sounds like a gen ed class where once in the semester you'll have a random group activity where you'll turn in a piece of paper with all your names on it
better be there that day

If attendance isn't taken, and there's that many people, the only way they could possibly know is if they do pop quizzes. My physics lectures did that -- they told everybody to get a mini-scantron on the way in for one class each week.
I hate stuff like this. I'll be the most active in the class, Be the only one who understands the class material, and still get a less than ideal grade.
The class participation thing never seems to have defined rules/limits. For instance, I homeschooled for high school and still had class participation as part of my grade at least once. No clue what my grade on it was though. >_>
Participation in general is just a big hoop you have to jump through to make the teacher happy. In my experience, half of the time the teacher asks a question about something that's on the powerpoint behind them and then gobbles it up when the biggest suck up in the class raises their hand and answers. Class size really doesn't matter for how dumb it is. If I don't want to talk and get 95% on other assignments I don't really deserve a B.
From: Gwindor | #006 I find attendance is only taken by the poor teachers.
Pretty much this. Or it's a bad course they're forced into and have nothing really prepared.
If going to class isn't helping you on homework/exams that just says the teaching is bad. Putting points on lectures to force people to attend is missing the point.

No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.
I hate when teachers use class participation. I have had lots that use attendance but not that, and they just take off points/fail you if you miss too much....that is less bad, but still annoying as hell. ESPECIALLY when it is a teacher that just reads off powerpoints that are posted online. I really don't know how much it ever effects my grade though, teachers never really give out such information.
