True statement. I never beat the game as a kid because of that zone. Had to wait a decade until buying Sonic Mega Collection as a late teenager to beat it.

Part of the difficulty is thinking that you have to hit Robotnik, I think. Once you realize you don't have to, it just becomes an awful boss battle instead of "worst thing ever."

It's pretty awful.

Labyrinth Zone is well underrated.
Very enjoyable, good degree of difficulty, fun change of pace, great atmosphere, good music, and a fun boss - different than the rest.

Makings for a solid level.

music is pleasant at least

I only ever got to the boss once, but I had no trouble beating him when I did. Other than that the scene is ridiculously tense, with the water chasing you.

The level itself, however...*shiver*. I do not like water levels, especially in Sonic. OMG IT'S THE DROWNING MUSIC, NO GETABUBBLEGETABUBBLEGETABUBBLE!!!
