Damned purge. Was considering bumping it yesterday, but I saw that there had still been continued discussion so I thought it was safe from purging for longer than it actually was.

Anyway, when we last left off, we were nearing the end of Silph Co., as well as nearing the end of the sign-up list.

Well, I found myself unexpectedly unable to play yesterday, so here we are. I expected Meowth to be the first one out, so I moved GTM to the top...it turns out Weezing was up first. Poka's Dig does most of the work, then he Embers for the win. Arbok and Meowth are OHKOed by Dig and Double Kick, respectively. For Giovanni, I send Sour Suor to the top of the list, only for a Nidorino to come out. Dig criticals for the OHKO. I send GTM out against Persian...

Persian's quicker. Bite lands a critical hit. GTM is OHKOed.

I send Ayvuir out. Persian Growls, and Ayvuir uses Confuse Ray. It hurts itself in confusion twice before Ayvuir puts it to sleep and starts eating its dreams. Rhyhorn is then quickly dispatched by Sour Suor's Surf. Nidoqueen survives the first Surf and Body Slams Suor; plenty of health left, but I'm forced to use a Full Heal to combat paralysis. The second one crits, but Suor is strong and remains alive with 17 HP (out of 116 at full health). Even without a crit, another Surf would finish Nidoqueen, but a crit is exactly what Suor lands, and Giovanni is defeated. I have Hobo fly us back to Fuschia City and replace GTM in my team. On second thought...how about rerouting to Cerulean City first instead? I retrieve Cody, teach him Strength and Submission, and head out to tackle Route 15.

Cody is slow and defensively weak, but has a nice Attack stat and good HP. Still, a Pokémon that vulnerable shouldn't have a recoil move like Submission, so that's what gets deleted when he reaches level 34 and learns Body Slam. And since the only move on his learn list after Body Slam is the likewise recoil-inducing Double-Edge...

Everything the Bellsprout joins up at level 26 on Route 15. I'm left with a dilemma regarding Cody. Right now, all of his moves are Normal-type, leaving him without any real purpose. Most of the non-Normal-type moves I could teach him with TMs, though, are Special moves, which clash with his strengths. Wait...I've got an idea. After clearing out Route 15 and starting on Route 14, I head to Celadon City, buy a Poké Doll, head to Saffron City, and get TM 31 from Copycat, using it to teach Cody Mimic. This, along with his tanking ability (Wigglytuff have insane HP, plus Rest (and Poké Flute shortens the amount of time out of commission after Resting by a turn)), shall be his specialty.

...Yeah, his death's probably inevitable.

Hobo proceeds to break other people's Pokémon, Ayvuir eats some dreams, and the first Pokémon found on Route 14 is a repeat, a Pidgeotto. This is then followed by five straight Bellsprout, the third and fourth of which are actually at a higher level than Everything, before we finally get something that's eligible...a Weepinbell. Goddamnit. Somehow, I just knew I should've evolved Everything as soon as I got him. Catastroph the Weepinbell is sent to the PC.

Wait, Mimic would actually make Cody a perfect fit for the battle against Koga, because all four of his Pokémon know Psychic and are weak against it! I find a PP Up and use it on Cody's Mimic, then let him work over the rest of Route 13's trainers. Your death is inevitable no more, Cody! A new Calcium also goes to Cody...wait, I've got plenty of money now, I could buy more Calcium for Cody in Celadon if I wanted to! He finds himself on the giving end of the annoying Hyper Fang when he mimics a Rattata--sweet. Sweeter still is when he makes me even more money by mimicing a Meowth's Pay Day. For clearing out Route 12, though, I've got to switch Biribiri to the top. It's only fair, because he needs training too even though he's going to be nearly useless in each of the next three Gyms.

Geez, doesn't Designated Magikarp Trainer usually at least have a full complement of six? I just fought a trainer with two Magikarp and nothing else. Also, I sent Cody against a trainer's Nidorino. Double Kick barely did a thing despite being super effective.

LOL-worthy moment. Against a trainer with five Pokémon, I let Biribiri take the first one, but switched to Cody for the second, which was a Meowth. Immediately Mimicked Pay Day and spammed it for the rest of the battle, and since Meowth had used Growl on him a couple of times to begin with, most of her Pokémon needed two hits to be taken down. I got 480 Poké Dollars for the victory and 656 from Pay Day (her final Pokémon was also a Meowth, and it used Pay Day once as well). ...Okay, time to try out Fuchsia Gym.

