This game is awesome.
And yes good GOD is it hard. If you think the bats early on are hard, wait til you start encountering some stuff in a few hours. But like, well, as you said, Dark Souls, it's a very fair hard. Got him, man that ******* was harder than any boss in Dark Souls easily, I had to like block all his attack while Sana was pumping heals on me and attack nice I saw an opening. Fortunately Sana used diamond dust a fair bit and it helped a lot.

BTW if you have wheel slash, the best way to beat Merkids I find is thus:
Get close, guard their first strike, wheel slash to behind them > reverse thrust > wide slash > slash > combo slash If you don't have wheel slash, they're a pain in the ass though. I'm torn. This looks pretty sweet, but the prize is steep, I've still got lots of Skyrim to play, I'll be getting FFXIII-2 soon, and I still have about 300 hours worth of unplayed Steam games. I think I'll wait for the inevitable future sale.

I know someone was having menu lag in here. If you're using a dual monitor set up, try disabling the secondary monitor when playing the game and that should fix it.

I wouldn't call it a particularly good fighting game! Movement is a little awkward too (might be better with a gamepad). Platforming was really bad.
