4 is the only great one, I'd start there. you can probably pass on the rest unless you really like it.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 is a solid enough game. Worth checking out.

Can't speak for any of the other DS/PSP games, although I highly recommend PS4 if that's available to you.

get Sonic's Sega Genesis Collection for PS3, it has all of the original 4 Phantasy Star games on it (you have to do something to unlock the first one, but 2-4 are playable right off the bat). also don't listen to OmarsComin. 1, 2, and 4 are all amazing games and some of the best works of art to be produced during their time period, especially considering the limited resources that were available to storytellers who chose to use the medium of videogames back when cartridge space was actually an issue in terms of how much you could fit into your game. 3 is a very unique game and the only one I wouldn't say is great, partially because they tried to achieve too much and the aforementioned problems proved to be too much for the task. it's still worth a play though because it contributes a great deal to the phantasy star canon and is a very ambitious game for its time.

When you say "the DS/PSP Phantasy Star games" I don't even specifically know which games you're talking about - when people think Phantasy Star normally either the Genesis games or Phantasy Star Online are what come to mind. The latter is what the DS/PSP games are going to be affiliated with unless they're ports of the Genesis RPGs.

I don't even know how many Phantasy Star games are on the DS. There's like... Phantasy Star Zero? That game was all right. I don't really know the PSP ones at all.

Only ones available to me, really.