Crap, forgot to move Biribiri out of the top spot. First trainer leads with Drowzee; I switch to Cody but he switches as well, to Kadabra. Kadabra's faster and lands a crit Psybeam before being OHKOed by Body Slam. Just to be safe, though, I have Hobo take the Drowzee afterwards. One Drill Peck is not quite enough, but Confusion doesn't cause its namesake status effect and the second Drill Peck does it.

Koga knows Psychic? Huh.

In Yellow version he does; he has three Venonat and a Venomoth. For a point of comparison, in Red/Blue/FireRed/LeafGreen, Sabrina has a Venomoth.

Next trainer has a Hypno, level 38. It moves quicker than Cody and crits with Psychic, taking him down from full health to the Red Zone; Body Slam takes about half of Hypno's HP. I use Hyper Potion; he uses Poison Gas and succeeds. I try to fight through it since the opponent has just one Pokémon; he uses Confusion and lands another crit, and Body Slam doesn't take Hypno out. I send Hobo to finish the job.

...Maybe we're not ready for the Fuchsia Gym after all. Then again, maybe we are.

There are Sandslash in here too, which means sending Biribiri out after all.

I'm not entirely sure I like challenging a Gym Leader when none of my own Pokémon are even as high-leveled as his lowest-level Pokémon, but I think we can pull it off. Cody, at level 40, leads off--it's best to have him go first, since he needs a turn to Mimic the opponent and it's best to do that against his first Pokémon, which has the lowest level.

Immediately Cody is hit with Toxic. I Full Heal, and his Venonat tries to use Sleep Powder, failing to put Cody to sleep. Koga uses X Attack, and Cody OHKOs his first Venonat with a crit Psychic. Venonat #2 also leads with Toxic, and is also hit with Psychic. I decide to just fight through since Venonat will be done in another turn, and get hit with a fairly weak Psybeam. Time for another Full Heal as Venonat #3 comes out. The Venonat's Psychic is...not so strong. Koga uses another X Attack, and Psychic takes out about half its HP. A successful Sleep Powder. I play the Poké Flute on the next turn, and using typical computerhax, he responds with another Sleep Powder...failed! Next is Double-Edge, which was powered up by the X Attack. It's good, but not enough to take down Cody, and Psychic takes out the third Venonat. Now it's Hobo vs. Venomoth. I lead with Fly as Koga uses another X Attack.

...Critical Hit! Venomoth was OHKOed!

...WHAT THE F***************!!!!!!!!!! And here I thought that it was the old systems that reset with the slightest jolt. Before I can save, or even get the Badge itself, everything in this post becomes null and void due to me accidentally bumping the GBA SP into the laptop.

Armed with foreknowledge of what the other Gym Trainers use, I'm better able to set up for each one's first Pokémon, which results in Biribiri being level 34 rather than level 33 entering the battle with Koga, and still having everyone else at the same levels they previously entered the battle at.

Luckily, the second attempt goes just as well as the first. Cody gets through the first two Venonat without even having a status effect inflicted once, albeit with more damage taken so I had to use a Lemonade. Hobo took a little longer to take down Venomoth, too, and took quite a bit of damage, but still pulled through. Now to see about acquiring that Slowpoke...

Headed out for Route 19. Kind of worrying again how the map is configured as to what is considered Route 19 and what is Route 20, or rather how it shows it. Biribiri is moved to the top of the list so as to better weaken the inevitable Tentacool. I somehow make it all the way to Route 20 without encountering a single one, thereby allowing me to confirm what's what; I fly back to Fuchsia and stay on Route 19 until I get one--level 10, of course, named Santa. Then it's time to engage trickeration. While the possibility of running into yet another member of the Nidoran family is a risk in any area, and with Jeffrey dead, a NidoranM/Nidorino would be considered fair game, Area 1 looks like it offers the best options. I head out there and begin to waste time, running out the step counter.

...Goddamn Nuzlocke. In the time I'm there, I encounter a Scyther, four Tauros, and even a couple of Chansey. Also, Gen I Safari Zone mechanics are weird. (Yes, I'll admit that I attempted to break the rules to get Chansey, because it failed anyway.) "Missed the Pokémon", seriously? Anyway, in order to reduce the number of valid options, before setting back off for Route 20/Seafoam Islands, I withdraw Insane from the computer and give her a Rare Candy, since she was captured past the level at which she evolves and her evolved form is normally found in that region.

...Crap, I ran into a trainer. Thought I'd cleared them all out. Gonna have to go back into the Safari Zone again. For the sake of my own sanity, this time I just walk around in circles in the non-grassy portions of Area 1. There, done. Now, safely to the edge of Seafoam Islands, and up and down and up and down and up and down and...nothing. Goddamnit, don't tell me they did patch this glitch out of Yellow Version!

