It's weird, because I've really liked music for a long time, but until now, there's never been an album I've listened to and just innately connected with the music, but I can't stop listening to Best Coast's ST, and it's just different. All of the music just gets me.
Not really. I like Best Coast. I've seen them live.
I just think lyrics tend to play a large part in the emotional resonance of a lot of music, and Best Coast's lyrics are almost exclusively about boys and getting high.

No other band sings about these things.

I am a huge music connoisseur, and I can safely say lyrics have never once played a part in my emotional connection with music.

Yeah, regardlesss of the weirdness of Yoshi's post and everything else, saying lyrics haven't mattered to you is a lie, and nobody cares about how much music you know because this is about personal preferences, not broad taste.
I think that the songs that affected myself the most emotionally didn't do so because of the lyrics but because of how well the artist could channel her emotions through her voice.
Lyrics are extremely important though but they don't make or break a song for me (who has been a huge fan of asian music until 3-4 years ago).

Yeah, this is part of it too. I mean, there are some artists that just ooze sincerity.
There's a lot lot lot of good music out there that does not have lyrics. From a strictly musical perspective it's not ridiculous at all. That's why people can watch opera written in Italian and walk away satisfied. Or listen to a piano work, or whatever.

The album I've connected with most strongly on an emotional level is Sigur Ros's Agaetis Byrjun, and I have no idea what they're singing about. So yeah, I'm firmly in the "lyrics don't really matter" camp.

It's one thing to say lyrics aren't necessary. It's another thing to say no lyric, ever, has connected with you.

No one said you can't emotionally connect with music without understanding the lyrics.
Takfloyd claims that he never connected with music due to the lyrics, which is insane.

Oh! Well yeah, that's foolish. My favorite song of all time is Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" because it's such a heartfelt and gorgeous song, both in composition and lyrical content.
I should really read more than just the first few posts before I comment.

What, really? And here I thought I was going to convince everyone. Then later I was planning to have you all refer to me as "Lord Takfloyd". My schemes of usurpation have failed before they even began! This is truly a travesty!
I love good lyrics, but I don't need them to create an emotional connection with a song. I can love the hell out of a song with vapid lyrics if the production is good. But if I hate an instrumental or a beat, I'll rarely make it to the lyrical part, or at least pay decent attention to it....
