her as a Trinity Force off-tank. For support, Shurelia's and Locket is a good core, and then whatever you need from that point on.
