Well, plenty of post-apocalyptic things aren't that dark. You just wouldn't recognize them as post-apocalyptic because they aren't dark and/or full of "barbaric carnal heathens."

Well do you see what happens when there's just a hurricane or rioting or something? Mass looting happens because law no longer applies. Humanity created cities and laws the way we need in the mutual interest of safety and order for people. While we may not agree with all of the laws, we agree to abide by them and sacrifice some freedoms because they are, by large, in the best interest of our personal safety.

FFX and the post apocalyptic parts of FFVI are very dark, though, especially FFVI(FFX has dark themes but has a mostly sunny aesthetic presentation that counters that)

Whatever caused the disaster ends up creating such a force that whatever dust and debris it creates obscures the sun, I guess.

This is more along the lines of what I was thinking. My supposition was that this collapse of this scurity and stucture influenced humans to give into their carnal natures or something.

Adventure Time (yes I see I've been beaten to it) is post-apocalyptic and it's not dark at all. At least on the surface that is.

well, generally, when you set out to make something take place after an apocalyptic event, it is to explore what would take place following that....and not many people think of how great it would be, except, you know, crazy people.

i mean, there is no reason to make something take place in a post apocalyptic world if not to showcase darkness.

Carnal natures, ha, now I usually see that more in pre-apocalyptic stories actually.

Although I guess it'd be cool for a game to feature people recovering from an apocalypse by working together, etc.

The real answer is probably that, in a post-apocalyptic world, you still need to have conflict. And when all you have is random people with little power, they have to be pretty nasty for there to be a compelling conflict there.