Sighing, I start fishing. Turns out you can't fish while surfing in Gen 1, so I have to go to land. After multiple failures to land anything and one repeat (Tentacool, of course), I land a Staryu. I lead with Night Shade, then use Confuse Ray; it nearly kills itself as I try to put it to sleep, but snaps out of it just in time to Recover. I confuse it again; it still uses Recover to get the rest of its HP back. I Night Shade; it snaps out of confusion but doesn't Recover. I just keep up the Hypnosis until it's asleep. A Great Ball is sufficient. Let's see, Staryu's learnset...Tackle/Water Gun/Harden/Recover at the moment (Level 30), with Swift to be learned naturally at Level 32. Minimize at level 37 could also be useful, but if I feel the need, I could always just buy another TM for Double Team since the moves have the same effect. So barring the possibility of keeping it a Staryu all the way to level 47 to teach it Hydro Pump--which is more powerful than Surf, but its lower accuracy and far lower PP make it a less valuable move--it could be evolved very soon.

Yeah, I no longer feel the urgent need for that Slowpoke. TM 29 for Psychic is used on Crazy the Staryu, who will get STAB on that move after evolving to Starmie. Of course, the question now is who is the most superfluous member of the team? Probably Hobo, because Poka can also use Fly. I put Crazy at the head of the party to gain experience and purchase a Water Stone. I'm going to wait until level 32 to evolve it, though; sure, Swift can be taught by TM, but why waste it when it can be learned naturally? And I definitely want that move; Sabrina's Abra has Flash as its only move, and her Kadabra has Kinesis.

Of course, better safe than sorry. I Surf on Route 13 anyway. I figure that without the STAB and with Slowpoke a Psychic-type as well, Crazy's Psychic shouldn't take it out in one hit just yet.

I have no idea whether or not my theory would've been right under normal circumstances, because it was a critical hit. Ah well, at least I'll have my Psychic-type soon. Next up, Route 21...There is nothing of any use on Route 21. The only "valid targets" at the moment are Raticate and Tentacruel, both evolved forms of Pokémon I do already have alive. Speaking of alive, I fear for Crazy's safety--yeah, it'll soon be an awesome Starmie, but at level 30 and as a Staryu, it has just 62 HP.

Rattata, Rattata, so many Rattata! I'm afraid that the Pokémon Mansion Pokémon is going to end up being a Raticate, but nope, it's a level 26 Grimer, named Speed. Crazy, now a Starmie, handles everything except Rattata/Raticate, because Psychic takes care of the Poison-types and Surf takes care of the Fire-types. For the rats, I use Ayvuir--still untouchable when facing a Raticate, not so much so against Rattata because they're at a high enough level to know Super Fang, which as a set-damage move is not affected by invulnerabilities. Against a trainer who leads with Electrode, I momentarily panic and forget that Ayvuir can switch in and be assured immunity from everything except Sonicboom and try to just overwhelm it before it can explode--luckily, this works, a crit Surf OHKOing it. Ah, here's a Raticate with a high enough level to know Super Fang...for pure levels, the Rattata and Raticate here really would be worthwhile additions, but, well, we don't really need them anymore. Rattata's a very useful Pokémon early in the game, but by the time you reach Cerulean City or so, they're pretty much unnecessary due to the fact that you need more type specialization while still being annoying as opponents due to Hyper Fang and the like. I get through the mansion to find the Secret Key. Theoretically, this ought to be a good place to train, but in reality, it's mostly filled with Rattata and Raticate. (Of course, as soon as I write that, a run of Grimer shows up.) I take the "proper" route and open up the exit after I'm done, then deposit Cody briefly in order to pick up Ctes the Aerodactyl. (I double-checked the map after arriving, and Pokémon Mansion does count as a separate location from Cinnabar Island. When I try to deposit Ctes, though, I'm told that the box is full, so I switch to Box 2, deposit Ctes, retrieve Cody from Box 1, and switch back to Box 2 just so I don't have to worry about remembering to do so after my next capture.

Well, bumping this yesterday proved unnecessary, but I can't rely on that forever so I might as well continue. Heading out east from Cinnabar to train against the trainers in the western half of Route 20, I come up with a few observations.

* When a multi-hit attack lands a critical, all of the hits deal critical damage. This was changed in later generations.
* Generation I has only 1 sprite for a swimming trainer. Said sprite appears male. While "Swimmer" was indeed a male-only trainer class in Generation I, unlike in later generations, there are numerous other classes of trainers that can be found in the water--mostly Beauties, but I also ran into some female Jr. Trainers and a Cue Ball.

