For the same price a regular laptop or netbook is so much better. Is having a touchscreen really all that important?

The commercial said netbooks are dumb and tablets are cool

Tablets are much nicer to write on than individual sheets of loose leaf. When you're done, you can just tear them off. I use a tablet with my tutoring students all the time.

Why anyone would buy an electronic tablet, though, I'm not really sure, unless they just want to be the early adopters. Yeah, eventually tablets will be quite nice, but right now they're just overpriced, oversized iPhones.

well, depends. i've got my HP Touchpad because it was a firesale. i can also understand getting a Transformer Prime because that line's entire premise IS that your tablet can double as a laptop. it's also packing a quad-core (well, quin-core) which is pretty insane for the price you're getting. this one's actually fairly competitive and overall the extra portability does it well.

most others though yeah, not much purpose to 'em. some cheaper ones sure. but portability's the main selling point. they're the niche between phones and laptops (or netbooks if you wanna go that route) right now. eventually phones will take over 'em again, ditto for laptops.

I'm planning on getting a tablet once my interior designing takes off. Having quick access to tons of images, and web access right in front of customers is a huge plus. Yes I could take out a laptop and show them the same thing, but a tablet is much more efficient.

I never thought about that. It does work really well for showing other people things and presentation in general. But they are advertised so much as personal "do everything you could ever want" devices which is weird consider how hard (or impossible) it is to do many basic things that you would expect of a computer.

Would you like to name some of them?

For my current needs, I would never pay the full price for one.

However, if I were doing some sort of design thing I might think about it. Very certain fields (mostly "art" related) it could be more convenient.

Also, I know that Yale Med School included ipads for everybody as part of the tuition, and have completely done away with paper handouts. Of course, you could theoretically do all the same stuff on a laptop too, but that may be a trend in education going forwards.
