Initially, yes, but because he was so well-respected and loved by all who he coached and mentored, that got him a lot of leeway and kept him his job through a lot of extremely mediocre seasons that many coaches would have been replaced for. It goes both ways.
He won national championships and became un-firable from a football perspective. Don't see how that's somehow different from what I was saying.
