Bond was set at $23 million Wednesday for a Los Angeles elementary school teacher who allegedly took bondage photos of more than two dozen students in his classroom -- $1 million for each of the 23 counts he faces of lewd acts on a child.
The 400 photographs collected by investigators include some showing suspected semen-filled spoons at the children's mouths, a sheriff's investigator said.
The probe started when a film processor gave investigators "over 40 photographs depicting children in a school classroom, with their eyes blindfolded and mouths covered with tape," a Los Angeles County Sheriff's statement said.
"Investigators learned that some of the photos depicted suspect Mark Berndt with his arm around the children, or with his hand over their mouths," it said.
Some photos show female students with "what appeared to be a blue plastic spoon, filled with an unknown clear/white liquid substance, up to their mouths as if they were going to ingest the substance," the statement said.
Other photos showed "children with large live Madagascar-type cockroaches on their faces and mouths," it said.
The young students "didn't realize they were victimized," sheriff's Sgt. Dan Scott said.
"They thought they were being blindfolded and gagged as a game," he said. "And they were rewarded with cookies or spoons full of sugar (but) they did not realize the spoon contained semen."
The photographs also showed "a large 3-inch cockroach that would crawl on their face," Scott said.
I can't imagine the things I would want to do to this man if one of these children was mine. Hell, I want him to die an agonizing death right now and I don't even know any of these kids!

I know. The education system these days is mind-bogglingly bad, who can't do simple math like 12+12? Really makes me scared to have kids too if this is how well they'll learn
yeah, I always thought people like this were revolting but it's become a stronger sentiment in the past few years since my niece and nephew were born, and they're not my kids. if my kids were ever involved in something like this I think I would kidnap the person responsible and torture them to death slowly over the course of many years, and that would still be too good for them

and I know what you mean Liquid, I've noticed the same thing in myself once my niece was born. We actually had a scare recently where her babysitter's husband was arrested for raping his daughter and I had brief emotional moments where I wanted to go deal with the guy myself just on the basis that he might have done something to her too (he didn't, thank god)

How does a guy like this pass a background check?
And what were the parents doing? If my little sister had something like this happen to her, my mother would've ripped the teacher a new one. My mom was busy raising 6 kids, had a job, and still had time to ask us about our day and actually listen.
Not ONE of the parents happened to hear about this before the film processor found the photos? I know they complained about not hearing about it from officials... but shouldn't they have been talking to their kids?
But they said they thought it was a game. They didn't think anything bad had happened.
Definitely something you'd think ONE of the kids would tell their parents about. "Hey mom, we played this weird game in class today!" Which should set off some alarm bells.

That is disgusting. It's great he was caught, but he's already done damage. It's gross and somewhat amazing at the same time that people like this can keep finding jobs where they can victimize people. There needs to be more examining when hiring people. Most are normal, but I feel like this type of thing could be prevented a lot more often if people put as much effort as humanly and legally possible when looking to hire someone.

I don't think anybody would imagine a situation like this actually happening. It seems like a story about a teacher victimizing his/her students makes the news at least a few times a year though. I feel like there has to be something more they can do to make sure people like this won't ever get hired.

Yeah, the guy needs punished and hopefully rehabilitated. But the people in the comments saying stuff about him needing to be killed for this? Uh. He victimized a bunch of people that didn't even know anything happened. Yeah, it's gross, but I suppose as long as they never stumble across the article, they won't know anything happened, and technically they were unaffected.
But it's sick crimes like this that is pushing the country to a police state. People read something like this, and want cameras everywhere, and for the government to kill on sight, and to do extensive background checks, and to automatically spy on everyone's computer, etc.

So this guy got caught because he didn't use a digital camera AND he thought that people who develop your film don't, like, look at the pictures after they develop?
And he's a teacher?

Just because you don't know that something happened on a conscious level doesn't mean you aren't affected. It's still terrible exploitation in the most sick and disgusting way. Although the article didn't really give that many specific details, we're kind of left to speculate on exactly how the "game" went.
He could have told them it was a game where they have to taste-test something, and guess what it is. From their perspective, they basically closed their eyes, and got a cookie or sugar. That doesn't sound like anything that would ruin their childhood, even on a subconscious level. Of course when they find out about this, it will.
I'm not defending the guy at all. Don't take that the wrong way. I'm saying that he needs to be punished and rehabilitated, no doubt about it. I was more commenting on the people who are worse than the teacher, who say stuff like "He needs to die" which would take this country in a worse direction than anything he did.
