The Cloud hate on this site is ridiculous. If Link is gone he's the only one who has a chance against Mario. If Link and Mario are gone, then there are three potential winners. Cloud, Snake or Samus.

Personally I think these contests are getting to old and the site's taste gets worse every year.

I couldn't agree more. Mario would probably beat Cloud nowadays, it's stupid to want Cloud gone.

***POTENTIALLY CONVOLUTED IRRELEVANT PLAN WARNING***

I feel like we should have been relegating all winners to a Gauntlet of Champions from the start.

Link wins CB1 in a completely open and unknown field.

Cloud wins CB2 in a Link-less field and then goes on to beat Link in the Final Battle to become the new Ultimate Champion.

Sephiroth wins CB3, then in the Gauntlet of Champions loses to Link, and then Link beats Cloud to regain Ultimate Champion status.

Mario wins CB4, then in the Gauntlet of Champions loses to Seph, who then loses to Cloud, who then loses to Link.

Samus wins CB5, then the Gauntlet of Champions proceeds in the same orderly fashion (Link>Cloud>Seph>Mario>Samus)

Solid Snake would then win CB6 in 1-on-1s without those 5, but I can't foresee how the Gauntlet would go down (Link would win though).

Crono would then win CB7, and then again we have potentially more shakeups in the Champions Gauntlet order (Link would win though).

Who wins CB8 then? Mega Man? Charizard? Sonic? Anyway, whoever wins at that point goes into a Tournament of Champions (not a Gauntlet) with the other 7 Champions, to cut down on repetitive post-contest Gauntlet Polls. Link still wins but oh well.

And then for CB9 we could do a bracket without those 8 Champions, then the winner goes onto another Tournament of Champions featuring everyone EXCEPT Link, then the winner faces Link in the Final Battle.

And then from that point forward we could keep up that format:
Normal Bracket with all ex-Champs removed
Winner moves onto Tournament of Champions featuring the 8 Champs that have never won the Tournament of Champions
Winner of that faces ex-Tournament of Champions winners in a Gauntlet to crown the Ultimate Champion.
