If I hear they somehow made post-production 3D look good, I'll go see it. If nothing else, Phantom Menace is a visual spectacle to this day and it could be pretty good if it had working 3D.

Besides, edits might improve it.

3D is one of the best things to happen to cinema ever, so I don't see why I shouldn't support it.

I won't if the 3D conversion is bad though. But since they've been working on this for a while I assume they dug up the old files and rendered the effects again in stereoscopic, which should at least ensure that the CGI stuff looks good... meaning 90% of the movie.

Man, the whining about Lucas changing things never ceases to amaze me. It's the most minor, inconsequential things most of the time, and people get personally offended (I remember the last time this topic came up, people were wishing he had died young, which is just plain disgusting). Does it really matter if Greedo shoots first or Anakin has a different face or there's a few seconds of CGI additions in there? Does it make the films worse in any significant way? Does it make the acting, characters, and story any worse?

Of course not.

You should all be ashamed for getting so upset over such trivial crap. And while we're at it about changes to the original trilogy, how about that amazing remastering job they did on the blu ray version? Oh wait, we're all too hung up about Darth Vader saying no at the wrong moment to care about that.

Also The Phantom Edit is actually really good and I definitely recommend checking that out.

Actually it really does matter if Han shoots first. Using DnD alignment terms, a "Good" character wouldn't shoot first, they'd return fire in self defense. Considering the Han/Greedo scene is still before we even get to the Millennium Falcon, we don't know much about Han at this point. Having him shoot first shows him to be a Chaotic Neutral character, rather than a Chaotic Good or maybe even Neutral Good character. Therefore having him return at the end of the movie to help blow up the Death Star shows character development as opposed to it being what we would have expected of him anyway. It does seem nitpicky, but it's much more in character for Han to shoot first.

Anakin being at the end is arguable because of Obi-Wan being at the end. Being in favor of Christensen being there is a minority, likely due to nostalgia and a general disliking of the prequels, but in a way it makes sense if you think that the force ghost people appear in the way that they would see themselves. Perhaps Anakin sees himself as he was before he became Darth Vader, so it makes sense for him to appear younger. It also doesn't make a whole lot of sense, because Luke doesn't know what his dad looked like when he was younger. I guess you could argue that he could sense that it was him through the force, but it's all speculation and the original makes more sense overall.

The other changes being made are largely nitpicky, but the ones that do have an impact just make it really goofy and largely worse. There's no reason for Obi-Wan to make a silly noise to scare away the Jawas, or for Vader to yell NOOOOOOO at the end of RotJ or for some Gungan to say anything ever in the original trilogy.

When you stop to think about it, the original ending makes no sense, since the Anakin that appears in the original versions never really existed at all. There was never a 'Normal old man' version of Anakin, only young Anakin, and then Vader

There's not a "normal old man" Anakin, but if you think of Darth Vader as having redeemed himself after he killed Palpatine, Luke at least saw his face. Like I said it's a bit nitpicky either way, and it's arguable which makes more sense, but I feel that the original leads the viewer to ask less questions.

Does it really matter if Greedo shoots first ... Does it make the acting, characters, and story any worse?

As has been stated this one actually does affect the quality of the character. Having Han wait and shoot second instead of shooting before Greedo even has a chance to fire is a big difference in characterisation. And what we know of Han makes it pretty clear that he would shoot first, changing it because "the good guy shouldn't shoot first" is just stupid.

By the way, Han now shoots simultaneously with Greedo, thus restoring any changed characterisation... kinda.

Edit: I actually am in favour of Han shooting first for reasons stated by MarvelousGerbil, but it's so minor it makes no difference to the overall quality of the film to me. It does help establish Han's character a bit, but there are many, many other scenes that do just that. It's a largely superficial change.

Except not really. It is just a cop-out cause they don't want Han to be the instigator. Even though that makes perfect sense for his character. Also this all makes Greedo look worse since he is now a bad shot.

Lightning Strikes - The Hayden Christiansen addition to RotJ is awful, and not because of nostalgia. It's awful because of its implications.

This is a spoiler warning for a movie that everyone has already seen

The entire point -- literally the entire point -- of Luke surrendering to the Imperials is to be taken to Vader to convince him that he's still Anakin Skywalker. That is literally 100% of the point of Luke's actions there. Other than the opening in which he rescues Han, every single thing Luke does in this movie is about proving Vader is Anakin. When Obi-Wan claims that Vader and Anakin are two different people, he's wrong. Every single thing Luke does after Jabba's death is about showing that. When Luke tells Vader that he's still Anakin and Vader refuses to accept it, that's about trying to prove it. Replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christansen does exactly the opposite. It implies that Hayden Christiansen is the "real" Anakin and that Sebastian Shaw was just Vader, when the whole point of Luke's actions was to prove Sebastian Shaw was Anakin all along and had just refused to accept it.

Now, I'll grant you that the the "No" added to Vader during the climax doesn't actually change anything, but it's still a stupid, needless addition to a scene that was about emotion and action and not dialogue. And then you have the additions that actually do change things, like having R2 hide behind more rocks during the sand people scene where there's no way he could have gotten behind the rocks, and then the rocks magically disappear when he has to leave the cave he was hiding in.
