So any idea which one should I go for? I'm more interested in the Old Testament than the new on.

Do you want an easier to read version? A more accurate translation? A more "normal" sounding version? Does changing male pronouns to gender neutral ones in places bother you?

Well the more accurate translation would be the best no? Because that'd be the highest quality of info right?

(I'm reading this for research)

Then yeah you probably want a more accurate version.

NIV and NRSV are good. I've heard good things about the New American Standard version that was done recently. Stay away from The Message, The Rock, anything King James, and NLT.

I'm pretty sure only the most hardcore theologists would call you out if you got your information from one of the less accurate translations.

Especially since if you can't understand what you are reading accuracy isn't worth much.

Just avoid The Message or similar "modern style" bibles for anything academic or research based.

I've got a scenario for a story which is heavily based on christianity so huh, I want to know my ****.

And if I'm to do thorough research better go all out. I've got a really huge library 15 minutes away from my apartment anyway.

It's what I use as a study bible, and is the standard for my denomination so I won't argue against it. Only issue I see people have with it is the gender neutral thing. But I find that almost never changes the meaning of scriptures.

Oh. No one will actually call out anything you get wrong, probably. You could probably even just read a summary of the Bible and be good.

But good on you for striving for accuracy, anyway. In your case, I think you're probably better off getting whichever version you can understand. Minor translation differences shouldn't be too big a problem if you're just writing a story based on Christianity. I thought maybe you were doing a research paper or something.

King james, first bible translated to english

This isn't quite true, there was a william tyndale translation that wasn't the best.
It was however the first good translation of the Bible into english.

As someone who has read the entire bible cover to cover (I really do not recommend that btw, I did it just so I could say that I have) I would recommend the NIV for the old testament and probably the KJV for the new testament. I really like the NIV for the most part, but I believe there are errors in the translation, which I'm not going to get into in great detail about. However, the reading is much much easier and faster. If you want to read great lengths of the old testament where it is mostly historical instead of doctrinal, the NIV is certainly the way to go. On the other hand, the KJV is great for the new testament where I think the language used is very important to understand the doctrinal meanings of the text.

Agree with plum on this one. NIV is best for simply "reading the Bible". KJV is preferred for New Testament and is generally considered the most accurate.

Well there's a decent chunk of the old testament that isn't in the Christian bible, but appears in the Jewish ones, plus there are versions of the bible without Revelations and there are other "apocryphal" sections as well (as if half the book isn't apocryphal in the first place, but I digress.) There are also "Gospels" that were never accepted by the church.

If you can find a quest study bible, it has a lot of...footnotes, I guess you'd call them.

It's basically a bunch of the most common modern apologetics. It will also help explain historical context, which would probably be useful if you didn't have 15 years of sunday school.

scroll down to the table. The most common bible you'll find in North America will be the protestant version.

Not an expert on this, but I'd be pretty shocked if KJV was really one of the most accurate translations. It was translated around 1600.....I'm sure they did a great job with the resources they had, but we have much more access to original texts now, so it's be pretty astonishing if the modern translations were less accurate.
