Yeah, Icelandic surnames are basically name-daughter and name-son. Their phonebook is awful. No joke.

Iceland has a law that in order to be a citizen you have to change your given name to one of the 5000 approved first names, and your surname into (father's first name + son) if you're a man or (mother's first name + dottir) if you're a woman.

It's a part of their policy of preserving the language.
