No way in hell do we have iTunes if piracy hadn't happened... or if at least, no way do we have it priced the way it is now, with the number of subscribers it has now. The RIAA has consistently fought very hard to keep the market where they have full control over it so that you pay outlandishly high prices for CDs and something like 5% of it goes to the artist if you're lucky.

we might be better off if we didn't have itunes tbh, the digital market was going to happen one way or the other, artists have other options now, you don't have to sell your music through an RIAA label or apple, itunes is prolonging the life of those companies and that kind of makes me sad.

I don't follow your logic. You'd think things like downloadable and streaming videos would come faster if anything, since business would be less hesitant to put their media on the internet.

No, new medias are only explored out of necessity. Multiple people in here have already said that they pirate due to convenience. They brought out Netflix not because it was something that they thought was guaranteed to make money - they had all kinds of trouble getting it off the ground, especially the streaming - it was a rapid response to people pirating to try and give them that same "convenience," just that they're paying for what they're streaming.

Which is really the way to put a dent in pirating. It ain't draconian bullcrap like the RIAA is hellbent on. Just make your product more convenient to access than pirating, and price it low enough that people would rather just pay the tiny fee than bother with pirating. Steam has it right