Crazy was in the lead spot, of course (Psychic easily beats the wild Tentacools), but against most of the trainers, Sour Suor took command. They're getting the bulk of the training because they'll be useful in the Cinnabar Gym. Did you know that Generation I has by far the least linearity when it comes to the order in which you challenge the Gyms? In Generation V, there's only one possible order in which you can challenge the Gyms. Generation IV is a little bit more open--Veilstone and Pastoria can be challenged in either order, and in Platinum Hearthome can also be challenged before one or both of them, but the first, second, sixth, seventh, and eighth gyms are always locked in a specific order. That's only six potential combinations in Platinum, and only two in Diamond and Pearl. RSE...I think technically there are 9 possibilities. Rustboro always has to be first, and Petalburg always has to be fifth, and you have to challenge Mauville before Lavaridge and Mossdeep before Sootopolis, but I think you can challenge Dewford second, third, or fourth and Fortree sixth, seventh, or eighth. Generation II...the first four have their orders locked and so does the eighth, so again there are six possible combinations, just like in Platinum.

But Generation I? Even under normal circumstances, there are very few restrictions. Pewter has to be first, Cerulean second, and Viridian eighth, but other than that the only restriction is that Fuchsia has to be before Cinnabar. That's 60 possible combinations. Once you add in Pokémon Stadium 2's Game Boy Tower and item box system, it opens up even more, because then you can actually get a Fresh Water before reaching Celadon City (that's why a Key Item was introduced to give to the guards instead in FireRed/LeafGreen), thereby allowing Fuchsia or Saffron to be the second gym challenged. The only restrictions other than Pewter first and Viridian last is that you need to challenge Fuchsia before Cinnabar, Cerulean before Celadon, and either Fuchsia or Cerulean before Vermillion--in all cases because the HM associated with that badge is needed to reach the gym.

...Actually, technically there's even less restrictions. Due to the delay before NPCs take actions (as I noted repeatedly during my trip through Pokémon Tower, as wild Gastly attacked me as I was entering the "protected zone", as I stepped into a trainer's line of sight, and as I entered the square where I encountered Marowak's ghost), there's a glitch involving pausing the game, saving, and turning off right as you would normally be stopped by that NPC at the edge of Pewter City, thereby allowing you to continue onwards to Route 3 without acquiring the Boulderbadge. So it's a really non-linear game.

I head out to the Power Plant and am surprised to find a trainer waiting near the entrance. I decide to skip all item balls until after I get my Pokémon for the region, and end up with another case of getting the evolved form of a Pokémon I already have, a Magneton. Lacking any truly new sign-ups, I'm forced to go with the other main account of one of the ones that had already gotten a Pokémon named after him (which actually was the one he first used to post in my original topic) and call it Natwaf. Unlike Fawkes, Natwaf actually does have a high enough level to know an Electric attack. That said, now that I've collected my Pokémon for the area, it might be a good idea to get the hell out of here before getting to the end. The only Pokémon I have that could land a super-effective attack on the "boss" of this region is x4 weak to one of its attacks, and three other members of the team have a x2 weakness to one of its attacks. If I really wanted to take out a level 50 "boss", I'd be better off going to Seafoam Islands--Suor wouldn't be affected by Ice Beam as badly as it would by Thundershock, even though it has a higher base power. (Overall, though, I'd say Articuno and Zapdos got it about even in the attacks department, because Zapdos compensates for having Thundershock by having Drill Peck instead of Peck. Moltres got it the worst--Peck and Fire Spin to start off, and instead of a powerful same-type attack at level 51, it gets Leer--although it does get an actual attack instead of a status move at Level 60. Problem is, it's a 2-turn move. This is the problem with Thunderbolt and Fire Blast being Gym TMs.)

Well, that was...bad. First the good news--Seafoam Islands' new Pokémon is already evolved, and not evolved from a Pokémon I already had. Now completely out of user-based names, I name the new level 28 Dewgong "Nuzlocke". Now, for our boss battle. I lead with Sour Suor, who easily withstands a Peck and deals out a Thunderbolt. Round 2...WHAT DO YOU MEAN ICE BEAM IS SUPER EFFECTIVE? Luckily, it's not enough to kill the mighty Suor, and the return Thunderbolt paralyzes Articuno. With the boss paralyzed and Suor low on HP, I switch to Poka.

He can't do a thing. Ice Beam is super effective. Good god Generation I is so screwed up. I send Cody out to mimic Ice Beam, figuring that the "Ice is super effective against Flying regardless" will extend to Articuno itself. It does, but it's not very strong anyway. A Peck and an Ice Beam and Cody's down for the count. I send Suor back out, use a Hyper Potion, get hit with an Ice Beam, use another Hyper Potion, and finally Articuno's paralyzed for a turn. Thunderbolt, hit by Peck, another Thunderbolt, and Articuno's down. But I've got two fatally wounded comrades and only one Phoenix Down--sorry, "Max Revive".

