(Japanese figures, all pulled quickly from Wikipedia)

Crisis Core sold 350k in its first week, 790k in its first year.

FFXIII-2 sold 524k in its first week, and 697k in its first two weeks. It's almost certainly ahead of Crisis Core already, and if not it will be shortly.

A perfect comparison to 13-2 is.... you know, 10-2. Not incredibly different, portable spin-offs.

Um, sure, because FFX-2 (as well as Dirge of Cerberus, and others) did nothing to greatly lower the expectations of all subsequent FF spinoffs. You'll never see an FF spinoff put up those kind of numbers again ever, and you would have to be crazy to expect it... is what I want to say, except you apparently seemed to be expecting that from FF13-2.

Also I have no idea how you can cite "portable" when talking about Japanese sales figures, like that would be some sort of negative! Being portable didn't stop Dragon Quest 9 from outselling Dragon Quest 8, for instance.

Not necessarily. Sales in Japan are extremely front loaded. Games will usually sell 80-90% of their lifetime sales in the first two weeks there. XIII-2 isn't breaking a million, putting it at around 40% of XIII's sales. That is a hell of a drop, and far, far worse than the drop between X and X-2. Of course, FF sales in general are down (mainly due to the death of console gaming in Japan, it's all about handhelds) but in terms of sales relative to the original, that's pretty bad. Still, I imagine it could be profitable due to not costing very much.

Square may overdo it on the remakes, but both DS FF remakes were how you do a remake right.

That's not the point.

The point is that all people want from SE nowadays is remakes of the same old stuff over and over, and more stuff for Nomura to do before making Kingdom Hearts 3. And then they complain when they get FFXIII.

I think XIII-2 will ultimately outsell Crisis Core, but it won't be by much. It'll still be profitable, because it reuses many of the same assets and has a much lower budget that the original, but the comparison is X-2, not Revenant Wings. XIII-2 has far more in common with a new mainline game than it does the two portable games.

If I could only pick one, I'd choose TWEWY2 over Kingdom Hearts 3.

Not usually quite that front-loaded, though. 90%?

Looked around a bit, and VGChartz has it at 780k as of last week. I don't like VGChartz much, but they're relatively more reliable for higher-selling games and it is about where I'd expect the game to be now, so yeah, my comment regarding the Crisis Core comparison does stand.
