Because the guy has been the face of the university for more than 40 years, had thousands of players under him many of whom see him as a father figure, is considered one of the best coaches in history for helping make his players into good people, and despite the recent stuff he still kept Penn State to a higher academic and ethical standard than most football programs.

but people are sad about it who did not go to his school

and even then

what he did kind of cancels out 'did good in football'

if my ACTUAL FATHER did these things i would not be like "well he was like a father figure to me so it is ok"

No, no it didn't. He was the face of the school because of football yes, but it didn't matter whether he was doing good or not. Holding people to a high ethical and academic standard has nothing to do with how good they did. Having players see him as a father figure and being well known for developing his players into good and responsible people has nothing to do with how good they were at football.

sorry if i dumbed that down to 'good at football' but I thought it didn't need to be explained further

developing his players into good and responsible people

let's not go overboard here, we're talking about young adults, he wasn't an elementary school coach or anything(maybe a good thing...), these are people who've already made it most of the way through their developmental phase.

Why is he the face of the university? Because he's good at coaching football.

Crappy football coaches don't become the faces of their universities, they get b****ed at, fired, and forgotten.

i am pretty sure i get what he is saying

i just do not consider 'he was good at coaching football and was an important part of certain people who live in the areas life' to trump the other stuff to the point where his death is some national tragedy where people who didn't go to his school feel bad about it for some reason

Initially, yes, but because he was so well-respected and loved by all who he coached and mentored, that got him a lot of leeway and kept him his job through a lot of extremely mediocre seasons that many coaches would have been replaced for. It goes both ways.

He made some horrific lapses in judgment with regard to a man he considered a friend, and he rightfully got fired for those blunders, and his reputation got rightfully tarnished by it. But his reputation was strong enough to still be overwhelmingly good in spite of his grievous mistakes.

He won national championships and became un-firable from a football perspective. Don't see how that's somehow different from what I was saying.

uhh he almost certainly knew about the reports from 1998 too since Sandusky was investigated by multiple police departments, and was (probably) forced to retire the next year when it previously looked like he was a shoo-in to take Paterno's job whenever he retired

College Football is very much a "What have you done for me lately" business. If Nick Saban somehow managed to go .500 or worse over the next 3 or 4 seasons, even he would probably be on the hot seat, despite winning 2 National Titles in the last 3 seasons.

Paterno wasn't kept around through the '00s because of his past successes at football, and certainly not because of any sustained current success.

Even taking everything at face value and presuming that Paterno didn't have any prior knowledge of Sandusky's alleged actions (which is a stretch), it still sets a very bad example for someone touted as a leader of men to just do the bare minimum of what's required when something this serious is at stake.

Legally, yes, Paterno covered his bases, but "just following school policy, no more no less" is not the sort of example he should be setting from his position.

It does set a bad example but can the school itself even claim to be above that? His superiors told him to do nothing so how can they fire him on the grounds that he should have disobeyed them and done more?

Maybe because people want to remember the good things he did do over those 46 years. Yes, he made an awful decision toward the end of his career, but I don't see how that automatically cancels out every good thing he ever did in his life. It's not like we found out he was a mass murderer and every good thing he ever said or did was a lie or something. I'm not trying to condone what he did by any means. It was wrong, and he was rightfully fired for his negligence. But that doesn't mean he's now a horrific human being who never accomplished anything of worth.
