I remember being bored out of my mind by it when I was young, but I started watching it on Netflix last night after some heavy drinking. That movie is freakin' crazy. The depiction of his own Heaven and how he controls it, and how God does exist. I can't imagine them making this movie today.
Nothing in it made me cry or anything, but now thinking about how his dead dog comes back to him, that kind of thing gets me every time.
According to the description (I didn't get that far), he eventually sacrifices himself to Hell to save his wife. I gotta see what that looks like. The movie did win the Academy Award for visual effects. You should check it out, if only to see what their trippy Heaven world they made looks like.
It's based on the book by Richard Matheson, one of my favorite authors. He does a lot of sci-fi stuff, and I loved what they did with the movie.
Matheson stated in an interview, "I think What Dreams May Come is the most important (read effective) book I've written. It has caused a number of readers to lose their fear of death the finest tribute any writer could receive."
That, particularly, is why I really love the story.
