Last Time: Doom triumphs. Doom ALWAYS triumphs!

Spoilers for Marvel Comics and One Piece in this topic!

Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard is a pirate and antagonist in the manga series One Piece. Blackbeard boasts freakish endurance, massive strength, and an odd habit of talking way too much while in combat, which usually leads to him taking far too many hits. Blackbeard's signature abilities though come from his use of devil fruits that he has acquired. The first, the Yami Yami no Mi fruit, gives him power over gravity. This allows him to suck in people and attacks towards him as well as dish out special attacks back to those who are fighting him. The scariest thing that this does, however, is when Blackbeard is able to touch his opponent. He is able to negate any special power a person has on touch, including defensive abilities, and force them to rely on their own endurance to withstand his massive strength. He also has obtained the Gura Gura no Mi, which gives him the power to create Quakes, even going so far as shattering the air. He can also create a bubble around his hand to deliver punishing "quake punches" to people, a power of an earthquake on top of his normal massive strength.

VERSUS.

Gladiator is a character in Marvel Comics and is a member of the Imperial Guard. His powers vary greatly depending on how confident he is in battle. At the height of his powers he is capable of shattering a planet, going many times the speed of light, and capable of withstanding a blow that is comparable to a supernova. He also has heat vision, amazing reflexes, and even has a form of frost breath granted to him by his alien physiology. As he loses confidence he becomes much more vulnerable to attack and his own attacks lose their strength.

Neutral terrain, write-ups are summations.

so this gladiator guy is more powerful the more confident he is?

Would he be really confident for this fight?

also Blackbeards fruit is logia right so would any of Gladiators attack minus heat vision even work?

He may be Logia, but he is usually stupid enough to let someone hit him before he demonstrates his darkness, and unlike normal Logia, he can be hurt if hit without activating his darkness

Correction: Unlike other Logia he can't phase through attacks. They actually might hit him harder since they attack him 'faster' than they would a normal person.

gladiator's definitely the stronger character in all regards, but blackbeard's cancelation thing could be problematic.

at a base level gladiator's pretty damn beasty - talking better than base hulk's level for strength. pre-green scar anyway. gravity tricks have worked on gladiator and his race in the past (Nova Corps uses gravity manipulation for an overwhelming amount of their actions) but i'm not sure blackbeard can deliver the necessary output for it. doubting it, but one piece can weird enough to need confirmation on the best he's done.

<<; but that 'touch me and get cancelled out' needs more explanation.

I thought it was BB DF basically nullifys any and all devil fruit powers

now if this will work on Gladiator dunno (Gladiator doesn't have a DF but would BB power basically go "lol no powers / hax for you" anyway?)

Well, at first glance you have to think about the beginning.

We're talking a guy that will probably just start laughing "Zehahahaha" vs a guy that just needs confidence to be that great.

If Gladiator can one-hit BB, or be able to dodge the darkness once it comes, he has it won.

That's true.

But if Blackbeard shows off his gravity stuff, would that cause Gladiator to lose confidence?

does it count if you touch him? a punch in the face kinda deal.
the other weird part for gladiator is that he isn't human, but part of an alien race. i'm not sure what their 'base' is but a lot of them died. when gladiator can go, he can go harder than damn near anyone, but that's not the norm for his race at all. i mentioned that the nova corps could hold them back and i wasn't meaning just Nova Prime (Rider, the guy most know as "nova"), but a rookie member of Nova who while admittably good at dealing with gravity manip was still able to hold back gladiator's sister for a couple minutes by pinning her down. she's weaker yeah, but even the rookie's shields shouldn't come close to Nova's (though they were definitely better than pretty much everyone else.. whatever that means).

this setting probably doesn't help him out either - confidence falls under a large umbrella, not narrow. main example of this comes from his rise to power initially; though he was one of many soldiers, many died because they weren't too sure of the mission. confidence in mission down -> counts enough to weaken them a lot. this kind of competition won't get the most out of him regardless, but it'll still get a decent amount, if he can go.

but controlling gravity alone don't mean squat without an idea of how good a control you're talking. it's far from unusual to him. hell, i think his flight involves it.

