So that's FE4 at #11, FE3 at #16, FE1 at #47, and nothing more recent makes the list? Unexpected.

Fits the rest of the list, which has almost nothing made after 1993.

See also: the only Metroid games on the list are Metroid 1 and Metroid 2.

Why would you complain about the Zelda with the most gameplay depth being #1?

This man knows his main series Mario games.

I was fine with SMB being #1 on the list, however, because of how influential it was in the gaming industry. I was just glad it wasn't the typical "hay guyz letz put a Zelda game at #1 without giving it any thought lolololol"

I also loved Super Mario 64 and Super Mario RPG cracking the top ten.

But overall, the list is definitely a train wreck.

I suppose you like it better with near-unavoidable blue shells, POW blocks (because lightning just wasn't enough!), and dragged items removing the skill from defence.

SMK is great; there's a reason it's close to the top game for the system despite not having a proven series name to fall back on.

Usually when one wants to make an argument one cites things that are bad about the presentation!

It looks fine to me. Actually, the biggest thing I'm taking from that video, which the series as a whole could sorely use, is how fast it is compared to modern Mario Karts. I still enjoy most of them (been playing MK7 a lot over the past two weeks!) but seriously, within 20 seconds of the race's start, player has picked up an item (without waiting a zillion years to see it scroll through WHAT item he or she was going to receive), dodged through the entire set of enemy racers, used a mushroom to take a shortcut, made several power slides, completed a lap, and dodged a fireball attack not by dragging an item, but by seeing and reacting to it!

Whatever you think of the game's presentation it's clear to me that MK could learn a lot just by looking at this game again.

The first two Zelda games are definitely the worst in the series (discounting the original Four Swords, which is basically a tech demo). They're loaded with technical limitations that just stop the game from being fun. And frankly, when you compare the... everything... to the rest of the series, it's a substantially worse experience.

Definitely a rather weird list.

As for the Metroid series, its director (Yoshio Sakamoto) generally has more of a fondness for the original than for Super Metroid from what I've seen, and it seems that usually when Japanese gamers think of that series, they think of the original Metroid before anything else in the series comes to mind.

Japanese gamers' opinion on that series is rather warped compared to what you'd usually hear, though. For instance, Famitsu gave Other M a higher score than it gave to Fusion or any of the Prime games, and I wouldn't be surprised if the case was similar commercially.

It's also kinda weird seeing Metroid II rated as second-highest in the series seeing how it's usually considered to be one of the weaker entries in the franchise (for instance, on unikgamer, it's 3rd last in the series, slightly ahead of Hunters and almost 300 spots behind Other M - and Pinball is so easily last there it isn't even funny).

As far as the Zelda series is concerned, Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Skyward Sword all received perfect scores FYI (when I saw SS ahead of WW, I felt like checking). Also, ironically enough, Famitsu gave Skyrim a perfect score - who says Japanese gamers don't care about Western games?

Speaking of Western games, the following all have near-perfect scores in Famitsu:

Grand Theft Auto IV
Red Dead Redemption
L.A. Noire
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Gears of War 3
FIFA 12

Uh oh, where're the Mass Effects, Uncharteds, and Portals? Instead we get all this casual crap making headway, ugh.

I don't understand the hate the GBA game gets. I found it decent enough; in particular, it's the only SMK I've played that I felt had really good character balance, and it has the best Rainbow Road in the series. What do people dislike about it exactly? Other times when I've asked this question, people just tell me they found it unmemorable; which...is very subjective so I can't really object to it. So...I'm curious--what makes it a "complete wreck"?

MarvelousGerbil posted...

Outdated in what way? The only things newer Zelda games added that I'd want to see added is like...story, and an in-game map system. Actually, all things considered I'm probably just as happy without unskippable cutscenes, so actually nevermind the story >_>

Unplayable? How so? You face directions and stab things with your sword. That's like saying Pac-Man is unplayable.

Seriously, I can understand allegations that, say, Metroid 1 is unplayable; I can see how people would be frustrated by the fact that you can't crouch, can't shoot down, start with 30/700 energy, need to write down ridiculously long passwords, and the fact that the game is ridiculously glitchy. I can see how that kind of stuff would frustrate a modern player. But...I actually can't think of anything that would make Zelda 1 unplayable to a modern gamer. Other than the fact that the challenge level is higher than modern zeldas which only remove 1/16 of a heart when you get hit.

Man why do people always have to say stuff like "oh it's only popular because X". Why can't people just like something because they think it's good? And given Xenoblade's reception (from both critics and fans) I wanna say that a lot of people think it's good. So there you go.

The first thing that comes to mind is not being able to move in eight directions. Even though certain enemy attacks can. That's hilariously frustrating. There are more though, which generally apply to general game design. The puzzles, for instance. Or the terribly written, confusing hints you get from NPCs. And just for the record, the original's challenge was a joke. Some of the most unbalanced difficulty I've ever seen in a game, due to simple poor design. I mean, the game's difficulty spikes up and down wildly, ranging from the hardest Zelda game to the easiest on a whim. Just two dungeons after one of the hardest parts of the entire series (those Wizzrobes) you're so ridiculously overpowered that you can stomp the last boss with no effort whatsoever, not even having to dodge his attacks. And when the game is difficult, it's rarely fair difficulty (see prior points about movement and especially hints). What few puzzles are more than just "move the right block" are incredibly obtuse. I mean, what kind of clue is "GRUMBLE GRUMBLE".

And while Phantom Hourglass is very flawed, it had enough strengths to make it the better game. Weakest non-NES, non-FS game in the series, but to its credit all of the games above it are outright fantastic.

And yet somehow people figured it out. The instruction manual told you that the Food item you buy from stores was something enemies craved. That's your hint.

I'll agree that if I was re-releasing Zelda 1 today I would translate some of the Old Man text better, but that's probably it as far as alterations that need to be made.