...It was nice while it lasted, Cody.

Natwaf - Level 33 Magneton - Power Plant
Nuzlocke - Level 28 Dewgong - Seafoam Islands

Restless Soul:
Tsunami - Level 17 Pikachu - Pallet Town

Damnit, Suor didn't even get a level-up for that. This was a huge mistake. I guess I'm just lucky that the only one that's in a mandatory area is Moltres, who ought to be the easiest of the three. But having to pick up a new member now is...annoying, to say the least.

...Wait, do I even need Strength at the moment? Maybe I should just bring Hobo back to the party.

(And yes, I know I'm just making sh** up as I go along. This wouldn't be the first time I've broken self-imposed limitations because the story demanded it. Read this, and you'll understand:

Personally, I find it one of my favorite creations, because it essentially took on a life of its own, taking my original plans and deciding that they weren't good enough.)

Huh. So in Yellow Version, you actually have to take the quiz and intentionally get it wrong in order to face the trainer? Well, that's annoying. I didn't even know about the quiz machines on my original playthrough in Red Version--it just wasn't necessary. All that was necessary was to smash your way through. This is more or less what Crazy does, smashing through most of the trainers without taking any damage except when a Vulpix or Ninetales led with Quick Attack. The only one that survived one Surf, barely, was a level 41 Rapidash, but luckily it only used Growl on its one chance.

Interestingly enough, on one of the questions, the "wrong" answer is sort of correct in later generations. Although no Pokémon actually evolves three times, Poliwag does gain a third evolved form in Gold and Silver. I really should save before taking each quiz, though; many of these problems are so vaguely worded that I'm afraid I'll accidentally get it right by mistake.

...Of course, the only question I receive after deciding to do this is "TM 28 contains TOMBSTONER?" We're now five generations in, and that still isn't the name of a real move. I'm a tad disappointed that I've reached Blaine so quickly, though--his Pokémon are at far higher levels than the other trainers in this gym.

...Why am I having Crazy do this battle? Its HP is so low. Suor or Poka would be a much better choice. Crazy will work fine against Ninetales, who both lacks Fire Blast and has only Quick Attack for a non-fire-type damaging move, but against Rapidash and Arcanine...

Well, Crazy somehow ended up being faster than Ninetales despite an eight-level deficit, and critted for an OHKO. Suor vs. Rapidash now...

Fire Spin. Not very powerful, but annoying. A Pokémon with a continuous move like that and a Speed advantage can potentially score a flawless victory over any opponent eventually. Luckily, the second attempt misses, and Surf lands strong. After another round of Fire Spin, Rapidash Stomps, and it's a crit, but doesn't cause flinching. Suor takes it out. Time for Poka vs. Arcanine.

...damn, I thought Arcanine were supposed to be fast! Even with a 13-level advantage, Arcanine can't get the jump on Poka. Poka gets hit with a critical Flamethrower after resurfacing, and it looks like it's possible that another Dig would kill Arcanine, but probably won't. Poka goes underground again, and Arcanine uses Take Down...damn, if it used that again when Poka resurfaces, it could be a double-knockout.

Crit hit. No need to worry. Red wins this battle 3-0.

Team:
Crazy - Level 40 Starmie - Route 20
Poka - Level 42 Charizard - Route 24
Biribiri - Level 38 Venusaur - Cerulean City

Pick up a Leaf Stone for Catastroph and use a Moon Stone on Insane, because I want to be able to train the entire party and as slow and annoying as it is, the Exp. All will make that marginally easier. Yes, that's right; even with missing out on three routes, getting members of the Bellsprout family on three separate occasions, and getting members of the Magnemite family twice, I've actually gotten 50 Pokémon in a Nuzlocke with a few regions still left to explore. Only problem is, there aren't really any regions that can be counted on to consistently provide high-level wild Pokémon for my team to beat up on, so the going will be really slow. I actually did encounter a level 40 Tentacool on Route 20 at one point...I head to Seafoam Islands. Maybe there, we'll get some good experience.

...Okay we are never going there again. Apparently, Krabby learns Guillotine at the low low level of 25. Since Generation I lacks the "one-hit KO moves automatically miss if used against a higher-leveled foe" clause, a level 27 Krabby takes out Chichiri. Sigh...maybe I should just power-level Crazy. I also need a new jack-of-all-trades, and I think I know just who to use. I send Insane to the Daycare and withdraw Hobo for my sixth slot.