For this, I provide a video

You may or may not watch it, but to say it, as long as he doesn't have your fist flying at his darkness, or uses his new Quake fruit. You can easily PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE, though Luffy punched him in the stomach there.

EDIT: and what I mean by showing this, is the idea that Luffy got a fist in, and still had his powers before BB activated it

I don't think gravity tricks are going to work against a man who can fly through stars.

Well, I can't say I'm familiar with the incident, but I wouldn't put it past the Nova Corps having the technology. Either way, we know he is extremely resilient to higher gravity due to his ease of interstellar flight, his ability to fly around stars without issue-- and his extreme strength.

Not like one piddly shot will wreck Gladiator's confidence, either. He's...well. Way up his own ass. Here's him and Surfer fighting Tyrant (the same dude who whupped up on Galactus). Surfer and Gladiator get caught in the same blast. Surfer goes down. Gladiator goes down too, but remains full of himself and gets back up

nova corps manipulate gravity like nobody's business. but we're talking cosmic-level manipulation.

rider's brother massively increased gravity around his sister to keep her pinned. she's weaker than gladiator, but that guy is way the hell weaker than nova too. confidence ain't something she lacked either, or a mission. what the bro did impressed rider (Nova) quite a bit, but he was entirely a rookie still. re-read to see if i could find any numbers. didn't. scans though:

external image
external image
external image

(eventually he was forced to let it go after he started bleeding from the nose to try to keep it on her.)

did find something potentially useful though, and interesting.
external image
external image

(he was also kicking her ass before this point and she got her shot in only because of the distraction. he's entirely better than her.)

figure, psionics counts as a power if it could be canceled out like that. so yeah, just being 'raw biology' isn't quite unbeatable if pegged. that said nova with a full gravimetric fist is enough to knock out 90% of marvel too, so not a fair comparison. >_>;

but you need a lot more than just 'he uses gravity so it should work!' as again, you need feats to back this up. nova corps use gravity for pretty much everything they do. nova prime isn't a fair comparison to anyone for that as he does warp gates with 'em even.

Sounds like Gladiator takes this pretty easily, really. He's a planet buster that only gets better as his ego inflates, and we know he *and* his ego are tough enough that a shot from Tyrant couldn't stop him (guy who is roughly Galactus level). Out of Blackbeard's zipcode

yeah, despite all that it's still probably in his favor. taking a hit from gladiator probably isn't impossible for blackbeard though i think. could be wrong, but a quick wiki check suggests he's the strongest guy in the series right now. has to count for something with that universe.

Gladiator

I'm not even sure Blackbeard could negate his powers since they're not Devil Fruit based. His power negation doesn't actually revert people to basic human durability (if I know One Piece there are people who have abnormal strength/toughness despite not having a fruit that provides it, right?), does it?

Human durability isn't entirely necessary, as shown by nova when he clocked the female. And gladiator isn't always tyrant level, the guy's lost to Thor fairly and guys like the thing when losing confidence, so he has quite a range. Kinda doubt he'd kill blackbeard straight, which is why the power matters.

My point is that unless Blackbeard can suppress *everything* that isn't baseline for your species, it won't even matter - if his power can only negate Devil Fruit abilities, then Gladiator won't get his powers reduced at all, and average Gladiator probably hits hard enough that he won't be losing confidence from seeing that his opponent just got rocked by his first punch (I don't think there's any doubt that without low confidence he has a major physical advantage here). Basically, the power negation thing is really the only hope Blackbeard has.

Right, power negation is the whole thing. Nova DID THAT to gladiator's sister when he headbutted her and temporarily nerfed her down, hard. The scans and explanation were already posted. It isn't normal for their race to be that high a level, those two are the only ones left. They got wiped out. Still superhuman yeah, but the base of the race in general can be beat by a lot, similar to asgardians really.

Would assume it depends on how you see his power work, specifically if he can work on more than just devil fruit and just cancel any supernatural power. Their biology is good, but not amazing. Again, think asgardians. Their main power of being able to beef themselves up, bit different, that's a superpower which can be disabled as proven by nova. If it does work on all supernatural powers then I don't see how it wouldn't be able to work here like that. Whether he'd actually be able to pull it off, whole other question.
