Couldn't sleep for a variety of reasons last night, so I ran out to wal mart and got a bottle of 5 mg. Took two of them, was able to sleep for a couple hours. I'm still feeling it now and it makes me too tired to care about anything. Couple that with the antidepressants killing my anxiety and this works for me.
I did not check any restrictions, but I'm not too worried. This could all just be a cry for attention, anyways, and what better way to get attention than something bad happening? I haven't decided if I like doing this yet, but for now it works.
melatonin takes like over an hour to have any effect on me and even then it barely helps me fall asleep, it also gives me really creepy dreams and makes me want to murder people when I wake up...
Never had melatonin, but I generally sleep on a couch, and I end up waking up a lot.
I should ask my doctor if melatonin is right for me. I hope the side effects don't include hair loss, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or rashes. I also hope I can take it while I'm pregnant or may become pregnant.
SlymDayspring posted... you should probably check restrictions on that. i dunno if it is an issue here, but serotonin syndrome is not something you wanna mess around with.
melatonin is supposed to be safe to take like 3mg consistently for 3 months or so, it's not something you can use constantly though. I use ZMA and L-theanine whenever I want to crash for a long time, no sleep aid I've ever taken has actually helped me fall asleep though, it can only help me stay asleep and sleep deeper but it nearly always takes me over an hour to fall asleep regardless of what I take or do
ah, I missed that part of the OP. I myself have pretty much never taken prescription drugs, don't trust the pharmaceutical companies and I sure as hell wouldn't trust antidepressants.
Overall melatonin is pretty safe (your body makes it after all), but if there is some imbalance or you just need an extra nudge, supplementing it is pretty awesome for getting sleep without resorting to more pharmaceutical type drugs.
With regard to the dosage, I would take much less. As little as you can still feel the effects from. 1-3 mg should suffice. It isn't so much an overdose risk as it is telling your body 'i need THIS much melatonin to sleep' and it just screws around with your melatonin levels a bit. Nothing weening off of supplementation can't fix though.
Aka, I wouldn't take it every night, but for occasional insomnia or sleep schedule adjustment it can be a lifesaver.

There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out
I've heard that taking a lot of melatonin actually makes it less effective, like if you take a ton of it you'll get the inverse effect and will actually be more awake. idk like I said, my own experience was that it didn't affect me one way or the other going to sleep, I just had weird vivid dreams and woke up feeling like a blood thirsty animal for a few hours
